A small area, but with good weather, dusk is a great time to walk along the harbour into this area (the shops were shut at this time).

Fairy story buildings, tall ship, lovely harbour with sun setting - just lovely...

the Bryggen wharf area is one of the most unusually beautiful cityscapes we have been to, and the moment you step into the numerious alleyways in between the brightly coloured wooden houses, you get transported into a different era.
not many houses are vertically straight, ditto almost all doors and windows and that is the charm!! very interesting shops and further a great place to sit-back, have a couple of drinks and watch the sun-set.

The ancient houses of the traders who came to Bergen were barely saved from urban renewal. Now they stand, crammed against each other, giving us a look at the hard realities of life in this cold country half a millennium in the past.

With two cruise liners disgorging passengers, the most popular sights were mobbed early, but the crowd began to thin out later. We must say, however, that the principal reason to cruise this area should be to sail the fjords. A few hours ashore in a minivan simply is not going to afford a proper feel for this rather exotic part of the world.

We did enjoy what we saw while simply strolling the streets very much.
