“THE place to stay in Bergen”
Reviewed 12 August 2009

I stayed at SKUTEVIKEN guesthouse for 3 nights in April as part of a trip to Bergen and Oslo.

I flew into Bergen airport and caught the coach into town, getting off at the final stop and then its a short 5-10 minute stroll to the guesthouse. The guesthouse is down a narrow alley, in a charming area of wooden housing. but easy enough to find. Solveig was there waiting for me when I arrived and quickly dealt with payment, showed me to my room(s) and made me very welcome (speaking perfect English)

The rooms I had consisted of a small lounge with kitchen facilities - a fridge,double hob,sink, kettle and all the associated cutlery and pans etc I'd need. There was also some pasta and rice if I needed it, a nice touch.
The bed room though some may consider it small was more than adequate , the bed nice and comfy. This led through to the bathroom, with shower cubicle, basin and toilet. The floor is heated as well which I guess would be quite nice in the winter.

Solveig pointed out some nearby supermarkets where I could get food etc for my stay, just a few minutes up the hill.

Bergen town centre is I'd say about a 15 minute walk , a few small hills to negotiate , though you can walk around the quaysides to avoid these hills.

The guesthouse is the sort of place that when you return of an evening you feel at home. Its nice to sit down on comfy couch or armchair and put your feet up

Solveig and her husband are welcoming but inobtrusive hosts. I sense they are proud of Their city and want people to go away with nothing but good thoughts about both Bergen and their guesthouse. That was certainly the case when I bid them farewell to move on to Oslo.

I'll certainly stay here again when i return to Bergen, would recommend it without hesitation to others.

The location, the guesthouse and the view were unbeatable. Absolutely no complains about this place. Most importantly, Solveig and Elvind have got to be the nicest hosts I've ever come across. Extremely warm people and you can't go wrong if you pick this guesthouse when you visit Bergen : )

Solveig and Elvind - if you are reading this, you've been missed and thank you for being such lovely hosts!

We chose the guest house after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay. The quaint wooden building is a great alternative to the uniform drudgery of most hotels. You are a ten minute walk from the historic part of town. One big advantage is the personal contact from the owners. You can get real good advice about the area. Bergen is an expensive spot - I paid the equivalent of £10 for a beer - but if you hunt around you can do better. All in all we cannot receommend the Skuteviken enough.

This Guest House is in a great location and in a really cute old wooden house. We had the top floor which had plenty of space apart from headroom if you are tall because of the sloping ceilings.
Bergen is a fantastic place to visit, stunning scenery, lovely people and excellent food. Prices are high but there is somwhere for everyones budget.
Highly recommend this as a place to stay.

We started our 10 day holiday in Norway at Skuteviken Guesthouse and were delighted. The apartment we had was small but immaculate with new modern fittings, really comfortable bed and sofa, plus there were stacks of little hooks and storage drawers everywhere to put your things. Being able to hang up your coat is handy as it rains a lot in Bergen! The owners were extremely friendly and helpful, full of tips (recommending good value places to eat, which we tried, and were excellent!), and we learned a lot about Norway from them. The guest house is in a quaint wooden district a few minutes' pleasant walk to the city centre. In an expensive country like Norway having a kitchenette makes things a lot easier as you can keep costs down by making some of your own meals, or for storing food (and beer!) in the fridge - we had everything we needed at Skutevikens.

My boyfriend and I stayed in Bergen for 2 days at the end of our road trip around Norway. We were recommended Skuteviken's by a nearby B&B which was fully booked.

In short, Skuteviken's Gjesthus was the highlight of our accommodation in Norway! The price, which was approx 80GBP for the night, was the cheapest we had and the accommodation was the highest standard. I gave this "5 stars", not because it was a superb luxury apartment (it wasn't!) but because it was quirky, very good value, had a kitchenette (a rare beast on our travels - in Norway the tea & coffee-making facilities are often absent!), and generally was a very pleasant surprise.

Good points about this apartment:
* the bed was really a double bed! Everywhere else we stayed had two singles pushed together.
* the decor was bright, airy, and a bit kooky! Excellent!
* cooking facilities, including pans and crockery. Free "dry foods" (rice, sugar, tea).
* big windows
*separate living room, bedroom and bathroom
* lovely new bathroom, heated floor.
* good security - the owners keep the front door locked, and when you leave you post the key through the letterbox.
* "parking" nearby, not a private carpark, but there was always space opposite the old pier just across the road. Free parking is like gold dust in Bergen.

Bad points:
* sofa a little sagging
* bed a bit hard
* watch out for your head on the low-hanging chandelier thingy!!

But honestly - if we could have had our entire holiday staying in a place like this, we would have been thrilled!

See pictures for an idea of the room.

I would recommend this guesthouse to absolutely anyone holidaying in Bergen! It was a refreshing change to the expensive, sparse rooms that can be booked in other places.

  • Liked — Excellent value for money and lovely decor.
  • Disliked — That we only discovered it on our penultimate day.

Skuteviken Gjestehus
July 2008. Truly the land of the midnight sun.
Stayed here for 2 weeks using as a base to travel/see the region. Local to Bergen itself-short walk to the wooded fronted shops,Bryggen, you see in the guide books and postcards! Everythings within reach-well positioned. Hosts/owners are a delight and very friendly. Plenty to keep you occupied in Bergen.
Utilised the local shops to cook for ouselves [the little kitchen area is great for this] and so experienced shopping and eating, Norwegian style! There are grocery type stores very close too, and it helps the budget! (Nonetheless there are plenty of places for food-restaurants,cafe's etc, if finances aren't too tight))
Great bathroom [shower] and super comfy bed. We also enjoyed experiencing Norwegian television and found the teletext weather forecasts invaluable.
Utilised Bergen Card for museums and Floyen / funicular (cable car) to high point over looking Bergen below... amazing!
Enjoyed short harbour trip too-good perspective of the land mass from off shore.
Enjoyed a Norway in a nutshell (contact tourist information) trip-involving trains,and (breathtaking) fjord trip...
Can recommend various books if wish to contact by email.
Even learnt some of the language in preparation (care of ebay & Amazon)-though English language is widely spoken locals seemed to appreciate attempts to make some effort of dialogue in their own tongue.
Fantastic trip-made extra special by the accomodation and owners. Many thanks, Nik & Gill (Nottingham. U.K.)
