My rating would be a 3.5 but I will give a 4 just because we all became rather fond of this elderly and kind of quirky downtown hotel looking out onto the Tourist Center and the harbor. The rooms have names, for example. The elevator is old and tiny and a wee bit wheezy. Lots of pretty woodwork. It reminded me of the old downtown hotels in the American Midwest - and I am saying that in a positive way.

We had a large third floor room to accommodate four of us so there was plenty of room and the bathroom was sizable. All very clean. I don't know if it had been renovated or not. Wifi worked pretty well. One bed was on a pullout couch and it left me a little stiff the next morning. Not much view since our room looked out almost directly into the ugly Tourist Center blocking the view of the harbor. I think the floor of the room was wooden, which we liked, too.

The main problem our first night was that we had to leave the windows open because of the room's stuffiness and the result was a lot of noise that kept my daughter up nearly all night. The next night we closed the windows and that helped a lot, though it was a little too warm.
Excellent, large breakfast that helped offset the high cost (in US dollars) of the room; no problems with shortages and the wait staff was working very hard throughout the keep up. A very pleasant breakfast room facing out on to the harbor.

The best aspect of this hotel is the location, within walking distance to all the interesting sights of Bergen, the bus from the airport and restaurants. But a tip - the tourist gouging prices in the fish market for a plate of food to eat on a picnic bench are ridiculous; you can get a full and better meal in the restaurants that costs the same!

Spend some time wandering around Bergen. A wonderful little city, if expensive, like all of Norway.

Room Tip: Ask to face away from the harbor if you are a light sleeper.

Thank you for your review!

We are thrilled to hear that you became rather fond of our hotel. The original part of the hotel was buildt in 1928 so the hotel has a long, rare and really interesting history and background. Lots of things has changed since the start but one main thing is the same; the excellent location.

Thank you for all your nice comments - we really appreciate it!

Hope you all have a great fall.

Best regards,

I stayed here just after having been to their sister hotel Neptun. Location is spot on.! I had a non-renovated room, which was a little bit dark and worn out. Breakfast had some impressive things about it, see my review from Neptun as it was quite similar. However, they too struggled to refill empty selection up to one hour before the end of breakfast hours. In addition, they had less variety than Neptun. Reception staff was friendly. Would probably have a higher rating if the room was renovated, which I do understand is an ongoing process. Having already ordered my next Bergen visit, I'm happy to have chosen Neptun and not Strand, but would consider them again in the future.

Room Tip: Get a renovated room, I looked into one and it seemed a lot better than the old I had.

The location of the hotel is excellent - just across the street from the fish market and the Bryggen, right in the heart of historic (and buzzing with tourists...) Bergen.
Our room was a renovated superior twin (almost impossible to get a double bed in this particular hotel, for some reason) on the 7th floor, facing an inner courtyard.
The room itself was clean and pleasant, the bed a little too soft and not very comfortable if what you really wanted was a double bed. The bathroom was a little too small and could do with a few improvements (better lighting, space for toiletries, a proper bathmat). There is no AC in the rooms, so we had to keep the windows open. This might have been a real problem had the room been facing the front of the hotel.
Breakfast was good and the breakfast room pleasant.
All in all the hotel is fine, the problem is that Bergen hotels in general are very expensive, so you end up feeling you got less than what you should have got for your money.

Room Tip: Insist on a room that has been renovated recently. We got a room on the 3rd floor that had a very un...

Stayed at Scandic Strand Hotel for one night, in a single room. The hotel has a great location in the center of Bergen, just minutes away to "everything". The room was very small, even for a singleroom, with no view except into a officebuilding. Only a bed and a desk, no place to sit and watch tv except in your bed. Check-in was slow, and there were no information about breakfast or offer a free newspaper (included if you are a regular guest). The hotel is all in all very ordinary, almost boring ... (but so are most hotels). Breakfast was decent. Quite expensive.

Great location but the compromise is the noise at night with the restaurants and bars very nearby.
Excellent breakfast and good value for Norway v. other local hotels. Had to have windows open because of no AC, consequently very noisy night, especially Saturday. However, didn't spoil a pleasant stay. Sixth floor room at front had great harbour views, bath with over shower, and complementary coffee and tea all day was a nice bonus..

Thank you for your review!
Scandic Strand probably has the best location of all hotels in Bergen, right across the fish market and within walking distance to all major sights and attractions. Due to the central location you may experience some noise from the city, but asking for rooms facing the backyard will solve the problem. But then again you dont´t get the ocean view..:)

We are happy to hear you enjoyed the breakfast, the complementary coffe and tea and that we all in all are good value for money!

If you ever choose to visit Bergen again, we hope to see you back at Scandic Strand!

We were very happy with the location of this hotel, right on the water and just where the bus from the airport drops you off - our room was cosy, but ok in size for 2 people with 2 big bags.

The bathroom was really spacious though and shower was good.

Downside was it was too hot in the room at night and as our room faced the water, we couldn't open the windows as the bars outside were too noisy so it was stifling in there - they did bring us a fan but it didn't do much good.

Breakfast was really good though and liked the free tea and coffee all day long.

We are glad to hear you were happy with the location of our hotel. I can absolutely understand that you think it was hot, and that you missed air condition. Most of the hotels in Bergen do not have air condition. It is very rare that the temerature in Bergen is so high that we need it..:)

If you choose to visit us again I recommend asking for one of our rooms faced towards the courtyard. It is more quiet so you can open the windows without worring about noise from the street.

Hope to see you back one day!

Scandic Strand

The hotel is in a great location and our room on the 6th floor was good with a fantastic view. Very noisy though with the bars outside (especially our first night when there were loads of cheering from one of them, probably a football match!). Could really do with air con though, room is very hot and all the mattress protectors, although comfy, make sleeping even hotter. Decent bathroom and room slept all 4 of us comftably. Breakfast was plentyful with a great selection. Would def recommend a trip up the funicular and if you have kids get the free map from the kiosk for a treasure hunt whilst up there.

We are sorry to hear that you experienced noise. If you decide to visit us again, we recommend asking for one of our rooms faced towards the courtyard when booking, which may be quieter.

We are glad you thought our rooms were good and that you enjoyd the breakfast.
