“Eastbourne in a heatwave!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2013

Most of the hotels in Eastbourne are on the seafront like this one but we didn't ask for a sea view as would have to pay £10 each for this so we had a room at the back of the hotel. Although it was small it was adequate for the two of us with a double bed and en- suite shower. This would have been ok but for the heatwave we had during our stay. The window, which was only small had to be open and even with it open as wide as it would go there was no air circulating and as the room was right on the main road at the back it was very noisy for most of the night and especially first thing in the morning! We did ask for a room change the next morning and although we had to pay the £10 each for the sea view room it was much bigger with more windows and a lot more comfortable for the rest of our stay so worth it!
Overall we enjoyed our stay here. The breakfasts were good and the staff pleasant.

Room Tip: Depending on what time of year you stay and for how long it may be worth having a sea view room. The...

We booked late on booking.com and were very pleased when we arrived at the hotel. It was absolutely immaculate with helpful staff and an excellent breakfast in the morning. Will definitely return and recommend to friends and family

I stayed here with my mum and 89 year old grandmother. We stayed for 3 nights. After reading some reviews that people had put on here we were a little concerned with how the place was. When we went to our rooms we found nothing to complain about. The single room my grandma had was the perfect size for her and me and my mum had a family room. Both were extremely clean and tidy.

The breakfast was amazing. They came round with juices and then brought over your choice of tea or coffee. They then brought over toast and took you order. The full English was great as was the omelettes.

We had dinner at the hotel as well and really enjoyed it.

Overall we had a great weekend and would definitely go back again.

* Walking directly to the main entrance. The receptionist was looking straight at us, however we were directed to use the side entrance, as the main doors were locked. (Not a good start)

* unfriendly, unwelcoming, antagonistic, and lacking in customer care specifically relating to checking in.

* Unhelpful and offhand with directions to room.

* No heating, on enquiry were told - "we allow one hour of heating throughout the night, when management decide.

* In the bathroom there was no shower gel, or bathing products, but an excess of shampoo?

* In the evening we received a phone call in our room, from the management ....that the tv was too loud - this should be fixed to a maximum that does not 'set up' the customer for complaints that are due to management negligence.

* Check out time was 11.00..you had to pay if you wanted to leave any later.

* On leaving, no acknowledgement from the receptionist. As we went outside, we were followed by another couple who had just cancelled the rest of their stay there, as they were disgusted by many things.

We stayed at this hotel either end of a short trip over to france, sailing from newhaven.
The staff are all very attentive, couldn't do enough for you, nothing was too much trouble.
Dinner was good, breakfast was excellent, whatever you wanted, however you wanted it!!
The room we had on first night was a little on the small side but, as we were only needing a bed for the night before setting off, it was totally adequate.
For the price we paid it was great value. We were going to stay at local Travelodge for similar money but I'm glad we didn't.
Parking was no problem with the hotels parking permit system which worked really well both nights.

On arrival, at 230pm we had to use the side entrance ? main doors closed and locked?! Did not feel very welcoming!
Receptionist not over friendly. Told us the basics then carried on with what she was doing. No 'have a nice stay' or any other recognition. Very few people around. Did not see any other staff. No one in restaurant.
Room 234 - family room - nothing special - basic, bathroom could have been cleaned a lot better than it was, dirty water marks in and around bath and sink areas.
1 double, 1 single for us and our daughter. Room smelt really musty and stale when we arrived. Went out for the afternoon & evening meal etc. Returned and went to sleep around 10.30 as we were tired and had travelled for 5 hours to get there. Sometime after midnight was waken by the fire alarm. Quickly stuck my nose out the door to be told by another resident that it wasn't a fire , just water leaking in some bedrooms which had tripped the alarm. Returned to my bed for a while then the alarm went off. A few minutes later it went again, so I went out to the door again, talked to another couple, The husband went down stairs to see what exactly was going on while I waited with his wife. Other people started to move around to see what was happening. The husband came back up in a few minutes and said he wasn't happy as there was Boiling hot water pouring through bedrooms on the 2 lower floors, and straight down to reception. We all decided to quickly pack bags get dressed & go down to reception as apparently the manager wasn't going to bother calling any emergency services! He was racing up & down the stairs with tools, soaking wet talking really fast in his foreign accent which no one could really understand. By this time there were several guests arriving down stairs with their luggage some very wet !- none of us knew what exactly was happening and felt very uneasy as to what may happen next. The fire brigade was eventually called, arrived fairly quickly and isolated electricity in the particular area and dealt with the water. We asked the Fireman what we should do as there was quite a group of us now. He said they had done everything they could. The hotel then needed an electrician etc. He advised us not to stay at the hotel as there would be no way of alerting us if a fire did start anywhere else in the building. There was still a quieter beeping noise which went on all the time we remained in the hotel. I don't think anyone would have slept through it? The manager said everything was ok and we could go back to our rooms which a few people did. About twenty - thirty people including us & the soaking wet guests said we did not feel safe to stay there plus the noise issue so he said he would find rooms in another hotel for everyone & book Taxi's to take us there. We were brought out teas & coffees while we waited. Some of the residents were very unhappy! I did feel a bit sorry for the manager as he did try his best to keep everyone happy in the circumstances. There seemed to be only him, a young chap - son?& the receptionist - all not that understandable due to their accents which did hinder the situation! We were finally collected & taken to the Great Western Lansdowne hotel down the road. Lovely! Got to our rooms around 2amish? had a lovely family room, spotless, felt very homely, well appointed and breakfast was brilliant. The Riviera manager did give us all cash for the Taxi's so I don't think he could have done much more, but I would not feel at all safe to return to this hotel so therefore could not recommend it !

Me and my partner have just returned from an overnight stay. The room we stayed in 138 was good very clean and the breakfast was excellent.
The only down side to it was that the walls were paper thin we could hear everything that was going on in the room next to us , including being woken up by there alarm .
If you want to stay there for a decent night sleep I wouldn't recommend it ,but the location food and room itself ( cleanliness) were really good
