“A good hotel”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

I stayed at this hotel for three nights in March, during the National Championships in volleyball for 15-year-olds. Because of the nationals, the staff had quite a hectical time, with hundreds of children from all over the country. In my opinion, they coped with their many guests in a very good way.

The room I stayed in was quite big, with a spectacular view from the 16th floor. Totally, there were over 20 floors, and the breakfast was eaten on the top floor. The view was fantastic and the food was good.

The hotel even had an elevator on the outside of the building, and I found it pretty exciting using it. However, this elevator is not for people who are scared of heights. A minor disadvantage was that the hotel only had three elevators. Combined with it's many floors which made it unpractical to use the stairs, this caused many waits for the elevator. The many guests made it even harder, and during breakfast time it was impossible using the crowded elevators.

Anyway, the location of the hotel was perfect. After arriving the airport, I bought tickets for the bus, and it stopped only 200 meters from the hotel. The hotel was also located next to the Stavanger Idrettshall, where the nationals were hold. Many big sports events take place here and I recommend Rica Forum Hotel if you are going to one of them.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your positive review about your stay with us.

Even though we now have 3 elevators (new elevator opened spring 2014) it is still a challenge for us in the busy periods when over 200+ people all want to eat breakfast or check out at the same time. This is unfortunately something that will always be a problem, but we can understand it can be frustrating waiting for an elevator.

We hope to see you again in the near future when/if you return to Stavanger.

Kind regards,
Marc Dudley

This is an impressive glass skyscraper on the edge of town, which seems to be following a modern trend of spending a fortune on the buildings whilst not investing in enough staff to provide adequate service for its guests.

Our group was dismissed from the dining room early because the manager wanted to go home! The bar was closed at 9.30pm,, so we couldn't get a drink unless we helped ourselves to a poor selection soft drinks and beers in a bin in reception. There appears to be no Residents' Lounge, only a very small seating area to one corner of reception, which is totally inadequate.

We reported the shower gel in the bathroom dispenser had run out on arrival, but this was not replenished in 2 days. Then, to cap it all, we had to change rooms mid-stay due to a blocked toilet because there was no-one on hand to sort out the problem. The room we ended up with was smaller and far inferior to the one we had booked

A hotel of this size really should be able offer at least decent, if not exceptional service, but it could manage neither during our stay - most disappointing.

Room Tip: Odd numbered rooms have a nicer outlook

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay with us. I would also like to say how deeply sorry I am for your disappointing stay with us.

All I can understand is that it must have been a Sunday that your group was turned away at 21:30, as the VJU restaurant and bar opening times on Sunday are 18:00-21:00. All other days the opening times are 17:00-00:00 (kitchen/food orders closes at 22:00). I would still like to apologize if the way you were told to leave was inappropriate, but he/she could have asked you to re-locate to the second floor which also has a large seating area, and the possibility to order drinks from the lobby bar on the first floor (or asked somebody at the front desk to come up the the 2nd floor and take your orders). Here we have 15 different bottled beers, the hotels red and white wine + various soft drinks, so it may not be as good as a fully functional bar, but I am sure there is something for everybody here. All in all though, are service in this situation has not been at the required level for what we and you expect, so I apologize for this.

As for the soap dispenser not being re-filled all I can assume it being is due to us waiting for a delivery for the required items or a miss communication between the staff. This is of course no excuse, and we do tend to deliver small soap bars if the dispenser is empty and if this was not done, then I again apologize for this.

The changing of rooms I am not sure either what has happened, as we don’t tend to downgrade people for a mistake we have made, we sometimes even have the upgrade people if there is no standard rooms left.

If you do return to Stavanger in the future, please get in touch with me and we can give you compensation (either room type or price reduction) as an apology for your disappointing stay with us. We would like to show that we do value service at this hotel very highly and would like to redeem ourselves.

I again truly apologize for you stay not being at the required standards which we and you come to expect at hotels of this standard. Please do get in touch with me at the hotel marc.dudley@rica.no and let us know in more detail what happened (i.e. your name and the days your stayed), and I will investigate further.

Best regards,
Marc Dudley

I have stayed at this hotel a few times before. Before it was a lot of queuing in the elevator at breakfast times. This has changed now that the hotel has got a nice new exterior elevator. Another time I forgot tooth brush at home, when I went into receptionis to hear about the selling toothbrush. Then they gave me a free toothbrush, it was nice to not have to run to the store to buy one when you're on you way to bed. Great service. Still, I must say that it is an experience to eat breakfast on the 21st floor. (Nice view). I will return here on another occasion, that's for sure.

Room Tip: The higher up, the more views.

Hello Helge,

Thank you for your positive review about your stay with us.

We are also very happy to have a new elevator in place, as this does speed up the waiting time during the busy periods.

