Myhregaarden Hotel
Ranked #13 of 27 Hotels in Stavanger
Reviewed 6 June 2011

The hotel’s website suggests that this is an impressive, high quality, mix of classical and contemporary styles, aspiring to be a boutique option in Stavanger. Sadly, it didn’t fulfil this promise and, although my stay was pleasant, I felt that I’d received a discount version of the website promise, maybe to reflect the good discount I’d obtained when booking through Expedia.

The hotel’s location is good – right on the edge of the pedestrianized shopping streets full of small shops, galleries and cafes and ten minutes from the cathedral and harbour. Stavanger is a great weekend break location.

The reception and lobby are somewhat small. I was given a small single-bedded room. Judging by the floor plan, it was the smallest room on the floor and lacked the spacious impressions of the website. The narrow single bed was comfortable and there was a desk, minibar and tv (no English language channels apart from the God Channel!). There was a kettle and tea/coffee but, oddly, no sugar. Most annoying, there was just one coat hook plus three plastic hangers on it – no other cupboard, drawer or shelving space for clothes at all Another hook was missing. The bathroom was modern and smart with Bjorn Borg toiletries – but no tissues and no face cloth. Free wifi is available, although is slightly erratic. The door lock/card were a bit temperamental.

Breakfast was of good quality with a fairly wide range – meatballs, fried eggs, cereals, cold meats, bread, fruit, etc. Hot soup was available between 6pm and 8pm on weekdays only, although when I went at 7pm, both soup and coffee had all gone. There is no other evening food offering which, again, isn’t quite clear from the website.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

We arrived in Stavanger in time for a rock music festival, so it was packed with people and competing guitars and amps. The hotel is a bit hard to find -- the entryway is tucked in next to a bakery and is really just a long hallway with a desk and elevator. Very sparse. But desk staff was friendly and efficient and we checked into a business double room on the 4th floor facing the street.

Lovely room -- very small, as is usual, but with a desk and chair and small open closet. Another upholstered chair was tucked in next to the fireplace. The bathroom was well appointed, with a small shower tucked in the corner. The heated towel rack effectively heats the whole bathroom, which is nice. The decor is very modern and stylish -- lots of black and purple and crisp white paint.. The halls are decorated with then-and-now photographs of Stavanger.

While we had large windows that opened entirely, they faced the street, which left us with a lot of road noise and general crowd noise until the festival folded up its tents. If you are a light sleeper, this could be a problem. The heavy blinds, though, were a welcome relief from the summer night brightness.

The bed is probably the most comfortable hotel bed I've slept in for a very long time. Excellent bed! Good choice of pillows (including a non-feather/non-down pillow that was actually firm enough to use without folding it in half).

Breakfast is served downstairs in the attached restaurant -- lots of options, including a number of hot dishes and various fruits. One of the nicer breakfast offerings we've seen in the last few weeks in Scandinavia. There is an electric kettle and tea/instant coffee in the room, as well as a stocked mini-bar and snack basket. Expensive, obviously, but the choices are quite good if you like that sort of thing.

Parking is hard to come by in Stavanger, and the hotel has no associated parking; there is a parking ramp only a block a way that is reasonable and easy to haul luggage from. After hours, I think it would be possible to pull a car up in front to unload.

A good value, an efficient and comfortable room and bathroom, and a really, really comfortable bed -- worth it in my book. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Avoid the busy street-side rooms

Given all of the good reviews for this hotel, I think mine is the exception to the rule. I was put in a very small room on the top floor, with an angled ceiling that made only half of the room useable. The bed, though very comfortable, was barely big enough for one person. Only half of the cable tv channels worked, and for several hours one day the cable, internet, and phone were down. The breakfast was standard, with limited selection compared to other hotels in Stavanger. The front-desk staff were friendly but often not at the desk for some reason. And most importantly, the street noise from my room was unbearable, and pretty much ruined any chance of a good sleep. If you are a light sleeper, refuse the street facing rooms! And if there are other good hotels available, spend your 1500+ NOK per night somewhere else.

Newly made over with smart clean rooms.

Rooms very small, and shower room (no bath) miniscule, have to stand in shower to shave.

Minimal service, with no communal siting room. Small dining room, with probably best cooked breakfast in a Stavanger hotel.

Good central location, but street a bit concrete, and quite noisy with buses/street cleaners etc in the morning

This is a traditional city centre hotel in an older building. However it has recently been refurbished with modern fittings and is a comfortable place for a short stay in the city.

We arrived very tired at 7.30pm on a Saturday evening hoping to eat in the restaurant on arrival. Unfortunately the restaurant is closed on weekend evenings, but in practice this proved not to be a problem in view of the number of restaurants nearby in the city. Indeed the atmosphere in the city at a weekend probably means that no-one would use the hotel restaurant unless they were too tired to go out and everything is within easy reach of the hotel!

The rooms are fine and it was a joy to find complimentary tea and coffee making facilities in the room, and the free room wifi was easy to set up and use. We felt that the modern fittings had been very tastefully incorporated into the older style building. A previous guest had damaged one of the window fittings of which the management was not aware, and which we reported to reception. This was not a problem and was not the fault of the hotel, but they were unable to repair it during our stay as we were only there over a weekend. There was some noise from outside late at night, but I suspect that this would have been the case in any hotel in Stavanger!

The range of options in the breakfast buffet was not as extensive as at some of the larger hotels we stayed at, but the food was well prepared and there were good hot and cold dishes which enabled a filling breakfast of any type to be enjoyed.

The staff were mainly friendly and helpful although some of the cleaning and waiting staff for whatever reason did not seem to want to acknowledge the guests. Maybe they were just shy.

Nevertheless our 2 night stay was enjoyable and we would not hesitate to stay again or to recommend the hotel to others.
