“Full marks for all aspects”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

We had pre booked at another hotel in Eastbourne which we walked out of even before we saw the room. Found the New Wilmington and are we glad we did. We received a warm welcome and were very pleased with all aspects: conveniently situated, excellent decor throughout, excellent food with good choice, very friendly and helpful staff, rooms serviced every day. Will have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to friends and family and hope to be revisit when we come to Eastbourne again.

Room Tip: Room 334, although on the top floor, does not suffer from the usual hotel noises e.g. lift doors, do...

Had a five day break at this hotel. Staff very friendly and helpful. Decoration throughout the hotel was very good. Food excellent with plenty of choice. Five minutes from seafront and only a ten minute walk to shops and railway station. Theatres just around the corner. Would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

The staff are so friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble.

We were on a 7 day coach trip and never having been to the hotel before, we were a bit apprehensive. All our fears were soon quashed. The hotel is very impressive inside and out. Tastefully decorated and welcoming. Even some friends that met us there for a few hours were very impressed.

We stayed in Room 2 which is on ground floor level. The double bed was very comfortable and the room looked as though it had been refurbished. Not a huge room (just ample space) and it was adjacent to a fire escape which was good. No step into this room but I did notice there is a step into Room 3. However, in Room 2 the bathroom is very small and there is a walk-in shower which I asked for, as I'm disabled. The step into the shower is very high though (roughly 26/27 inches I would think), so if you struggle getting up this might be an issue (there is a handrail which I used to pull myself up with inside the shower). Anti-slip shower mats are available from reception too. I'm sure the staff would be only too willing to help if any problems arose.

There are a few steps into the front of the hotel (about 3 or 4) and the dining room and bar are step free.

The food is fabulous and all meals are waiter service. Tables are allocated/accommodated on arrival. At breakfast there are two choices. You can have cereal and a full cooked breakfast afterwards if you wish, which sets you up for the day. Vegetarian options are also available.

There is an extensive choice for evening meal - 3 courses. There is even a 'specials' menu, so the only issue is deciding what to have!

All food is piping hot and any dietary requirements (ie gluten free) will be accommodated - you only need to ask.

However, there are a few steps down into the lounge area at the back of the hotel, which is again tastefully decorated - I think the hotel has been refurbished recently. There is a chair lift at the side of the steps, so if they are an issue, then this can be used so you don't have to encounter. The lift is here to the upper floors and there are toilets on this level, so the only way into the lift/toilet is down about 4 steps but you can use the chair lift.

All luggage is brought to and from the rooms, so there is no lugging. If you have any issues, just ask a member of staff and I'm sure they'll help.

There is usually entertainment on but we didn't stay at night so can't comment on this. Although other people on the coach trip found it entertaining.

As for location - it's about 4 mins walk to the promenade. Not far at all, as the hotel is situated in a road adjacent, so no sea view. The shops and precinct aren't too far away either - probably about 7 to 10 mins depending on how fast you walk! It is diagonally across from the Congress (where the tennis is being played) and close to some local shops and restaurants. It isn't far from the Band Stand either which is on the promenade and there is music/acts on, on various dates. Eastbourne is very flat and easy to manoeuvre around.

All in all, I can't recommend staying at this hotel enough. I can't comment on other rooms but from what people on our coach trip said, it's second to none and people go back time and time again, so this tells you something!

Upon departure, some of the staff came out and waved us off which was a lovely touch.

Room Tip: It might be advisable checking the room's suitability via email or phone, especially if you are...

We were impressed by the welcome and appearance .
The room was nicely decorated , well appointed and front facing although there's no particular view.
However came late afternoon while waiting in the foyer for a taxi when the porter began hurrying outside returning with suitcases in each hand , then back out again repeating the job in hand over and over , we looked at each other. We soon saw what the job in hand was as groups of people wandered in and so it turned out to be a coaching holiday party
More revealed at dinner . The dining room presented what you could call two seperate areas of what we gathered were private clientle [us] and those on a coaching holiday who a couple of days in seemed well looked after, in our opinion, better than private guests in fact with dining room staff looking to us as if they were bending over backwards to cater to their needs first . So I do agree with a previous reviewer that this is a hotel which caters for what looked like coach parties. Entertainment on hand too.
Apart from this the food was good.
However we would not return, preferring to be quiet and relaxed on our holidays.

Room Tip: Not sure you would have choice

Dear Casmana

We are glad you were impressed by the hotel overall, We like to think all our guests are treated the same however and wherever they come from, Some people are only able to travel by coach as they get older as most companies offer door to door service and give help with luggage etc:
We are sorry you felt uncomfortable having other fellow holiday makers in just because they had travelled by coach.

Booked a one night stay, bed and breakfast.. Great location. A small choice of restaurants, Winter Garden, Theatre, and Eastbourne tennis club and beach all within 200 hundred metres. Parking is free in the road outside or the hotel will supply a parking voucher (£1 per day) for the surrounding area. The Hotel was clean and the room we had (108) had a new Bathroom. My impression is the hotel has recently been updated. Although there was a dinner menu we chose to eat out. The breakfast and service was excellent. A choice of juices, cereals etc. and then various hot items to choose from. The staffs attention, helpfulness, service was outstanding.

We stayed two nights as a family of four in a superior family room, easily enough space. Room was big, everything was clean, food was good - but what stands out is the excellent service from every member of staff.

They did everything they could to make the stay as comfortable as possible - even down to checking if we wanted heated or unheated plates for the (free!) children's breakfasts.

Five star service, thank you
