A well-maintained staircase leads from the city park up the hill to views over Alesund and the neighboring region. If you are on a cruise, simply head through the town to the base of the nearby hill, where you will find a lovely city park. In the park, there is a statue (see photo) and he appears to be pointing to the start of the path to the stairs. There are 418 steps to the top and the climb was not too vigorous; there are plenty of opportunities to stop, sit, look at the views.
If it is wet, wear suitable shoes so you don't slip where the stairs are just carved stone. Just don't miss the opportunity to look over this lovely town and the surrounding area. Like much of Norway, it is just fabulous.
Tip: at the top, there is a restaurant and souvenir shop; they want 10 kroner (about $1.75 U.S.) from "customers only" just to walk out on the balcony for a view. Better to just head up the path of the hill a little ways where you can see across just fine.
