“Beautiful Alesund, Norway”
Reviewed 20 May 2011

Alesund on the west coast of Norway is a small town, quiet, peaceful and incredibly beautiful. It is to me a cross between Switzerland and Venice. The weather was great barring for some rains but a walk along the streets and the canal was simply out of this world. The flowers all around and the quiet atmosphere made this a most relaxing visit. You can just spend you whole day walking and taking in the sights if you just want to relax. The attached pictures will give you a glimpse of what you can expect. I recommend that you stay at the boutique hotel Brosundet next to the canal, made of logs and so lovely. The various islands in this area are connected by undersea tunnels which makes every drive a experience.

“Art nouveau town in the Norwegian fjords”
Reviewed 2 December 2008

The old town of Ålesund was destroyed by fire in the early years of the 20th century. Substantial international aid flowed in, including large amounts from Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, hwo used to take holidays in Ålesund. This allowed for the town to be rebuilt in the best modern style of the time.

Hence we find almost an entire art nouveau centre to a fjord town.

“My hometown - Ålesund”
Reviewed 29 November 2007

OK, so this is a very patriotic review...but most people from Ålesund are really patriotic! Ålesund is a small fishingtown on the west coast
of Norway. If you can't stand some rain and wind, Ålesund may not be the place for you... However, if you like nature, mountains, fjords, clear water and salty air because of the sea everywhere you turn, Ålesund may be just what you're looking for!

You should not go here to shop or anything like that - in Ålesund, like in every other city in Norway, things are expensive. If, on the other hand, you like skiing, slalom, walks in the mountains, nature-photography, fishing, diving, swimming, seeing wild animals - Ålesund
is the place to go. If you're an outdoor-person, you can spend weeks in the mountains surrounding this little town. It also has a big aqurium with fish and other creatures that live in the Atlantic Ocean,
and the town's center is worth a visit since most of the houses are built in the "Jugendstil" or "Art Nouveau"-style after the great fire in 1904 which destroyed the town of about 47000 inhabitants.
