Owner description: The Art Nouveau Centre was opened by HM Queen Sonja of Norway on 6 June 2003, and is a national centre for Art Nouveau/ Jugendstil. The museum occupies the listed Svaneapoteket pharmacy building, right in the heart of Aalesund. Much of the original interior of the building has been preserved and restored. The museum has permanent and temporary exhibitions spread over three floors. Exhibits include a broad selection of Norwegian art nouveau objects, from advertising to jewellery, in addition to several multi-media shows. The Art Nouveau Centre has a gift shop and a cafe, where you can enjoy a nice slice of cake and a cup of coffee.

“The Art Nouveau Centre in Alesund is a delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

Visited here for the 2nd time in May while on a Cruise to the Fjords. The centre houses authentic interiors, objects of the period (1904) and also an interesting Multimedia programme covering the period when the city was devastated by fire. An exhibition of works by artists of the period, Galle, Mackintosh,Munch, Bull and Knox. In an adjacent building Museum KUBE (all included in the entry price of NOK 75 with children and students at NOK 40) there are visiting artists. When we were here in May we just caught a beautiful exhibition of Art Nouveau exhibits of photographs of stain glass widows set up in vertical blocks and lit from within. It was breathtaking. I treated myself to a large coffee table book on Art Nouveau works of art with one of my favourites adorning the cover, Klimt's The Kiss. Norway is not a cheap place to visit for us but my word, it is worth every penny.

“Bad value for the money”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

You find more jugend history and interesting architecture by walking around in downtown Alesund then in the house i question. As a local who has heard a lot propaganda for this institution it was a big disappointment

“Could do much better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2014

They have some quite splendid Art Nouveau pieces: jewellery, table ware, furniture and stained glass windows.
Also the description of how Alesund was rebuilt after the fire was most instructive.
However, one wonders how much they are trying to attract international visitors as many of the exhibits only have a Norwegian description. This is particularly surprising as most Norwegians speak very good English, so as a minimum providing an English description should not be too taxing.

“Beautiful Art Nouveau Building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014 via mobile

This building is a beautiful and well preserved example of the period. The entrance is into an old pharmacy with the original shop fittings. Upstairs there are some beautifully furnished rooms complete with table settings. An enjoyable peek into the past.
