“Not central but beautiful location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2011

Although located some 20 minutes drive from the center this family run hotel is situated in a beautiful and quiet area right on the fjord. I recommend going for the delux rooms that are very spacious and tastefully decorated with excellent views of the fjord and mountains.

Room Tip: Delux rooms on the top floor

Located on highway E39 at the shore of the fjord next to the ferry landing some 15km outside of Alesund, the hotel enjoys a picturesque setting with panoramic views across the water. Though outside of Alesund, it nevertheless provides a comfortable base from which to explore the area, and it is ideally situated for those continuing their travel via the ferry. Ample parking is available in front of the hotel.
Privately owned and operated by proprietor Inga, a renowned artist, one is assured a warm welcome. Inga is a fountain of information on the history of her property and the area at large.
Our deluxe corner room #209 elicited a "VOW" upon entry. It is airy, bright with two walls of glass sliding doors providing access to the wrap around wooden deck. Bedding, walls etc. were all in white, adding to the feeling of airiness, designer touches everywhere. Comfortable, large overstuffed couch chairs, desk, 48"flat screen TV with the usual tree channels, all combined to the feeling to be in a private home rather than a hotel. A padded lounge chair and a wicker chair with side table on the deck added to that and invited one to sit in the late afternoon watching ferries come and go and enjoying the awesome view. A telephone and a hair dryer would be worthwhile enhancements to the room's inventory. Everything in the room and the tiled bathroom was absolutely spotlessly clean. Our bathroom design layout left some to be desired, i.e. awkward toilet placement and a shower without curtain or any form of enclosure, however, the comfortable room and deck made up for these inconveniences.
The building itself, lobby, and restaurant are all finished in light colored pine wood, giving rise to a very pleasing rustic ambiance. The restaurant was closed for dinner during our stay, but Inga drew a map of great detail, making sure we would not get lost finding the Italian restaurant Fellini she recommended in Spjelkavik, a nearby suburb. Breakfast served buffet style in the selection of items offered may have reflected the low pre-season occupancy of the hotel. Fruit would have been a worthwhile addition, nevertheless, the buffet contained all we needed to satisfy us. In summery, we greatly enjoyed our stay in room #209 and would stay at this hotel again at a future visit of Alesund.

I must admit that our first impression of this hotel -- quite literally in the ferry loading path -- was not terrific; we had to wait to enter the parking lot until the outgoing ferry had loaded (since the cars queueing up blocked it) and the hallways and public spaces are a bit hostel-like. The whole place has the air of a slightly-seedy beach house.

But the room! It was fabulous. Enormous bathrooms, couch and chairs, comfortable bed, huge windows, and sliding doors to the building-wide balcony. It was absolutely a surprise to find such a top-notch room. Everything was clean, in order, and very comfortable -- and about twice the size of rooms we've been recently staying in in Bergen. Possibly larger.

We were a bit worried about noise from the ferry, which is right outside the hotel, but we really didn't hear it much. The view from the balcony looks directly over the ferries, but you can see the fjord in he background and being able to sit outside for a bit was nice. There are room-darkening curtains on the wall of windows, but they only cover the bottom half, not the top A-frame part of the window, so the room was quite bright.

Huge television, free wifi, comfortable couch and table to work at. There is an elevator, but it's a slow one, The bed was comfortable, with very good firm pillows (which I'm beginning to realize is a rarity).

We never saw any staff except when checking in, but she was helpful and very nice. Note that he hotel is not IN Alesund -- the city is a good 20minutes away by car. It is, however, very convenient if you take the ferry!

My only real complaint was that breakfast was pretty dismal. We ate fairly early and a number of things were already gone and we never saw anyone to ask for a more orange juice, or saw them replenish anything on the table. Selection was very small, with no fruit or yogurt -- we've come to rely on a hearty breakfast at hotels in Norway, since it is the norm. I know they had a large group the night before, and I wondered if they'd rolled through before we came down. We arrived in time the night before to (theoretically) eat at the hotel restaurant, but were told that there was nothing left, so I am left to wonder if this is a larger problem.

But, the room was nice enough to offset any problems with food, and I'd recommend them heartily for a comfortable place to stay near Alesund.

Room Tip: Ask for the 2nd floor, to have a balcony

I loved this hotel from the second I walked in to the second I left. Sorry that I had to leave such comfort on the road. It was more like home away from home than a hotel. Privately owned and the owner can not do enough to help out.....giving extra food, detailed directions to wherever you want to go.....just about redefines the meaning of service with a smile...and all this for what in Norway is a reasonable price.
The place just can't be beat and it is right next to one of the ferries. Can't imagine staying here without a car but if you have a car or someone is shuttling u back and forth....don't even think of staying anywhere else...this place is a total gem....I'd drive an extra hour or so just to stay here....

Short overnight stay after flying from Oslo to Alesund. After tourist high-season and hotel wasn't full so got upgraded to top-3rd-floor fjord view. Very large, spacious, nicely furnished room with great view. Large bathroom designed for elderly/handicapped access (not needed for me). Very convenient to ferry. Just turn out of hotel parking lot and get in queue. Useful for drive south to Geiranger the next morning. Desk suggested an alternate route that was longer but ended up being a gorgeous drive along a smaller fjord and into the mountains.

I want to keep this place a secret, but need to tell travelers about its amazing location and lovely owner/manager, Inge. This isn't a fancy place, nor is it trendy. But, it is good-looking and near sightseeing (like the Geirangerfjord). The parking is free, breakfast is just fine, and you're about 20 minutes from downtown Alesund, a wonderful Art Nouveau city. We stayed 3 lovely nights, and couldn't have been happier.
