My husband and I had booked to stay at Mai Samui from 26th - 3rd May after having read some amazing reviews. Unfortunately we left on day three.
We arrived at the hotel and were very pleased with what we saw. The hotel really is very clean and set out really well. We were greeted by a well spoken young man at the reception who explained the basic hotel amentities to us. We were then shown to our private pool villa which was lovely. Shortly after arrival we noticed a trail of ants on the wall near the front door and slowly realised there were a few ants on the bed and also in the bed. There was obviously an ants nest nearby and they were getting into the room. We were offered a deep clean of the room however we knew this would not get rid of the problem however we gave it a shot. Nonetheless ten minutes after the deep clean the ants had returned. My husband had asked that the gap near the window where they were entering from be blocked off however it was not. Anyhow, we then got moved to another pool villa room and spent one night there. On the second evening we noticed baby cockroaches falling from the roof onto our bed. There was clearly eggs hatching in the wooden roof and falling onto the bed. Within ten minutes our bed was covered in about 30 baby cockraoches. Upon notifying the hotel staff we were told they do not bite.
During these incidents not once did the hotel manager approach us. We were then moved to a pool access villa with access only to the kids pool which was no more than 3 foot deep. None of the staff actually seemed to understand why we were upset that we had been moved to a pool access when we had paid for a pool villa. It was only once we phoned our agent in the UK and informed him that we wanted to move hotel was it that the manager paid us a visit to apologise. He then offered us compensation by way of a couples massage or a free dinner even though we had gone all inclusive.
The staff speak very little English and it is extremely difficult to communicate your needs with 80 percent of the staff. It is not true that this is the norm in Thailand as we did not have this issue in the second hotel.
The spa was amazing and out of our four treatments we had in Thailand our experience in Mai Samui was the best.
The positives were that the food really is fantastic even though the fine dining Sala is not fine dining as you would expect.
I think we got unlucky with the bugs to be fair as I have not read anything like this in previous reviews but the way it was all dealt with was extremely disappointing and not what you would expect from a five star hotel.
Breakfast is quite minimalistic and compared to our second hotel there were flies everywhere. There was also a lot more mosquitoes and bugs flying around. I really do not think the fumigation is done properly.
