Stayed here with a groupon deal in February. We were very lucky with the weather which was warm and sunny on the first day and mainly dry the next two days.
We took our dog for the very first time to a hotel and was very pleased that we did. We had two rooms on the top floor right at the back of the hotel. I was quite pleased about this as it meant we didn't have many people passing the room just in case our dog started to bark if he heard something. This luckily wasn't a problem.
The view from our room was not bad at all. You could see the hills and the town. The room size was fine. It was a small bed to what we were used to and we even had a cot in the room and we had two chairs. The bathroom however was small and the sink was the size you would have in a cloakroom. There was a small shelf so you had somewhere to put your toiletries. They did provide hair shampoo and body wash which was very nice. There was a heated towel rail which worked. I would have liked to have perhaps a hook behind the door or over the bath a towel rack as space was limited in there. The rooms and bathrooms and everything was very clean.
The other room was smaller than ours but had a much bigger bathroom with a full sized sink and a surround so you could place your toiletries there. This room was much darker as it was set back between two walls so the view wasn't as good. There were pigeons living there which you could hear. There were nine steps down between the two rooms so if walking was an issue then you would need to tell reception when you booked.
The rooms had an alarm on them so if it was left opened it would sound. A good idea if you have children. There was a selection of tea, coffee and decafe, chocolate and shortbread biscuits. Box of tissues and a really good directional light by the bed for reading. There was a phone but no clock nor USB port. The wifi was via the cloud which was free or you could sign up for it.
There was a charge of £10 per night for the dog. They provided a mattress with a washable cover on but unfortunately our dog would not use. The size would be fine for a small to large dog. A big water bowl with a towel underneath so the carpet wouldn't get wet and a very handy towel to dry your dog after a walk if necessary. Dogs are not allowed in the main dining room but can go into the bar area. We ate a few meals in the bar for this reason and it was fine. In the bar area they have tables and chairs so you can eat your meals but they also have comfy chairs and a tv.
On to the food. Well what can I say we really enjoyed it. The local pork was really nice. Some of the foods like steak you will have to pay a supplement on. The local cheddar cheese that was served at breakfast was out of this world and I'm sorry that I did not get the name of it. I would have loved to have bought some. The dining experience in the main room was very good. Staff were exceptionally friendly, helpful and professional. Bread was served with your meal and a good selection of wine. Depending how full the hotel is you do need to book a table. Our last night we ate in the bar so we could have the dog with us and they very kindly let us have the a la carte menu. The only sad thing is, understandably, you don't have the bread or the same kind of service as the main restaurant, the bar is a more informal place. Having said that the blonde lady (name escapes me) who was on duty in the bar that night was fantastic a really lovely and helpful person.
Breakfast can get extremely busy. When we took the dog out first thing the restaurant was empty. By the time we were back and the others we up and dressed it was around 8.30 and tables were getting full. By 9am it is full and people had to wait. The young man who had to deal with people getting annoyed dealt with it very calmly. It is not his fault that everyone turns up at once. The tables were cleared very quickly to make room for others.
We did visit the swimming pool which is nice and warm. However, after 10 minutes we had to get out as there was going to be a group private swimming lesson. I feel that management are probably unaware of this issue but the parents were walking in with their children with their shoes on. The swimming instructor should be telling them to take shoes off or over the shoe slips should be made available.
The hotel was Ideally situated. Parking was an issue when we went and we were unable to park outside the hotel but managed to find space a few roads away. I have never been to Eastbourne and found the local people extremely friendly. Across the road to the hotel before the beach (which is stones no sand) they have a walk way which is ideal if you have roller blades lovely and flat and you can go the length of the sea front. We could even let the dog of the lead. Don't think many places are dog friendly there and of course everything revolved around him so we didn't get to do much there except walking. It was absolutely lovely getting up early to walk him, not many people around, the sun is coming up the air is fresh and of course last thing at night. Yes it was cold out but because you have to go we got to see the lights of the pier which the others didn't as they were to lazy to go.
Thoroughly recommend the hotel and would certainly go back again and I would take the dog.
