Grand Hotel Terminus
Ranked #20 of 50 Hotels in Bergen
Reviewed 26 August 2010

Booked a Sognefjord Adventure Independent Rail Tour through Authentic Scandinavia, Bergen being our last destination, where we had 3 nights. Opted for a cheaper, category 2 hotel - category 1 being First Hotel Marin, #11 on Tripadvisor and 253 Euro per person more expensive and as it turned out the furtherest away from everything. Category 2 should have been Augustin Hotel (#3 on Tripadvisor), but due to lack of twin rooms we were allocated Grand Terminus Hotel (#5 on Tripadvisor) instead. Very happy about that!
Hotel rooms have a nice modern decor, the communal areas a lovely old fashioned feel. Fantastic downstairs area where you can get free teas, coffees and fruit, as well as probably quite expensive drinks from the bar and meals. Breakfasts are great and plentiful. The hotel has bicycles to rent out for free, which can be used in the nearby park.
If you arrive to Bergen by boat it's a 20 minute walk from the harbour through the city centre, but if by train it's right next to the rail station. At the station you can buy a Bergen Card for public transport and discounts at museums. Round the corner from the Grand Terminus Hotel there is a tram which will take you to Edvard Grieg's Museum - Troldhaugen, round the corner are also buses which will take you to the Gamle Bergen - Old Bergen Museum, and a free bus to the city centre and Bryggen. In the little cobbled streets near the hotel walking towards the centre there is a great Cafe Aura with fresh, delicious and not too expensive food.
All highly recommended. Would return to Bergen and to Grand Terminus Hotel.

I took the airport bus from Bergen airport to the main bus station. It was right next to the train station and behind the train station was the hotel. A taxi would have cost about 400kr and the bus was 90kr. I stayed there just one night as I was taking a cruise ship in the am next day. The docks are right next to the fish market. It took me 10 min to walk to the cruise docks. I had a meal in the pub in the train station. Word to the wise. Meals/food as said by others is very expensive in all Scandinavian countries. About double what you would expect to pay in the U.S. They did have scaffolding on the inside part of the hotel, but they did not work at night. The single room beds are just that, single, which is the norm for Europe. The room had plenty of room but the bath was small.

We paid almost 1200 NOK, meaning 151 Euros /194 USD for a tiny room in which the window was not closing properly, so we could hear the noise from the street and hardly slept at all during the night. The carpet was full of stains, the evacuation of the sink was blocked, it was smelly and not clean. In addition, parts of the carpet in the hall were missing and there was a disgusting smell. Even if it was high season, this price was a rip off, considering the poor quality of the room. We have chosen the hotel because of the location close to the railway station, but we have regretted our decision.

Our advice for the manager:
If you still have such rooms which are not renovated in your hotel and you want still to rent them then you should at least have the decency to charge a significantly lower price. This way, customers would at least know what to expect. Maybe you should sleep in one of these rooms yourself and pay from your own pocket 1200 NOK per night to better understand our reaction.

I am sorry that you felt the price was to high. In the very busy month of august a standard room in Bergen would cost at normal rate around NOK 1900-2100 and our standard rate is NOK 1875 so you have had a discount. Our renovation team has been in nearly all the rooms, but as stated in our web site we still have a few rooms on our list and they are all sold at our lower rates. We are currently working on renovations in the corridor on one floor and that is why a bit of the carpet was not there during your visit. Your technical problems with closing of a window would easily be taken care of if you would ask for help. I can assure you that we cannot accept bad cleaning of rooms, but the older rooms tends to be evaluated lower in cleanlines than our new renovated rooms. Last but not least - please remember to ask for another room if you do not like the one you get in the first place. We are most flexible and will find a solution and another room you like better when we are given the option.

the standard rooms are very small. We had to change as there was no chest of drawers or any shelf at all. Only 5 hangars. I asked to change as we were staying 4 nights. We were granted an upgrade to a junior suite which was fantastic. Breakfast is very good and well organized. The waitress are very efficient.
However our room was not cleaned properly , Floors were not vacumed after our arrival
I would recommend anyway as reception , concierge, location and hotel very nice

I stayed here 4 nights with my best friend- and we had a great stay! Bergen is such a lovely city - and this hotel is practically in the middle. Lying right beside the train station you have an excellent startingpoint for your trip. It's close to everything :)

Now, for most tourists Bergen is maybe a small city. In Norwegian counting it is the second largest city, but very intimate. I chose this hotel because we travelled to Bergen by train and I didn't want to go far... ;)

Arriving at the hotel we were met by a young nice girl who ammediately gave us an upgrade since we were staying for a while. That was nice :) we came to our room in 2nd floor and had a window out to the street. Not much traffic there. The room was large, had a good bed and a nice bathroom. A flat screen tv was also there and the range of channels was all the "important " norwegian, as well as some BBC channels.

The breakfast was good, a lot to choose between. There was also a lounge where you could get tea and coffee and look at different newspapers. They are also famous for their whiskeybar.

There is a "writers room" with two computers offering internetacess, but the machines were very slow so if you can, bring your own and connect in your room.

I truly loved this hotel and when going back to Bergen, this is the place I would stay :):)

This hotel was clearly built at a time when most travelers arrived in Bergen via the train station across the street. Although it has aged, it has some of its grandeur and much of its charm. The service is great, we got a free upgrade and the room was very nice. It is a short walk to the train station and the center of Bergen. If you are a light sleeper and have the windows open you might notice the trains and buses outside but outside of that it is a great place to stay.

We really liked the location of Grand Terminus. It is right next to the train and bus station which made getting in and out of the city pretty effortless. And, it is just a few minutes walk from the city center which really cut down on some of the tourist traffic and made for a nice quiet sleep. The room was small, but comfortable and clean and appeared to have been recently refurbished. The breakfast buffet was one of the better ones we encountered in our trip to Norway. Given that all hotels are expensive, I think the Grand Terminus is a good balance of price and quality.
