“A pleasant stay”
Reviewed 15 July 2013 via mobile

We were delighted by this hotel that we booked through booking.com. The nettbuss that we took from Andalsnes as part of the Norway in a Nutshell tour dropped us off directly at the door.

The hotel is very modern. Our room had two windows, one of which overlooked the water. There wasn't much to do on a rainy Sunday evening in Alesund, but we happily sat in our room. The bed was quite comfortable, and we both slept well. It pays to have a sleep mask as there were gaps in the curtains.

Breakfast was good. We would have liked the coffee machines that make lattes and hot chocolate that seem fairly standard at most Norwegian hotels. This one only had coffee or tea.

The location is good. It is a very short walk to the main part of Alesund, and only a 10-15 minute walk to the Hurtigruten. There is a grocery store along the way if you are looking to buy snacks.

The staff members were very friendly and all was very clean. We are somewhat disappointed to have booked another hotel for our return stay in Alesund instead of this one!

Dear H M,
Thank you very much for your nice and detailed review from your stay this summer!
The only thing I am sorry about, from reading your review, is that you got a rainy day when you stayed here; Ålesund is extremely beautiful when the sun is shining. It’s a pity you didn’t get to see the nature in sunlight.
We sincerely appreciate your respond and hope you will return one time to the Waterfront!

We booked a family room for the same price as a regular double. Room was clean, nice and really spacious. Nice large bathroom as well with both shower and bathtub. We only stayed the night and left after breakfast so didn't try any amenities. Breakfast was of good quality, except a really horrible orange juice....
Visited the hotel about 6 months ago and was really disappointed with the service level in the bar and restaurant, but hopefully they have improved since then.

Dear ElisaNorway,
Thank you very much for your review from your stay this summer.
From the description of the room, you seem to have been allocated into one of our junior suites, and these rooms are really spacious and with bathtubs.
Reading about your last experience, I can assure you that the level of service and quality, has improved in the bar & restaurant department, we are constantly getting positive feedback from our guests. We urge you to try our a la carte menu if you return to the hotel once.
Thank you again for the respond, and welcome back to the Waterfront!

Our room was in a really nice position on a corner, dual aspect with views across the water. The bed is good, each room has a nice big TV with some nice contemporary art above the bed. The reception staff were friendly and helpful.

In the restaurant the staff were friendly, but had too much to do. At dinner time we had to wait long periods while the two waitresses raced round the dining room and covered the bar while taking orders and clearing plates.

Our bathroom was a wet room, built in smoked glass forming a corner of the bedroom. It's nicely finished but the automatic light comes on when you go in then stays on for five minutes after you leave, so the whole thing glows in the room at night. I prefer good old fashioned switches. Also the flameless glass door is too small so does nothing to contain "bathroom sounds" or offer any form of privacy.

The breakfasts are good and offer the usual Norwegian selection plus bacon, eggs and beans. On our first night in the hotel we used their restaurant and had the buffet, it was 350Kr each and not really worth the money compared to much better restaurants in town. Anno was very good.

Room Tip: The best rooms are on the waterfront with views to the West. Anything should be OK really except for...

Dear tz1_1zt,
Thank you for the detailed review from your stay at our hotel this summer. I reckon you had a corner room in the Pakkhouse, one of the two old buildings in the hotel from 1905. This was originally a warehouse and you can still see the wooden beams in the corridors.
Your observation of the staff in the restaurant concerns me and it seems like they were short of staff this particular evening. This is not the way we want our guests to experience, and I am glad to hear that they were friendly despite the rush.
When it comes to the bathroom light, this is controlled by sensors as you quite correctly mention, and normally the light should go out after 3 minutes not 5.
Our breakfast is widely known in fact, and the buffet at evening time during summer, is quite simple and ordinary compared to the a la carte menu that is available as well. The buffet is more adapted to the tourist groups arriving every evening and eating on a low budget fare. We do have to have a variety of selection for every customer.
Again, thank you very much and welcome back to the Waterfront!

Nice looking Hotel with modern rooms. Ours was facing some kind of car and lorry parking, so nothing I'd call a view. But as it was on the first floor people walking past the hotel certainly had a good view into our room - of course there are curtains... The first noticable thing to happen was that we mistook the parking in front of the hotel for a good place to put our car while checking in. The 10 minutes this took us was enough for getting a ticket for wrong parking. We found that rather annoying but we got around the fine by immediately taking our car to the hotel parking which is 20.- Kroner per day.
The room itself was nice and modern with a milk-glass bathroom built into the room. The bathroom light switches on automatically when you enter it, movement sensor. So going to the Bathroom at night will bring light to the whole room for a few minutes until the light switches off again automatically. We had a double bed with a mattres that I think is a no-go. Whenever one of us moved at night the other one would wake up because of the springs causing the whole bed to tremble. I at least did not sleep well. There is free WiFi. The entry code changes daily and you have to obtain the code at the reception desk every day. The breakfast buffet is alright with plenty of choices. It was a bit crowded when we were there and the staff mistook us for participants of some travel group and tried to send us to some large tables that were reserved for that group. I know they can't know every face but it was annoying nevertheless. A better bed, better directions for guests with cars and power sockets on each side of the bed (only one side had one) would convince me to give this place a point more.

