I met no one else in this place, so without the pub next door I would never have dared to go into the abandoned public rooms and up the 3 flights of very smelly stairs. It was just too creepy and slummy, and had an abandoned warehouse-feel to it. There was a ramshackle "handicap-elevator" hidden in a corner, you had to keep your hand on the button to keep it going, while it screeched and creaked, and sl-ow-lly jerked upwards. It was really frightening being (probably) all alone in the building, especially as everything else was so shabby and broken down. Although once was enough with the elevator, I had a suitcase to bring down the last day, but then the elevator creaked to a halt and gave up between two floors, luckily on the way up to me. There were barrels of beer and other stuff stored in the stairwell, and It was all very unappetizing. The room was tiny and shabby, the bedlamp didn't work, and there was a sign saying that the fire alarm would start if shower damp was allowed into the room. If it had been cheap I would have understood the deal and kept away, but I was charged 995 NOK per night. MY MAIN POINT IS: THE HOMEPAGE GIVES A WRONG IMPRESSION OF THIS PLACE - THIS IS NOT A HOTEL. (Breakfast was served at the Victoria hotel next door, which is also where I paid the bill. When I commented on the homepage versus the real experience I was told that this was a two-star hotel. Two stars? Never in a million years.)

You should probably stay here for two reasons: Price and location. It is less expensive than the other choices I found in the downtown Stavanger area. Rooms are spartan and staff almost non-existent. I can see why other reviewers compared this to a hostel. You check in, eat breakfast (a good breakfast), and check out at the Victoria Hotel next door. My room did not get cleaned one day. There is no wardrobe or dresser for clothing - only a few hooks on the wall, so even as a solo traveler I was living out of my bag. I could not see evidence of a recent renovation but at least it was not that run down. The hallways are somewhat of a maze, and the elevator does not support every floor, so I had to drag my suitcase up several flights of stairs. This area of Stavanger has a lot of traffic, and most windows face a narrow street and another building - the noise level may be too high for light sleepers, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. That said, the room was clean, not spacious but not cramped, the bed comfortable, and the location ideal for me, as I planned to tour the city on foot. The airport shuttle bus stop is at the harbor about 100 meters away. If you want to save some money and you don't need pampering, then the Skansen is a reasonable option.

I have stayed in Skansen Hotel between 28th May 2011, Sunday and 2nd June, Thursday. It provides the basic amenities. So, if your aim is to find somewhere to sleep only, it is a good place for money. The wireless internet works very smoothly and I believe it is something good. The roadworks were about to finish when I was there. When it is rainy you do not have much noise coming from the bar, which was located literally next to my room. You should not expect things like room service, minibar etc. in this hotel.

If a few dollars makes a difference n your life, then book it, but I suggest Hotel Victoria instead. It is next door, but so much better. "Hotel" Skansen doesn't have reception (you check in at Victoria), doesn't have any amenities except for a bar (breakfast is served in Victoria). As a student I have been in nicer hostels than this. It does seem clean enough, but I would avoid it.

I'd really recommend. The room is basic(ish) but has everything you'd need, including a really good shower. The hotel is well located for nightlife, but very wuiet (at least when I was there over a weekend).

Most importantly, its the closest the twon has to offer to a reasonably priced hotel (that I could find), and it has a truly excellent breakfast buffet.

We arrived in an area where a road was being demolished including heavy machinery and pneumatic drills which went from 6.45am to 6.30pm right outside our bedroom window. The bedroom has multiple holes in the walls, nowhere to store your clothes and the bathroom lacks any hanging space.

The breakfast was served in the hotel next door and was satisfactory. Asking the staff for alternate room or an upgrade we were told was not possible.

Would recommend this hotel service and help from reception is excellent, second to none staff really go out of there way to help, rooms are very clean although a bit on the all side, breakfast included in price which is very reasonable considering it's Norway, location is perfect 800meter walk from train station and central to everything one could want, the only downside is the road out front is a bit noisy AND there is a nightclub across the road which is open till 3am Friday & Saturday nights, very hard to sleep with the subwoofers pounding through the building, recomended hotel but avoid on the abovementioned nights if one plans on sleeping at a decent hour.
