“Cream Tea, Glorious to Celebrate”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

Just had a cream tea at this hotel booked a table in the front of the sun lounge by the window. A lovely view. I had a decaf tea served in a lovely teapot matching the same pattern to all the crockery, ours was in a poppy style. The tray arrived serving sandwiches selected specifically by my husband.... Salmon, prawn, ham and egg mayonnaise. The second tier was carrot cake, coffee and walnut cake and lemon drizzle soaked with lemon, intermingled with raspberries, fabulous. On top were scones already piled with jam, clotted cream and fresh cranberries on top. To finish, my husband had ordered strawberries with clotted cream served in a martini glass each and sparkling wine in champagne flutes.
A beautiful cream tea to celebrate 10 years marriage together.

What a great holiday we have just had at the Cumberland Hotel. Rooms Good, very clean. We stayed in room 403 sea view. The staff were excellent very kind, and treated us like royalty. We went for 5 days with Plimbleys coaches. The biggest thing that made our holiday special is my husband is VEGAN. The hotel staff not only fed him but fed him royaly. His own Dairy free spread on the table with his soya milk every meal. I myself am a meat eater and my meals were superb also The bar staff were great. But the kitchen staff were very special. I cannot recommed them enough. The sevice we received during our stay far outreached the price we paid. Thank you all at the Cumberland.

Had a refurbished room but all the rooms seem to have creacking floors, even the short corridor outside three rooms creaked which really spoilt the weekend as after the bottle man emptied his bin at 7.15am and woke the neighbours the squeaks started and couldn't get back to sleep! The menu had a good choice in the evenings and buffet breakfast with plenty of choice. There is a new lift which is small bit we all managed. There is still work to be done, the ceiling needs to be painted, but if the floorboards are sorted it would be an ideal place to stay. There is no pool or any fitness equipment and wi-fi is only in the ground floor, they did say they were going to sort that.

We stayed at this hotel to attend a club dinner and dance. It is currently going through some major maintenance work and where the work has been completed it is excellent however other areas are very tired and in need of some TLC not least of which was our bedroom. The lift was out of action due to it being replaced however we were informed in advance and a porter was provided to deliver/recover our baggage.
The food was excellent and so were the staff, they could not have been more helpful and pleasant. The dining room and conservatory look out to sea and the promenade is well presented even at this time of year.
Parking is street only and the hotel provides parking vouchers at a reasonable price however finding a spot is difficult. There is a multi storey car park some 300 metres away in Trinity place and this is not too expensive at only £2.60 per 24 hours (when we stayed)

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side have a sea view

have just returned from a 5day break at the cumberland with abacus coaches. the staff was very friendly and most helpful , the food was good and plentiful, had a large seaview room with balcony which unfoortunately the weather prevented us using. the only downside was the sqeeky floor boards and the noisy guests in the next room which turned out to be two elderly ladies. all in all it was a great hotel and hope to return at some stage in better weather.

Room Tip: room 106 large seaview room with balcony

We stayed with a group of 36 Scottish dancers for a weekend. Apart from disturbance from a party at an adjacent hotel (the Mansion Lions) which spilled outside & went on until the early hours, all were very pleased with their accommodation. we had a room overlooking the sea which was nice. The room was plenty big enough for two of us and all the music equipment to be stored. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. We had several people with special diet needs which were all dealt with very well. They even have a toaster dedicated to gluten free bread. That is real service, and not what one comes to expect except at the top of the range hotels. But at The Cumberland, nothing seems to be too much bother. So nice for the guest to come first.... The group are already in the planning stagfe for next year. Well done, The Cumberland

We stayed overnight with a three course dinner, bed and breakfast for £69 in a double room with balcony overlooking the sea. The food was excellent and the value for money was amazing. The hotel has been revamped in a 1930's Art Deco style and the lounge/dining areas were very luxurious, the rooms however were quite tired and needed some maintenance i.e. the wind blew in through the windows.
The deal that we had couldn't be faulted, however, the price of the drinks was rather steep and £12 for two Irish Coffees obviously helps the hotel to recoup some revenue.
We didn't use the pool/terrace as we visited on a wet October day but it was well appointed if you were visiting in the summer.

Room Tip: First floor sun terrace rooms look wonderful but you are directly overlooked by everyone with the ba...
