“Location good, but poor service and shabby room”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

The location of this hotel cannot be beat --- right on the harbor, across from the fish market and the shopping area and a very short walk to the base of the funnicular. But we had one of the worst customer service experiences in 20 years of European travel. I approached the desk, gave my surname, and was told they had no reservation. I pulled out the written itinerary that I had made for myself, gave them the confirmation number that I had copied and pasted onto it from my emailed confirmation, and was told, brusquely, that there was no active confirmation with that number. The desk employee took the itinerary from my hand and loudly accused me, in front of the other people checking in, of having foolishly made the reservation for the night before and missing out on it. (She was pointing to a place on my own itinerary, but was of course pointing to a different reservation for the hotel where we had stayed the night before.) Finally, after our tired family waited for a good long while quite late in the evening, it was discovered that the other desk worker, a very new employee, had mistakenly given our reserved room to someone else. We had booked a larger family room, and there was not space for all of us, so they ended up giving us two rooms, plus a sheepish but not particularly sincere apology --- and, until I made clear that I thought it was grossly unfair to do so, they were actually completely prepared to charge us full price for the extra room. As it was, the rooms were only OK. Room 706, the family room, requires your child to literally sleep in a dark, windowless closet. It is fairly shabby, with weak wifi and a lot of noise out the window. Room 709, a double room, was quite nice, with a lovely balcony overlooking the harbor. Neither was luxurious. I would find somewhere else to stay. Location is the one and only upside of this hotel and there are dozens of others in the immediate vicinity.

Stayed at this hotel in May for 3 nights. It is a good location right opposite the fish market. The staff were not friendly, in fact, when we checked in the girl on duty spoke once no greeting at all despite saying hello to her! She told us time of breakfast but not where it was. Not easy to find if you are not told and the lift to take you there was out of order! The maid service was basic to say the least, in the 3 days we stayed. we received new towels but the room was never actually cleaned, in fact, on our last day the maid dumped our towels on our unmade beds and also left us a roll of plastic bin liners on the bed as well. The breakfast was ok. Also no tea/coffee making facilities in room. For the room rate the hotel needs to lift its game!

Thank you for your review!

We are so sorry to hear that you were not happy with your stay. The staff is trained to be serviceminded, but obviously we have a job to do, and your comments have been forwarded to the manger.

All room should be cleaned every day, including the stayrooms. There is no excuse for leaving towels and a roll of plastic bin liners on your bed - please accept our apology!

Thank you for posting your review - this is the only way we can improve ourselves.

Bad choice. The room was extremely small, and so was the bed. Everything is quite worn out. The room was noisy. The light switch was really old and almost pops out when used (which makes me doubt the hotel has good security standards). The toilet had some tiles broken, and so was the tap, but that is not the worst part: the shower is basically over the sink! No wifi whatsoever. Breakfast is decent. Upon arrival the receptionist did not bother to smile. The location is great, but that's not really something the current management can be proud of. Next time I am definitely looking for something else in the neighborhood (there are plenty of other hotels at a walking distance).

Room Tip: Don't allow them to give you a room which faces the palace behind. The view is terrible, the roo...

The Scandic Strand is quite out-dated and needs a bit of work, but the rooms are clean and the view is amazing. Our room looked out over the harbor and fish market. The hotel is directly across the harbor from the Bryggen, very close to restaurants. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was typical of European breakfast included hotels. It is conveniently located within walking distance to all of the main attractions. There is a bar in the same building, but beware that it is not connected to the hotel and you cannot charge your purchases to your room. We stayed in 3 Scandic hotels on this trip and they were all nice, average hotels. Always clean, comfortable and quiet. The Norway in a Nutshell tour is a must-see while visiting Bergen!

What can I say? Other than an extremely close location to the Norway in a Nutshell boat dock and decent coffee at breakfast, there was nothing else to recommend this hotel. Very very pricey for what you get even by Norwegian standards. The Superior extra rooms were very small and that is the top category for Scandic. We had two rooms. In 714, the windows did not open and there was very little air circulation. The refrigerator was not functioning and had a puddle of water around it. In room 715, the windows opened a tad. Below was an extremely noisy courtyard with people shouting until 0300. Very hot and stuffy even with the window open. Wifi was not available at all in the room. You could only access wifi in certain parts of the breakfast room and bar. I just think it is dishonest to advertise room wifi and not provide it at all. The rooms were supposedly renovated but the beds were very poor and the furniture looked knocked around. For such an expensive price, I expected more. I have stayed at Scandic in Finland and it was far superior to this. This doesn't make the brand look good. I suggest you stay somewhere cheaper and I am willing to bet the amenities are the same.

Had a great trip. Loved our room but didn't like the bathroom because it was so small my knees hit the wall while I was sitting down, the basin was small with no place to put my wash kit, my wife and I didn't like putting our things on the toilet seat when showering. The house keeping were great they knew exactly what hygiene was as our room was cleaned from top to bottom everyday were very happy and cheerful every day.
The breakfast was really nice and we had loads of choices to choose from. The kitchen staff need some training on how to be helpfull and how to smile. I had a hard time asking for a simple thing called a jug of milk. The view from the restaurant is blocked by the disgusting look of the tourist building, which is not in the same design as bergens original theme. In my opinion it should be replaced by another style that would wow visitors from around the world. I also loved the bar , Decor and the bar staff. They had a vast knowledge of whiskey, beers of the world, wines, cocktails and would love a challenge as they have won a number of awards for their craft and wisdom.
Over all we liked the hotel, and if finances permit, we'll come back.
By the way. We stayed in May 2013

Room Tip: Check on the size of the bathroom first and don't get a room near the stairs or elevator.

We stayed at room 616 for two nights.

Good parts:
Location was spot on, right in front of the fish market, very central, we didn't have to take any public transport.
Room was clean, bed was comfortable, room size was good for two people.
Great breakfast!
We had a great view of the harbour from the room.

Some glitches:
Wireless connection was bad so I had to resort using my mobile internet connection.
Parking is not free, 190 NOK per day for public parking about 300m from hotel, get it stamped at the hotel to get 20% off.
Walls were quite thin, I could hear next door chatting.
If you stay here over the weekend, note that there will be some 'party' noise in the middle of the night because it is so central.
Our room door was quite noisy as it takes some extra force to close.
Toilet is quite small.
Beds are comfortable but really tiny, we had two thin single beds join together, if you are of bigger size, it may be a problem.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the water for good views, but note that it will be noisy at weekend nights.
