“Great city-centre hotel”
Reviewed 11 September 2012

The Hanseatic Hotel is right by the Fish Market in Bergen, Norway. It is in an old building but is modern and comfortable with all the facilities you could wish for.

The hotel has great style and flair with an interesting mixture of textures.

It is very centrally located. Although we had a room right on the road, there was no noise.

Great style and flair in a central location with great service. Amazing mix of ancient wooden structure with modern features, velvet, crystal and gold accents. The contrast of textures - rough, unpainted, unsanded boards with deep red, purple, gold and green velvet is sumtuous.

Great breakfast offered with room - although the coffee machine is far too complicated and the wait to get your own coffee while your co-habitants accidentally press the button to "clean the machine" can be more than one can bear in the morning. Go for the "regular" coffee from the urn if there is a line-up.

Room Tip: In the summer, the street side can get loud. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room at the back...

We stayed here for 2 separate nights at either end of our trip. The hotel is very centrally located - we took the bus from the airport and were dropped off at the fish market which is just across the road.
We had different rooms on each occasion and both were extremely comfortable and very quiet. The first room was in the older part of the building and the second was newly done. The bathrooms are of a extremely high standard and very clean.
The breakfasts were great with lots of choice. We did not have any problems with any of the receptionists who were all extremely charming and helpful.
I made the booking direct with the hotel by telephone and asked for a quiet room. I suggest those that are worried about the noise do the same.

We had read lots of concerns about noise but asked for a quiet room and got suite 340. Its interior location made it very quiet and a little dark but it was super clean and well equipped. Great beds, wonderful heated floor in an ultra modern bathroom. Lots of choice for breakfast at the buffet which was nicely laid out and buttery chocolate croissants to die for. Like everything else in Norway a bit expensive but well well worth it.

Four of us stayed two nights. It was full of character, dark wood and old furniture. The rooms were big and very clean as were the bathrooms with lovely big bath tubs as well as shower cubicles. The room at the front of the hotel was noisy in the morning as our stay was mid week and they were cutting up the tarmac outside. Also the smell of food from the restaurant below meant we couldn't open the window and it was very hot. The AC wasn't very efficient so recommend a back room. The bed was really comfortable and there were tea making facilities in our room. The breakfast choice for us as vegans was as good as expected with soya milk, fruit, cereal, excellent bread selection (always is in Norway) and toaster. Very good coffee We would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back

Stayed in this hotel for two nights while touring Scandanavia. Staff were extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and accommodating. Hotel had old world charm with many up-to-date features, however some rooms do not have air conditioning. Beds are very comfortable, but if you have a street side room it can get a little loud at night though it didn't bother us. Great breakfast (croissants were incredible!) and be sure to try the Mexican restaurant inside the hotel!

This hotel is in an old Bergen style wooden building in the heart of Bergen harbor. Easy to get to all tourist attractions. Everything was clean and there were plenty of modern touches particularly in the bathroom. However, I was given a room on the fourth floor with NO windows. There were four 4 by 6 skylights in the dormer roof which i could not even see out of. The room was also quite small and I banged my head on the fire sprinkler every time i went to bed. There was also no air contitioning to speak of but the hotel did provide a fan. Fortunately, Bergen was experiencing a cold summer or the lack of windows coupled with the no air could have been a problem. I did not complain (long story) so I cannot say whether the hotel would have made a switch but I would not recommend this situation to anyone. By the time you arrive the cancellation period is over so if they won't change your room you are stuck.

Room Tip: If you insist on staying here because of the good reviews be warned -- if you are on the fourth floo...
