We have visited the parque many times over the last 7 years, and have witnessed its decline, this year we were told things were improving, I did not notice many improvements, it was very disappointing in Spikes bar, to find tables and chairs that would be better suited in an icecream parlour, leather settees that were very uncomfortable and pushed into the fireplace area, and most of all the outdated photgraphs of footballers etc now passed their sell buy date still adorning the walls, let the past be gone and move on.Get photographs of the fab greens and views, or shots of up to date competitions, but leave the past where it belongs.

We just stayed in one of the James Villas and didn't use much else the resort had to offer, although the golf course looked fine as did the communal pool and bars.
The Villa was situated in a quiet location (took 2 days before we saw anyone else) within the resort and is perfect if all you wish to do is laze by the pool and enjoy a beer or glass of wine on the terrace. I would recommend this to anyone who would be staying as part of a group and are quite happy to make their own entertainment. The nearest shop is a 5-10min drive away and has a good enough selection of food and drink for most.
The Villa kitchen was well equipped (gas hob, microwave, fridge, small freezer, dishwasher), the lounge had satellite tv if you do want to watch anything and all the rooms had decent air-con.
The pool was great and we didn't need it to be heated.
Just what we all needed, a chilled week away.

Have just returned from a lovely holiday in Villa 59 in the main Phase I/II part of the resort, booked through Owners Direct. This a 3 bed property with lower level bedrooms and spacious lounge / dining area with comparatively large pool and views across to the sea. Kitchen is a little small but well equipped. After about 6 visits to PdF we can confirm that, contrary to one reviewers comments, the villas are not at all the same - designs and furnishings vary considerably and some of the older properties have been refurbished.

We understand the original developers are in liquidation but new owners are clearly starting to invest in the golf course and communal areas. The course was in much better condition this year and the main spa pool has a complete set of new loungers/umbrellas.

Charges have been reintroduced for villa occupants who choose to use the communal (10 euros per day) but it remains free to those in the town houses for whom it was built, so it's not so crowded. The Spike Bar has been refurbished and extended to include sofas, pool table etc, and continues to be a popular meeting spot the teenagers to socialise jn the evenings. We had take-away pizzas from the Italian by the main entrance a couple of times and they were excellent.

The western Algarve benefits from a wonderful combination of high temperatures and decent sea breezes, especially in the evenings - admittedly the wind can get a bit much on the resort sometimes, especially if you're in one of the highest, exposed properties - but many have some shelter, especially in the BBQ areas, and you still rarely need more than a light cardigan out and about jn the evenings.
We love this area and, contrary to some reviewers, we always find lots to do - albeit that a car is essential. On the resort itself, attendance at the kids clubs varies, but the tennis courts are always popular and the kids football sessions. There's a bowls club on site, with really welcoming owners, where you can get an excellent English breakfast, coffee, sandwich lunch, or try your hand at the game. They also hold a weekly quiz evening, which is great fun. Kids and adults can try out scuba diving in the main pool with an excellent local coach (Cris) who visits on Wednesdays, and then go on to learn properly in the sea if they wish.
Even without going further than Lagos (20 mins east) and Sagres (20 mins west), you can go blokarting, learn to surf, water ski, hire cycles or take a jeep ride out into the countryside. There are loads of excellent restaurants of various types in the surrounding villages and by the sea, various beaches - either little quiet ones or slightly higher ones with pedaloes and donut rides - boat trips from Lagos and Sagres to fish (mackerel or deep sea), see dolphins, view the grottoes. or go on a sailing boat.

If you're happy to drove a little further good days out include: a trip into the mountains for fantastic views and lunch at the spa town of Monchique; Zoo Marine or one of the water parks with the children; the new Autodrome where children and adults can go carting; the surf beaches up the west coast; or the waterside at one of other coastal towns. All about 45mins / 1 hr away.

Room Tip: Rent from one of the sites where you get photos of the precise villa you're getting or direct from owners. Don't rent from the management company as they share the rentals around and won't tell you in advance: you may not get the best property/location. Exchange e-mails with the owners for extra information, eg. precise location of villa, exposure to wind etc. and use satellite view in google maps.

We stayed in one of the large villas, not sure which phase but numbered in the 150s. Very similar to many european golf resorts we enjoyed the villa and the complex but you need a car to visit the beaches and local restaurants. We preferred to go into Salema and Burgau in the evenings where there are many good restaurants and a few nice beaches but our favourite beach was at Martinhal 15 minutes drive towards Sagres. The gym at the resort needs considerable investment and the golf course whilst in reasonable condition is very difficult due to the terrain and the very strong winds. The local supermarket at Budens is adequate but there is much bigger one in Lagos. Having travelled to this part of the Algarve for many years i really noticed how downmarket Lagos has become compared some of the local villages closer to where we stayed. Asking for 10 euros each to use the resport pool and 8 euros for each gym visit soon mounts up and i am not sure where the money goes as both areas need improving. All in all the villa was fantastic but as others have said the resort needs a bit of love and attention but the surrounding towns ensured that we had a great holiday.

We booked our trip thro'James Villas. We were a party of 5 age range 3 to 73. Our villa was in Quinta da Encosta Velha... part of the golf resort but not close to the pool/restaurant/gym area. In fact a car was required to reach these parts of the complex. Initially we were in villa 82.. a tall narrow town house on 3 levels inside plus an upstairs terrace. On our first morning random workmen started climbing ladders and appearing without warning on the balcony and terrace! The whole park was clearly undergoing some sprucing up before the season got underway fully. We were not happy with this state of affairs at all and later in the day Carlos... one of the 'main men' offered us the chance to upgrade and move at no extra charge. This we did and went into villa no 139. We were pleased to move and the villa was very pleasant but had clearly not had anyone in it for months. It was in need of some work particularly outside but it was cosmetic really. So thanks to Carlos we ended up in a villa with a pool and a garden overlooking the golf course. Happy hols! The resort itself was very quiet and we can only assume a combination of time of year and economic pressures is making things difficult here. We would certainly return to the Algarve.. it is stunningly beautiful but I don't think we would return to this particular resort. We are of the opinion that James Villas gave an extremely rose tinted description of what we might expect in terms of accomodation and location. For example, had we known that the villa we had originally booked was on 4 floors we would not have booked it!! Hard going for a 3 year old! To reach any of the main resort facilities you need to drive out of QEV, along the main road and into Parque da Floresta main entrance and then follow the road for another kilometre. Another reviewer has remarked on the state of the facilities and sadly I concur. Pool bar staff were charming by the way!
