“unpleasant experience”
Reviewed 18 August 2010

We arrived to the Clarion on a beautiful afternoon, 4 people with 6 pieces of luggage.
We encountered our first shock when a lady at the front desk told us that she was the only one in the hotel, while handing out a key from a storage room - where we were supposed to get the trolley, to carry the luggage to our room.

The room was dark, small and gave an unpleasant feeling of untidiness.
The bedcover was full of stains, the table and the books full of dust and prints from the bottles or glasses that were standing on the table.
But the worst part was the toilet – it was dirty and had hair on it.

We stayed in room nr. 401 - it was so noicy that I would wake up evey morning at 6:00 with a feeling that I've slept in the middle of a buzy highway.

They do not have regular soap in this hotel- you have an all purpose shampoo hanging on the wall. When I asked for a regular soap the front desk screamed at me, claiming that it’s the first time in 4 years that someone is requesting a regular soap, and that I had to bring my own soap if I'm so sensitive.
The corridors of the hotel seemed to lack attention for ages and the carpets and furniture in the open spaces oozed damp, with dirty glasses and coffee cups all over. In conclusion, when we arrived for breakfast we found ourselves surrounded by dirty messy trays with food thrown on them and people trying to get as much food as they can, as we discovered later, the food would be swiped away at exactly 10:00.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location – but there are plenty hotels in the area - I guess they have to be better than the clarion, as it is difficult to be as poor as Clarion really is.

We picked this hotel, as we were ending the Norway in a Nutshell tour in Bergen and wanted something right on the Bryggen. We were off the next AM to Copenhagen and only had time for a quick spin around the area. The NIN tour train arrives in Bergen about 8:30 and we hopped a cab to be able to get to the hotel in time for the included light supper. We got to the restaurant just before nine to find the buffet tables completely wiped out with no hope of any replenishment. We begged the only person working in the kitchen to rustle us up some bread and cheese. That was very nice of him, but we were very disappointed that the hotel is not set up to deal with NIN travelers. They know when the train arrives. Several other people came a little later and were even more distressed. Other than that, the hotel is situated right where we wanted to be, and the room was tight, but well designed and comfy. It is very convenient to the Airport Shuttle bus, which leaves from right across the street.

We tried to use the WiFi in the room, but the code they gave us didn't work. I don't know if there was a system wide problem, but we got little help from the front desk on this.

This hotel is expensive!!! Good location, as it is one block away from the wharf. The rooms are nicely decorated, funky, different than most other hotels. If you are coming from the Bergen Airport, take a shuttle bus (looks like coach bus but not sure what it is called, it can be found where the taxis are)- the shuttle bus is 95 NOK per person vs. abt 350 that other cabs wanted. The bus drops you off right infront of the hotel. When we called them on the phone, they said they were all booked, but we found openings online and reserved it thru the internet. Overall, I liked the hotel- the con was the price.

I can not understand all the 5-star-ratings of this hotel, but it might be that there are a lot of not very experienced travellers who have rated it. I work as airline-crew and we usually stay at the Radisson Blu Bryggen, right next to this hotel. Radisson Blu might need more refurbishment and updated style in rooms, but the service at Radisson is far better than at the Clarion Collection Havnekontoret. The reason we chose Havnekontoret was the rate. Almost 1/3 of what Radisson wanted to charge.
The hotel is ok. The modern interior-style does not attract us in particular but I guess a lot of guest get blinded by it. We got a room facing the backyard even though we requested a room with seaview more than 8 months in advance.... wonder who requested earlier than us?? The room is quite small. We had no space for the second suitcase and had to place it under the desk. Comfortable beds. The interior in the room as in the rest of the hotel is too dark (dark brown, dark lilac etc). The bathroom is small but with an ok size shower. Minibar, iron, ironboard. No room-service. Hotel offers breakfast, tea &coffee 24 hours, waffles between 3-6pm and supper/light meal between 6-9pm. A good choice if you are travelling on a budget. The breakfast -buffet was a disappointing experience. You had to fry your own egg and bacon (saves staff and costs) and that ended being a Japanese woman frying eggs for a whole bus of guests and no, we did not have time to wait for that. The boiled eggs, beans and sausages was cold. Cofffee from dispenser with no coffee-milk (just lowfat milk from a dispenser). Personell in the breakfast -area seemed stressed and had no control.
All in all ok because the price is right, but I would prefer Radisson Blu at an later occasion.

As part of our Europe trip, we booked one night in Clarion Collection Hotel Bergen . I booked a Family room because this was the only room for 3 .

After a 7 hours train trip from Oslo we walked from the station to Bryggen . The hotel is clearly visible from there. The exterior is beautiful and has a very nice 'Lighthouse' on top of the hotel .

