“Another memorable visit”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

We have stayed at The New Wilmington for the last six years both at Christmas and Spring breaks
We have always rated the hotel highly and just when you think it can't get any better they have done it again with their new menu. The choices are very varied and the food and presentation is excellent thanks to Ray and his team. Special diets are well catered for and nothing is ever too much trouble, all the staff are so kind and welcoming. We always return home feeling rested and relaxed. I think the fact that many guests return regularly says it all.
Thank you to you all and we look forward to our next visit. Kind regards to you all.

Stayed for 2 nights, Friday and Saturday, as we were attending a friends wedding in nearby Winter Gardens, which the location of this hotel was perfect.

Reception, restaurant and lounge were fine and we were located a room on the top 4th floor to which the one lift only went to the 3rd floor. Room when we finally found it was very dated with a bed and floor that both slopped, with bed also having a valance, very 80's! So two nights of not great sleep at least the drink from the wedding reception helped on the Saturday night!

Hotel clientele seemed to consist of a coach party of OAP's from up North so at least we were the youngest!

In fairness I can say we have ticked staying at the New Wilmington of the bucket list so no need to return.

Dear Lord Gannon
We are sorry your recent stay with us did not come up to your expectations and I was quite surprised when I read your review as I personally dealt with your check out on the Sunday morning and when I asked if everything was ok for you, your wife duly replied yes thank you.
The hotels caters for a whole range of different clientele, from coach holidays, business People and families. We had 75 in for breakfast on the Sunday morning you were staying and only 32 were coach holiday guests.

This was a real 'crash and go' visit. In town to see Something at theatre and needed a place to stay. Room was small but then we got it for an absolute bargain so can't complain. En-suite bathroom and room absolutely spotless. Bed comfortable. Staff friendly right the way through from check in to check out. We were rushed at breakfast as needed to check out for an early appointment, but told the staff our predicament and they brought us an excellent breakfast in double quick time, with smiles all the way. You would have struggled to find a spot of dust anywhere in the communal areas of this hotel. The conviviality of the staff seemed to infect the (predominantly older) guest, who were most pleasant. Don't think they had parking but had no issue parking in street. Definitely recommend this hotel to others.

We stayed here 1 night at the end of our South Downs Way walk. A lot of B&Bs and hotels don't like long distance walkers as they usually only want 1 night stays but this one actually gives you a discount if you arrive without a car. Comfortable room with plenty of space and good shower. Friendly, efficient staff. Good breakfast. We got the impression that there were a lot of regular customers staying there.

On arrival the welcome was friendly and efficient. The room was spacious, light, spotless and well appointed. The restaurant was smart and relaxing and the menu for breakfast and evening meals was well thought out. The staff were charmingly easy about special dietary requirements. The staff made an effort to know us and to remember our preferences. The evening entertainment was good quality and fun. The public areas were smart, modern and plentiful.
We stayed in the hotel in order to participate in the Easter dancing at the Winter Gardens. Being 100meters from the venue made this hotel the perfect location for us.

We recently stayed in the family room at The New Wilmington Hotel and it was really lovely. We were situated away from the restaurant, lounge area which is fantastic when you have young children. Everywhere was lovely and clean and the staff are fantastic and so friendly. When they made up our room they folded the children's pyjamas and even tucked their teddies into bed, which the children loved. The restaurant staff were very helpful and friendly and made you feel that nothing was too much trouble. All the staff made us all feel very welcome. It has a real homely feel but is also modern. Located just behind the seafront which is good as you do not hear the seafront traffic.

This is a very well located hotel with high standards, it's cleanliness, decor and maintenance would put some 5 star hotels to shame. We had a very good experience but in the spirit of constructive criticism there are a few minor improvements we would suggest.

Firstly, we made a dinner reservation for 8pm before we arrived. On arrival it was evident that most residents here eat at about 6pm and our dinner service was stopping all the staff from finishing and going home. It made us feel slightly awkward even though we sat down to eat before the time we had reserved. Had we been told 'last orders' were at 7.30 we could have had the option of arriving earlier or eating elsewhere, either would have been preferable.

Secondly, they are still using those fiddly little sachets of shower gel and shampoo which are rather awkward to open with wet hands. Then they fall through the bars of the chrome wire soap dish. It was rather like something from Mr Bean when I bent down to pick it up from the floor, opened the shower door with my backside, instinctively bobbed up again and banged my head on the soap dish! That would have definitely have been worth £250 to "You've Been Framed". In our opinion wall mounted dispensers are much easier for the hotel and guest, so long as the products are OK. We far prefer them to awkward sachets or little bottles.

The other bit of silliness was at breakfast, which was very good, by the way. The menu states that you can choose up to 6 portions from the cooked breakfast items list. Fair enough, so for example you could have 2 eggs, 2 rashers of bacon and 2 sausages. But don't you dare ask for 3 portions of any one item! This unwritten rule was spelled out when I asked for 1 egg, 2 (small) portions of beans and 3 rashers! On the first day I asked for this the waitress managed to sweet-talk the chef into letting me have it. The next day I got downgraded to 2 rashers yet I could have had a sausage instead! How does this help the hotel? Isn't it just needless pettiness?

So, all in all a very good hotel with a few minor eccentricities, don't let them deter you from staying here though.

Dear Bognor

Thank you for your comments, We are glad that you enjoyed you stay.

All of our guests are welcome to come in for dinner anytime between 6.30 and 8.00, unfortunately it seems that everyone dined early on the night that you stayed. We do not ask our guests to book for dinner, so we do not know what time they will be dining. Our restaurant staff are always very conscious of guests who dine later and try to be as quiet as possible when laying tables for breakfast.

You may also be pleased to know that we have now taken all limits off the cooked english breakfast after reading your comments.

We do have small bottles of Duck Island toiletries in our superior rooms.

We hope you will visit again sometime.
