“Very different place”

Beautiful place but not in the normal Norwegian way.
It was almost all burnt down on 1904 so has been rebuilt over the years in a very different fashion - most of it is now brick and stone in an art nouveau fashion.
Well worth a lazy stroll taking it all in.

It is definitely a different kind of town that you might expect travelling through Norway. The point is, unfortunately, that abandoning wooden architecture makes it compete directly with its Netherlands or Hanseatic counterparts - and to tell the truth, it is not a fair competition. Ultimately, distinct style saves the day.

Since Bergen, Geiranger etc. are all VERY touristic, we were pleased to see some non-tourists here.
Unfortunately we were done looking at the handful of nice houses after 2 hours. And bored ourselves out of the city as soon as we could.

Beautiful area for a stroll. Historically the are was known to be a calm harbour for unloading fish (mainly cod), and the foundations of the town was laid here. Today the area is in the heart of the town center and definitely worth a visit. Take a walk along the canal and the surround area for some nice art noveau arcitecture.

This Hotel is beautifully decorated and well appointed. It is located in the city centre and has parking nearby. We enjoyed the dinner they supply as part of your accommodation and the breakfast was great. The room we stayed in was very small, this was fine. I would like to suggest a small bedside shelf for the side of the bed without a table. Also noise from room above was not great. The staff were friendly and the rooms were clean. Highly recommend.