We checked in at 16:00 but had to wait 10 minutes before we could check in . The receptionist was'n so friendly - it was for her just a habit - and we got a room on the 2nd floor . We took the one and only elevator where we could take our luggage in . But it is used by guests and staff so we had to wait another 5 minutes. Our room (225) wasn't big and had an ugly view. It was just a standard room with a sofa that becomes a bed but 50% more expensive ! I expected more for a 325 euro / 420 $ room for one night !

I asked the reception if that was a family room and she said yes .

Our room had a TV, a desk with brochures, a basket with food ( Free or not ? ), a big bed, a sofa bed and a bathroom with bath . You have no privacy in the bathroom, there is a glass door but if you sit at the desk you can see someone sitting on the toilet . The glass door was also dirty . In the bathroom stood a small bottle of shower gel but with a small card and it says that it isn't free .

We had a view on the inner court / cars / air co units of the hotel . An ugly view in a beautiful Bergen . There was a half-broken thermometer and it said it was 23 C in our room . I didn't see an air co so it was hot in our room .

The hotel offers from 15:00 till 17:00 free pancakes. You have to make them yourself on a hot plate . From 18:00 till 21:00 there is a Light Diner with one hot meal and many salads ( Mostly potatoes ). Even the cooks eat from the buffet so be quick ! Everything is self-service even the clearing of your table . Breakfast is served every day from 06:30 till 10:00 and in the weekend from 07:00 till 11:00 . The quality is good but the choice is limited . Except for the bread, many choices !

In the lobby is a library and a 'safe' with 2 computers in it . Around the left corner is a second and smaller elevator, but we noticed it only the next day . You can visit the upstairs 'Lighthouse' . There you have a beautiful view of Bergen and the Harbor . You have to ask a special key at the reception and return it . Definitely worth a visit !

Downstairs is a small fitness ( 6 machines ), a sauna and a steam cabin. It is very quiet so you will have much privacy .

The hotel has an excellent location on Bryggen . Just 15 minutes from the Station and only 5 minutes to Floibanen . But the hotel hasn't got a restaurant but you can order room service from a Pizza company from the area .

I expected more from the room because it was so expensive but it has a perfect location in Bergen ! In one day, you've seen Bergen .

Tip : Take the Floibanen to the hill and enjoy a beautiful view of Bergen !

This was the one hotel I didn't really research before our trip to Scandinavia as I was told it was the best in Bergen and a harbour view was a must. We booked an upgraded room accordingly. The hotel and our room were lovely. However, what we didn't know was that there is a busy street along the harbour, and our room was quite noisy even with the windows closed. When we asked about moving the next morning, we were told there was a choice: either no view or noise. We were never told about the pancake snack by the staff or in the hotel info booklet until I read it in a recent review on tripadviser tonight. We did know about the free dinner, which was very welcome when we arrived late from Oslo after doing Norway in a Nutshell.. It and the breakfast buffet were mediocre however. We could never get the wifi to work. I tried the posted phone number for the help line, and found the line got disconnected without reaching a person. When we asked staff for help, they simply shrugged. As we had to leave for the airport within 15 minutes of breakfast opening, we asked if we could have a breakfast box, as other hotels had suggested we do. We were assured this would not be necessary as everything would be set up when we arrived a few minutes early. In fact they were still setting up when we left , 15 minutes after breakfast officially opened. That we got to the airport in time was actually a miracle, as we did not get our wake up call, despite checking that it was in place before we went to bed. Again, we got a shrug when we brought this serious lapse to the attention of desk staff.
Not an experience i would repeat.

Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret, Bergen

Couple (mid sixties) from Aberdeen 31 July 2010

My husband and I stayed in Hotel Havnekontoret for 4 nights in July 2010. Also stayed there in July 2009. Booked with Expedia. Regular flights from Aberdeen to Bergen with SAS/Wideroe. Flybussen from airport to hotel at bus terminus. Excellent hotel in ideal position. Room was very comfortable, twin beds together, table and chairs, TV, fridge, bathroom with shower over bath, (no safe). We had harbour view from our fourth floor window. Very nice large lounge area, with reception, bar, library and small room with free internet. Reception staff very friendly and helpful and spoke good English. 360 degree view of Bergen from Turret. Walking around historic Bryggen very interesting. Funicular up to Floyen takes about 5 minutes. Spectacular views from there. Restaurant at top. Also cable car goes to Mt Ulriken. There is the fish market, aquarium and many museums and churches to visit. Cruiseships in Bergen most days. Many fjord trips available from Bergen both for few hours and all day trips. Went on “Norway on a Nutshell last year”. Very good trip on train, bus, ship on inland fjord and train. Eating and drinking out very expensive in Norway. Weather disappointing this year - rained a lot.
