Owner description: Visit the open-air museum with its vast collection of old houses. Enjoy a stroll between the picturesque houses and the indoor exhibitions, and get an insight into the cultural and architectural history of Sunnmore. Sunnmore Museum is a beautiful open air museum with 55 old and distinct houses. While walking in between these houses you feel as if you are put back in time, and you will see how people lived in earlier times. On Wednesdays during summer, there are a lot of activities going on at the museum. In the main building the fascinating exhibitions on archaeology and culture in the Sunnmore region will provide you with a unique insight into the life of the people who have inhabited this area for several thousand years. Take a look at the museum's vast boat collection too, including replicas of Viking ships. The beautiful area surrounding the museum is also excellent for walks.

“Winter visit”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

The fact that we visited in March is the only thing that's preventing me from giving the Open Air Museum a top rating. Some of the exhibits were closed, and most of the boats were out of the water. But, it was still an interesting visit ... and the beautiful setting and conditions were ideal for some prize-winning (I hope!!) photography

“Bus from Alesund”
Reviewed 20 August 2013

We had enjoyed the Art Nouveau buildings of Alesund on a previous occasion so took this opportunity to visit an open air museum which is reached by a 15 minute bus ride from the town centre. Inside the reception area is a shop and refreshment hall together with a museum over three floors including lavish clothes on the top floor and a small printing exhibit including a Heidleburg machine similar to one which my late father used in his days as a compositor. Outside are over fifty examples of authentic historic wooden farmhouses and cowsheds, some of which are open, all centered round a pleasant lakeside walk. There is a fine boat hall which we did not have the time to look over but on the water is a thirties fishing boat, the Heland which was involved in the Second World War famous Shetland run. Plenty of children's activities involving handicrafts cutting out leather and making model boats. Clientele mainly Norwegian and keenly priced at 80kr each or even better 50kr for pensioners.

“interesting musuem with a range of exhibits”
Reviewed 1 June 2013

The Sunnmøre Museum near Ålesund is interesting in that it covers three topics: early boat building (including reconstructions of viking boats), buildings showing home/farm life in the 1600s->1900s, and a small museum showing cultural information from the Stone Age to more recent. They also had a small exhibit on printing presses; they have a few moveable type presses. A snack bar is available to give your feet a rest.

This is a good museum if (a) you are really into Viking boats, (b) have younger kids that need to expend a little energy. The setting is very pretty. Parking is confusing, you park out by the street and then walk in.
