“A well functioning hotel”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

At this hotel everything works well, i.e. booking, reception, rooms, breakfast and the service in general. My only criticism is that you need very long legs to sit comfortably on the sofas and chairs in the hall.

The hotel is in a wonderful old stone building right next to the historic wooden shops and facing the water. The decor is very modern and charming. Didn't like there was no coffee maker in the room. My TV remote did not work and the TV was on the wall so I had to climb on a chair to change channels, this was very inconvenient. It was very warm in the room and the windows only open a few inches, besides when you are facing the water it is very loud at night, even a midnight. Nice breakfast buffet.

Room Tip: The water side is a great view, but very loud if its warm and you want the windows open.

The good news is the hotel has a great location, the building has character and the staff are nice. We didn't stay for the meals so we have not commented.

We took a Superior Double Room. We were given a room on the 5th floor with low ceilings and windows that start at chest hight. The rooms on the lower floors seem to have high ceilings and large windows so I would say avoid the 5th floor.

The rooms appear to have a design geared to looking good and making the guests as uncomfortable as possible.

The bathrooms are specially designed with sliding glass doors so that when you are in bed you can see and hear everything your partner does at the sink or in the shower and hear the rest from the toilet area.

There are three electrical outlets in the room, one at the desk, one on the floor by the closet far away from the desk and the bed or any furniture at all, and one in the bathroom.

Since there are no bedside electrical outlets, if you want to charge a phone and have it on the bedside stand, about the only way to do this is to plug it in in the bathroom outlet and thread the cord through the sliding glass door to the bedside stand. This wouldn’t be terrible except the bathroom outlet only works if the bathroom lights are on. So every night we would take out two of the three bathroom lights so that we could charge a phone by the bed without having the entire room lit up all night.

The computers in the business centre are almost impossible to figure out how to print a document. They have some simplified operating system that rules out doing most things. Plug in your USB stick and it doesn't appear and the staff doesn't know what to do. They were however nice enough to print a document I emailed to them.

It’s all really quite silly and it made us sorry we didn’t stay in one of the two Radissons that are just across the street.

All this being said, I can't say we suffered, it was all just very silly for hotel of this quality and we would chose another place next time.

Room Tip: Avoid the 5th floor which has low ceilings and windows that start chest high

Previous reviewers have given chapter and verse about how good this Hotel is. Well its all true folks. We enjoyed the whole experience and would highly recommend it. The staff were warm and friendly...helpful in all areas.
The food was excellent value......no question when you see the prices in town.
The only small criticism was the glass walled bathroom.....needed a tad more privacy in sound and vision.

Bergen was great....and all the reviews will point you to the Clarion Collection for making it so. Thanks to all concerned at the Hotel.

Room Tip: Ask in advance for a room high and on the front. Take a (travelers) hair dryer...the one in our roo...

Location in Bryggen is perfect, right by the quay and a 10 minute walk from the fish market and funicular. Both airport express buses stop less than 30 meters from the hotel and run every 15 minutes.
The staff were all friendly and helpful and our room was fine - a superior room on the 5th floor. Previous reviewers have remarked on the glass bathroom door. It doesn't give you an awful lot of privacy but the toilet is set back in an alcove so it doesn't kill the romance completely! There were nice l'occitane toiletries and a heated towel rail that you can switch on or off.
Wi fi is free and worked well.
All meals are complimentary and the standard of food was good and plentiful.Lots of variety for breakfast and a hot plate where you can cook your own eggs. There is free tea, coffee and hot drinks all day and it was always well stocked. The evening meal is a huge bonus - there was always at least one hot dish plus potatoes, rice and pasta and quite often soup. As well as this there are cold meats, cheeses, fish, fresh bread and a huge variety of salads. Also a simple dessert. It was all delicious and help yourself between 6 and 9. I have almost forgotten the pancakes that are available every day from 3pm and you cook them yourself - wonderful. Bergen is so expensive that to have this food available if you want it is amazing.
If you like heights ask for the key to the clock tower. It is really interesting explaining the history of Bergen and has spectacular views. We would highly recommend this hotel.

A "free" evening meal is really something that sets the good mood after a long day at work or tourism. The quality of the meal is great, with a good variety to choose between, and one hot dish each day. The breakfast was great too, with a orange juice squeezer that made amazingly good juice!!

Its a 5-10min walk to the most central part of the city center, but as you walk along the harbor, this is no problem. Staff was friendly, but can always improve even more. Clean rooms, and a comfortable bed. The room I had was a bit dark, which is also worsen by the dark furnitures. I would have liked more lights, and those who prefer less could just dim it.

All in all the best hotel in Bergen so far, and I have stayed in a few already.

What a fantastic place to stay! It's in a great location, and the decor is reminiscent of the movie Frozen! :) The shower was a little funny, with the shower door/wall only going about half way across, so that got a little messy. Staff were friendly, and meals are included in your stay!

Room Tip: As for a room facing the water or the street. We ended up looking out on a parking lot/offices.
