“Central location, pleasant staff, good breakfast...”
Reviewed 25 August 2009

Very welcoming staff, we had a cute room in the eaves of the old part of the building. Breakfast was a good standard. There is free internet access in the lobby and also free tea and coffee in the lounge (unheard of in Norway - something free!). Really lovely stay, five minutes from the Torget fishmarket and across the harbour from the Bryggen. Can recommend the Egon pub (on the corner of the Brygeen) for dinner. We were a bit dubious but the food was really good.

Friendly place with clean rooms, a decent breakfast, and within walking distance of the fish market and everything touristy. I would certainly consider booking there again if returning to Bergen.

Staff team very welcoming and nice. Great position of the hotel but many rooms don't have any nice view of the bay.
Breakfast is very good but room too small and consequentially it is too crowdy.
The hotel oberall need a refreshment of the fornitures.

This is a very friendly, helpful, family-run hotel (which we find preferable to chains), an easy walk to the town center. Our room (432) was well-priced and very spacious, with a considerable seating area. The breakfast offers a large spread. There are 2 computer terminals in the lobby on which you can check internet for free.

We stayed at the Augustin for two weeks for our main summer holiday.
First impressions were not great. The young man on reception simply handed over our key with no welcome or information about the hotel. The room we had been given was really small with nowhere to put clothes except a small rack with two clothes-hangers. The shower had a tiny screen and no tray; there was a hole for the water to go down but it still ended up flooding round the wash basin and toilet. Like in the room itself there was hardly any space to put stuff. When we complained the guy on reception said "well you've got a table". He said they would put a cupboard in the next day - but where would they put it? There was hardly any floor space!

The next day we told our holiday rep and she spoke to reception. We were moved to a much better room on the top floor. It was a decent size and had a bath and shower. There was just a little wardrobe for clothes but it was better than nothing. The furniture was a bit old and chipped and there were grubby marks on the walls but it was comfortable and it had a good view, unlike the first room which had a view of the wall of the building next door.

We stayed half board and had dinner in the dining area of the wine bar - which is in the cellar and very atmospheric! The food was excellent - really fresh tasty ingredients, very good choice at breakfast. We ate at the Neptun one Sunday (the Augustin don't serve on a Sunday) and it was good but nothing like the Augustin! Unfortunately the first Sunday we had to go out and find a restaurant as the lady on reception did not know to send us to the Neptun, even though we had meal vouchers for both Sundays. However they did make up for it by giving us lunch in the brasserie on our last day.

The only let-downs were some of the reception staff and some of the rooms. If you are only staying a night or two (and a lot of guests here are) then you could put up with a poky little room but, if you are staying any longer, make sure they give you a decent room - you're paying for it after all.

In general a very good hotel. From what we heard it seems to compare well with other hotels in Bergen too.

Just be advised that what in the description is stated as 2 twin beds, are in reality 2 single beds. Travellers on a bigger side would find them too small. Breakfast is amazing! It's a full buffet style breakfast with plenty of fresh breads, cold cuts, etc., etc. and real freshly brewed coffee. There is also free tea and coffee available in a lounge area any time of the day.

Stayed at Augustin Hotel, Bergen with husband and 16 year old son. In fact it was my son's idea to visit Norway! We had a triple room, which was more than adequate, size-wise. I believe hotel is still family owned (not a chain)
Very friendly staff and there is amore than adequate breakfast
Only a short walk to restaurants and tourist information centre. Recommend booking ahead for any fjord cruise. This can be booked at tourist info centre. We booked a half day cruise. Very nice.
Eating out is quite expensive. We ate at a very nice American themed diner one night. A typical burger, chips and salad and drink was about £60 (for the three of us) but we expected this before going. A harbour side drink stop which consisted of half pint of lager, coke and "complementary" bowl of nuts was about £15. Ensure you have a good breakfast at the hotel!
Things to do; Fjord cruise, funicular ride - the views are amazing, aquarium, walking in the Norwegian woods, visit the market (for the sight of the fish stall alone! and where else can you buy wolf skins???) It is also worth a ride on the tourist train, as you get to see bits of Bergen you wouldn't otherwise see.