Dear Ribizzl,
Thank you very much for your detailed review from your stay at our hotel this summer. This is a very good way for us to make the right adjustments and improve. From what I can read, you were allocated a room in the old Pakkhus with glass wall bathrooms. We totally understand that guests could be annoyed by the sensors and light during the nightly visit to the toilet, but I would like to comment that the duration of light is 2-3 minutes, not 5. The parking spaces outside the hotel are only valid for 2 hours with a ticket visible, and I do agree that they were rather quick giving you a fine while you were checking in. Unfortunately, we do not “own” these spaces outside, for as much as we would like to, and I am glad to hear that you got around the fine. The parking garage around the corner is a good alternative and costs NOK 130 for 24 hours. Better directions to this garage could of course help arriving guests to avoid fines, but I know for a fact that there are several sign both outside and inside the hotel pointing this out. Your experience in the breakfast lounge is of course regrettable, but somehow not easy to avoid from time to time. We are sincerely sorry about this. When it comes to the beds in our rooms, I must admit that this is the first complaint in this matter. Normally, our guests are very comfortable and some even write to me to get the name of the manufacturer. But it has to be a first time for everything. We do have twin rooms with separate beds as an option, but this is not what you are asking for. Thank you again for your review, we do hope you will give us a second chance if you ever return to Ålesund.

Customer service was great, the hotel looks great, and nice location, with nice view from the room. It has big Mac's computers for guests to use for free - BIG plus!
On the down side, the room was not all that nice, dust in the corners, the mini bar was messy (not tidy), the soap in the bathroom did not hang on the wall as it was supposed to, and the 'make up' mirror was placed in the corner by the toilet and the shower, so it was difficult to use it. The window was built out of the room wall, which made it possible to see the sea, but it also made alot of noise when it was raining, not nice when you try to sleep. Also, the exercise room did not have 'all' the equipment the hotel says that it has, and the restaurant makes the lower level and 1st level smell of sea food...

But all in all, it was a good hotel - worth booking a stay here. =)

Dear LadyCeci,

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your review.
I am very happy to hear that you found our customer service great, and that you could enjoy a nice view from your hotel room. I am also glad you like the hotel's look and location - right in the middle of Ålesund's art noveau part of town.

On the other hand, I am sorry to hear that your room wasn't cleaned properly. Cleanliness is definitely a top priority of ours, and the way you experienced your room is not how we aim to present it.

As you mention, the window in your room is built out of the wall, and this is to give the best possible sea view to as many rooms as possible. I must admit that this is the first time I've heard about the rain making so much noise against the materials these bay windows are made of, so I suspect that it was raining very heavily. If you ever come back to Ålesund, and we're expecting heavy rain - please give us a head's up so we can offer you another room.

I will definitely look into the status regarding the gym equipment. When it comes to the sea-food smell on the lower and 1st floor, this is something we know can occur from time to time - and we're working on finding a solution to this issue.

Thanks again for your detailed review, and welcome back to the Waterfront!

Pluses: Rooms, bathrooms, restaurant, lobby, and everywhere else in the hotel is kept to a standard of immaculate cleanliness worthy of the Mayo Clinic Open Heart Surgery Room. FIVE computers for guests to check email for free. Delicious, highly diverse breakfast buffet included in room price. Room (I stayed in 237) blissfully quiet -- I never heard a single noise from another room, nor from the hall, nor from the elevators, nor from the street. Superbly helpful and courteous staff, all fluent in English (and I daresay many other languages besides Norwegian). Room of only moderate size by US standards, but seems more spacious due to the Scandinavian genius for efficient use of space. Hot water in shower is hot almost instantly -- no wasting water. Comfortable bed with firm mattress. Hotel can accommodate moderate-size business meetings. Location convenient (easy walking distance) to museums, bus station, grocery, bank, a beautiful historic church, and post office.
Small improvements I suggest: Window curtains have gaps -- and this time of year, there is little night! Guests can bring a couple of clothespins. Thermostat light too bright at night (I draped a piece of paper over it). The four (of the five) computers in the window by the front door are hard to use on sunny mornings (a sunscreen for the window).

Room Tip: Views are lovely -- lovelier on higher floors (5th is highest). No swimming pool -- ignore that rat...
