“A Mediocre Hotel at a Lavish Price”
Reviewed 22 December 2008

Overall our experience with the Thon Bristol Bergen was not great.

The hotel is located centrally, although isn't in the "touristy" area by the harbor (3-4 block walk).

We were in Bergen on an unusually hot evening, so our room was quite stifling (no air conditioning, as is often the case in Scandinavia). We had windows which opened up into a courtyard in the middle of the hotel, which was quite possibly the most off-putting part of our stay. The courtyard was dirty and grimy and had garbage stacked up in it, which put off a bad odor and was gross to look at. The heat and the smell together did not go together well. The hotel overall was quite noisy.

Our room itself was pretty clean and the bathroom was fine. The hallways were dirty however and had both clean and dirty linens stacked up in some places.

The complimentary breakfast was fine, although not as nice as some others we experienced on our trip. Front desk staff was adequately nice but did not go out of their way to be helpful.

Overall, this hotel serves its purpose if all you need is a decent place to stay a night and you aren't planning to make it a long-term stay or are expecting something luxurious or romantic. I think that the biggest irritation to me was simply that the hotel was the worst one we stayed in our entire 2 week trip...but we paid far more for it than any of our other much nicer hotels. And definitely request a room that does not look over the courtyard!!!

Ive stayed at this hotel numerous times over the last couple of years, even during its building work to upgrade.
Id just like to comment on the other reveiws ive read here and add couple of my own .
The hotel is an average price for a town centre hotel in Norway (nothing is cheap), its becoming normal not to have mini bars in Norwegian hotels due to peoples shock at the prices after they have cleaned it out !
Breakfasts are usually good selection of ham, chees, rolls and eggs, bacon. also the Egon hotel adjacent to it is a nice restaurant any time of day (theres also another Egon at the harbour but always crowded) The double rooms are usually clean and sufficient for a couple days stay over.
This hotel is slap bang in the middle of town so its perfect for shopping in the day time and partying into the late hours !
It is prone to get noisy but Bergen people party hard especially at weekends. or if the sun makes an appearance ! Ask for a room away from the street if thats going to bother you.
Remember due to high costs of drinking eating out etc, the town doesnt come alive usually until after 10 or 11pm and stays open until 3 -4 am.
hope this helps a little,

  • Liked — conveniance to shopping district, restaurants and bars all walking distance
  • Disliked — nothing its a typical town centre hotel of that rating

Well, so good news first, the hotel is in a great central location, right on the main shopping street in the city, and an easy walk from where the airport bus drops you off. The hotel is having so work done to it's outside, but there was no noise from the construction while we were in the hotel.

Now the bad... I booked via Expedia and I booked a double room, when I turned up check in went without a hitch. I went up to my room, and found that I'd been given a single room (I was with my wife). I went down to reception to get the problem rectified, only to be told by the guy in reception that if you book with Expedia you only ever get a single no matter how much you pay. after 5 minutes of arguing another member of staff waled past and asked what was going on, luck for me she fixed everything up and give me a double room.

The room was fairly noise at night, there were lots of people in the street outside until about 3:30am, and I didn't get much sleep. This happened on the next night as well.

I'll finish on another positive, he breakfast was excellent! Good hot and cold selection.

All in all it wasn't a bad hotel but I was glad to be gone so I could get some sleep.

This hotel is situated right off the main walking plaza, which we thought would be a great location. We were wrong. It was incredibly noisy! Bergen's youth like to PARTY into the wee hours. As another poster noted - close the window and suffocate or leave the window open and forget about sleeping. We arrived by train to find no maps of the city at the station and so called the hotel to ask for directions. We were told to come to the center.... click. Should have mapquested the location in advance; my bad! I went into a Rica hotel to ask directions and the staff there were very helpful even though we were staying elsewhere. The room was decent sized for the price, though it could have been cleaner. The maid clearly only vacuums the main pathways. Treasures from prior guests remained on the floor throughout our stay. The amenties consist of a wall-mounted squeeze bottle of all purpose cleanser. The breakfast was ok, with a big enough selection of bread, meat, cheese etc to make a sandwich for later in the day. There is free internet in the lobby and a free coffee machine too. All in all it was ok, but not great. We would not stay there again because of the noise.

Incredibly noisy if you are in a room facing the street. Too hot to close the windows, and no A/C. Do NOT stay here in the summer; or if you do, do NOT stay in a room facing the street. Hotel staff was not very helpful. Very expensive and we could not sleep for either of our two nights there!

My husband and I travelled to Bergen just before X-mas. We expected Norway to be very expensive, however we were pleasantly surprised by the rates and the quality Hotel Bristol offered. The public areas are very stylish and the rooms are nicely decorated (reception told it they had plans of rennovating the rooms to an even better standard in January!). The hotel's Egon Restaurant (a Norwegian restaurant chain) served quality food in nice surrounding. This is definitely a hotel we will recommend to friends and family as it is also located in the middle of the city centre!

Good staff, good location, (great for walking around the city), restaurants nearby. But like everything in Norway, it was expensive. Our room was a bit stuffy in the evenings with no air conditioning.
