Great full breakfast, afternoon Swedish pancakes for afternoon snacks, and delicious dinner of beef stroganoff. Hotel price was higher than most, but it was good value. To top it off, we got views of the harbor & downtown!!

We booked 2 rooms for our family of 4. We were given rooms on different floors, but it wasn't an issue because the kids are older. Both rooms were spacious and nice. The frosted bathroom doors that other guests have commented on didn't bother us. The meals offered were very good. Breakfast was extensive and dinner was great. For dinner they offered the choice of 2 entrees (one meat and one fish). We all found something we liked. They have a water cooler with both still and sparkling water, which was a nice touch. Location of the hotel couldn't be better. Overall a very nice stay

We had a memorable two night stay at the Clarion Havnekontoret. We would not look forward to returning and were shocked at the state of a number one ranked hotel. This would be a two-star review, but for the friendliness of most of the desk staff we encountered.

First, on check-in, the front desk was bizarrely short of room keys. I've never encountered this before ever. I think the room keys cost about a penny for a stack of one hundred. We have a large crew and like to have two room keys per room -- and if you ever want to charge something you have to get another extra key. Odd, but ok.

Second, the room design is simply hideous. Perhaps the worst decor -- functional set up of a room I've ever seen. We didn't get the rooms we were promised -- but the nice front desk people moved us on day two. The cost of the move was to have two rooms for our group where the bathroom (wc) does not have a workable door. This is a problem because in Rooms 523 and 525 and other rooms, there is only a glass window partially frosted for a "door" for the WC which faces the beds and then the outside world. There are bizarrely no sheers for the windows. The room lighting is appalling -- you are always in darkness. So to go to the bathroom with any privacy: you need to close the room window entirely, but then you need to go to the bathroom in the dark (lights out). This is ungood: it is a straight shot out to about 12 windows of the nearby facing building. And if you want ambient light, you are participating in some bizarre Nordic performance art. Not romantic. Not private. Not right with the kids. Just idiotic design. Frost the doors entirely or install proper doors; privacy has its place in going to the bathroom -- or at least, support choice.

Third -- and this is a good point -- there is a cool tower off of the sixth floor. But, don't let the kids go unsupervised. The tower had lots of beer bottles. That's because this is a reduced services model hotel -- they don't have enough staff to keep the place clean. But it is a good photo opp. and we enjoyed late night sunset there with the camera.

Fourth, another positive is the location in the Hanseatic district which is historic. The hotel should be getting five stars -- but the reduced services model is a killer. And the room design is simply atrocious. We love Trip Advisor, but the positive reviews are often from single travelers or from those who did not have the courtyard facing rooms with the straight shot bathrooms. Our room 413 had the bad glass window-door thing facing the wall, not the beds, so the issue was not as acute.

Staying here was a struggle. From global standards, subtract a star or two for Norwegian hotels based on my experience staying in more than six of them.

Antique hotel, built in the 1920's with good food. Breakfast buffet until 11 o'clock. Supper buffet until 21 o'clock. We enjoyed the sauna and steam bath. Fitness gym so I could do my workout. Comfortable bed, but it's actually 2 beds and they fall apart during the night.

We spent 1 night here with our 4 month old son. The hotel is of a very high European standard and has an excellent location. The free tea/coffee and afternoon pancakes were great and the common areas are a nice place to relax (although the purple palate of the entire hotel can be a bit much!).

The only drawbacks were: thin walls and noisy plumbing (could hear flushing and showers from other rooms); the "evening meal" included was a very extensive salad bar; the bathroom was only separated from the room by a sliding glass partition. As per usual in Scandinavia/Europe a double room is 2 single beds pushed together.

Overall a good hotel but it's cost reflects the overall price of the area and it's excellent location rather than an a luxury hotel.

The historic exterior was lovely! The interior of the lobby was charming and comfortable, with interesting little passages and alcoves to explore. The hotel staff were all very friendly and recommended a delicious sushi restaurant around the corner from the hotel. The room was not very large, but clean and well-appointed. Breakfast and afternoon snacks were included in the room rate, and tasty! Perfect location! Did not quite feel like a 5-star hotel (which is what we expected given the exorbitant price), but definitely enjoyed the stay. I don't think you could find a better hotel in Bergen.