We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

In its favour:
Views are impressive
Great breakfast served from early in the morning
Friendly staff
Comfortable beds
Near a shop and bus stops

Against:
Smelly bathroom (seemed to be a drain issue)
Stains on the furniture and light fitting
Download speeds on the internet were very variable
Not that near the town centre though near the lake
No safe in the room
No coffee facilities in the room (available at reception)
Free bike available but the one bike had no breaks or working gears

Was adequate for what I needed, breakfast on the 21st floor was the highlight.

Room Tip: The higher up the better. Try and get a room away from the road as it is a bit quieter if you sleep...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for writing a review on Tripadvisor about your stay at our hotel.

We are glad you enjoyed the views and the breakfast served on the top floor. This is one of the highlights at Rica Forum Hotel, and is something we often hear from our guests. I am also glad to hear that your bed was comfortable and that the staff were friendly, as this is two things that are very important for guests when booking a room. A good nights sleep is a must, and a high level of service is very important to give our guests the quality and value from which they come to expect at any hotel.

As for the "againsts" then this is something we need to look into. The smelly bathroom is something that is totally unaccetable, and we must make sure this does not happen again. We have been checking our bathrooms more frequently now and we are pleased to say that there does not seem to be a major issue with our draining system. We will however continue to check up on this to make sure it doesn't become an issue in the future.

As we are changing to a new hotel-chain (from Rica to Scandic) we are going to give the hotel a slight "makeover" meaning most of the rooms will be getting brand new furniture. Some of the rooms need this makeover, so we are looking forward to getting started with this prosess. The internet is also going to be looked at during the summer, and will we hopefully be able to provide a better service for the entire hotel, as some places seem to be under the required quality we expect.

Our standard rooms don't have coffee facilites, which is the case with many hotels in Norway, but as you said, if you require this we can provide this if we have any available. No safe in the room is also something that is more frequent in norwegian hotels, but we can lock away things in our safe at the front desk if this is required.

We usually have four bikes available, but currently we are getting these fixed as they have often been having problems with the breaks and gears. We expect to have them "fit for fight" again very shortly.

I hope to see you back at our hotel in the near future and if you have any further issues, please feel free to get in touch.

Best regards,
Marc Dudley

The basic rooms in this hotel are nothing special and quite small. However if you can get the room from the higher floors the views are excellent.
The breakfast is also served on the top floor of the hotel so watching the sunrisee while you are enjoying and excellent buffet breakfast is defenetly going to give a great start for the working day.
The staff is also very friendly and eventhough the menu at the hotel restaurant is quite limited the choices that I tried where good.
Hotel does not have any fittness center but running the stairs up to the top will surely do for a good exercise.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to recommend our hotel on tripadvisor.

Our standard rooms are like you say of a basic nature, and is what the standard for most standard rooms across hotels in Norway is. For people staying one or two nights and who will only be using the room for a few hours during the night before they sleep, then this is usually not a problem. We do recommend people who will stay for a long time at our hotel to try our junior suites which can feel like a smallish flat and they are also the best “rooms with a view” at the hotel. However, like you said, the higher up the rooms the better the view.

We are also glad you enjoyed the breakfast with the sunrise from the 21st floor, and yes we agree 100% that it is a wonderful way to start the day.

It is also pleasing to hear that the staff was very friendly and that the food was good. The new summer menu does have more main course choices, so hopefully this will be something you will enjoy if/when you return to our hotel.

I look forward to welcoming you back to Stavanger and Rica Forum Hotel in the near future.

Best regards,
Marc Dudley

Dear Øyvind,
Thank you for recommending our hotel on tripadvisor.

I am glad you enjoyed our breakfast buffet and feel it is one of the best in Norway. That pleases all of us at the hotel and your experience is what we strive to achieve every morning when serving breakfast to our hungry hotel customers.

Our location is also perfect, as all meeting places in Stavanger and the Airport are a maximum 10-15 minutes away by car. It is also only 5 minutes to the city centre by car or bus, so not far away for those feeling the need to make a quick trip to the city centre.

I look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel during your next visit to Stavanger.

Best Regards,
Marc Dudley

Hotel located next to beautiful lake Mosvann in the "Forum-area", with conference-centres, multipurpose arenas and sports-facilities nearby. Friendly staff and a truly great breakfast buffet. Lunch menu a bit limited, and no possibilities for meals and eating outside opening hours in the restaurant unless you want to order take away to the hotel. Somewhat small rooms. Great panoramic view from the bar/restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms facing east are less exposed to traffic noise.

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on tripadvisor.

I am glad you liked our hotel, and that the service from the staff meet your expectations.

We are also very lucky to have a great location, especially for those wanting to host a big conference or for sports teams playing at the nearby arenas. This is why most of our guests fall under these categories, but with the fantastic views and peaceful surrounding area, it is also a favorite for many business people just wanting to escape the city center and relax after busy days at the office or a meeting/conference.

Once again, thank you for recommending our hotel and I look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Best regards,
