I booked through a church group and was told it was good value, clean and the owners a couple were fantastic. But it has recently changed hands and was awful. We were charged more than quoted when it was booked. The room said"sea view" but this was only possible by standing next to the window. The single room was a partitioned part of a bigger room. The bed had blankets and sheets!!! No duvet. The bed was like sleeping on the floor it was so hard and cheap, and old. The shower soap dish was disgusting. Also it was cold in the room.Basically it all needs updating desperately. I would not recommend this hotel at all. I could not sleep and at 5am the rooms above me i could hear thumping on the floor! When I complained i had not slept and had to find alternate accomodation i was told to pay for the next night as this was their policy, so i did. Then later giving in my key was told i should pay for all 3 nights..which i refused to do! It could have ruined my bank holiday weekend. Other members of the party commented that the double bed they had was so old that they rolled into each other!
A bad experience, Fawlty towers but worse. I found another modern hotel nearby which was as what i expect from a hotel.

I organised a group holiday for 43 senior citizens at this hotel. and we stayed from 15 to 19 April 2013. We received a very warm welcome with tea and cake while our cases were taken to our rooms. Everyone of our party was fully satisfied with their accomodation and the cleanliness of their rooms and the hotel in general. I have never stayed in a hotel of any grade to beat the cleanliness of this hotel. It was outstanding. The staff were friendly and welcoming and could not do enough for us. The Manager, Winston, went out of his way to ensure we had everything we wanted in ensuring all our needs were meat. We had 2 nights of entertainment both being good with one in particular, outstanding. The food was served piping hot on hot plates with vegetables served separately and rolls at evening meals were always served hot. The standard of the food was good and well cooked and those with bigger appitites were always given larger portions. Our group travels on short break holidays 3 times every year and has done so for the past 13 years. We were all agreed that The Alexandra was, for value, cleanliness and warmth of staff, the best hotel we have stayed at. The hotle is particularly suited to seniors and any going as individuals or as a group can be assurred of a pleasant stay. I would have no hesitation in using this hotel again on future visits to the area..

Room Tip: Hotel has a lot of sea view rooms and these are obviously the ones to go for, if available. Some ro...

The Alexandra Hotel under new management offers excellent value for money. Staff extremely thoughtful and friendly, would go the extra mile. The pace suit guests needing a relaxing and gentile holiday. Perfect town position overlooking directly onto the calm seafront, not too close to the noisy Eastbourne Pier but near to the Wishing Tower and Museum end. Few minutes walk from the Congress Theatre and the Towner Exhibition centre. Views towards Eastbourne Bandstand with diverse shows. Well cooked food served by cheerful staff and clean, warm, comfortable accommodation. The hotel's lounge(cosy chairs to curl up in, read & drift of) and dining room reflects its charming Victorian past(the lift is an antique like England's red phone boxes), high ceilings of Victorian proportions and architecture. Night entertainment in the bar was hilarious and nostalgic! Parking was made easy by the hotel owner who strife to help us as my husband is disable. The guests seem happy, we found out that a couple from Wales got married in Eastbourne, held a reception for their family at the hotel and stayed on for a further week as they were so happy and satisfied with the hotel's excellent service. Finding lunch was not a problem as there are some great restaurants nearby.

Room Tip: Book a room with a seaview

Grand view of the beach from my cramped top-floor garret (sea view single bedroom with en-suite shower/wc) but the hotel features a clanking, possibly steam-driven elevator lift. The size of a telephone booth, for the past hundred years it hasn't responded to requests from people outside, while in motion. You must repeatedly press a button in hopes that one of the button presses catches it when stationary, said the hotel manager as he guided me into the tiny bird-cage.

In the morning it would have been quicker to walk, but I pulled open an ancient wooden door to ride the contraption down to the ground floor. A few other guests trickled into the dining room and sat at various tables. The hotel manager suddenly appeared. "No, no, we're not ready yet" "But I thought breakfast is at 8.15 ..." began the female half of an elderly couple by the window. "Yes, it is, but not this morning, the washer-up man hasn't turned up. We're not ready, that's why the dining room door is closed ..." he gestured wearily at the entrance we had used. The Bazil Fawlty manager then rounded on the difficult pair instructing them to move to another table as the one they occupied is reserved for another guest who is staying a whole week and therefore deserved a table with an outside view. To prove his point he drew the couple's attention to a small piece of paper in front of them which spelled out the reserved guest's name. Overhearing this I put on reading glasses and could see a piece of paper on my table which indicated it wasn't my spot. While the manager lead the pair away, I stood up and went in search of my name tag ... and found it on a table suitably far from all windows. The hotel manager continued to provide breakfast entertainment repeating "Look, see, here!" as he directed late arrivals to their appointed knife and fork. His Union Jack tie (to celebrate English success at the London Olympics) showed he is a good sport as well as good fun.

We stayed at the Alexandra hotel as a base for some South Downs walking. Considering what we paid for a sea front hotel, I thought it was reasonably good value. The room was very "tired" but clean and the shower was hot and there was a TV and some tea and coffee. The location is very good and although there isn't a car park, cheap roadside parking is available. In common with several reviewers, we found the breakfast one of the smallest we've seen anywhere in Britain. Cereals were served in the bowls, (I felt because the manager didn't want us having too much.) The "Full House" was served on a tea plate (more like a Full Doll's House!), one of everything, including the smallest egg I've ever seen. plus a few beans and half a slice of fried bread. Admittedly, we didn't ask for more, maybe we could have. That said, what we had was well cooked. Shame really because a bigger plate, another sausage or rasher of bacon and a help yourself cereal and I'd recommend this to anyone as the staff were polite and friendly.

Room Tip: The hotel is on the sea front and although we didn't have a sea view, many rooms do.
