“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 21 November 2013

Carlo's is hidden down a back street away from the town centre but it's well worth seeking out. We ate on a sunday evening during a long weekend break and were glad we did. The decor and atmosphere make for a relaxing meal and the presence of regular diners is always a good sign. The menu is varied and interesting being slightly different from the majority of Italian restaurants. My pasta was perfectly cooked with a rich tomato sauce and my wife's mushroom dish was pronounced excellent. House wine was good too. Look forward to a return visit. Highly recommended.

“Not great !”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

Went to Carlo's with friends who had dined there before. Really looking forward to going but very disappointed with the food. Beautiful restaurant. Attentive staff. Decided to try the Porcini Mushroom Risotto. Should have quite strong flavours with the mushrooms, the wine and the parmesan. Maybe they had a different chef doing the cooking on Sunday evening, but the risotto lacked just about everything including the porcini mushrooms. It certainly wasn't seasoned enough and I couldn't taste any wine if it had been added. There may have been the odd porcini mushroom in the rice (which was the colour of porridge) but it didn't taste of anything resembling a risotto. Why were there button mushrooms perched on top. The parmesan shavings were about the best bit of the dish and they were few and far between. All in all, a very poor meal.

“Good service, poor food.”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

My ex partner and I frequented this place regularly several years ago and left a stellar review after being slow to find a place we had heard so much about.

Well, recently ive been twice the first time I just put it down to being a bad night unmelted cheese on pastas, burnt pieces in sauces, raw cauliflower and soggy carrots were just some of the highlights. It wasnt much better the second time.

The young staff were attentive and extremely polite and it was very busy.

“Lovely staff, disappointing food”
Reviewed 29 October 2013 via mobile

Been meaning to try this restaurant for some time as it had been recommended by friends so booked it for a quiet birthday celebration. I had to phone on the day to add an extra and the person who answered the phone wasn't sure they could do it & promised to call back but didn't. Fortunately when we turned up we were met with warm smiles and reassurance that they had managed to accommodate my request. All the staff were very friendly throughout and we never felt pressurised. We were given a rundown of the specials by Carlo but no prices. Our veggie guests were able to find suitable starter and main. The menu was attractive but pricey compared to similar quality in the area. I ordered the deep fried baby squid to start and altho there was a mixture of baby squid & rings it was very tasty & the garlic aioli was so garlicky it almost burnt my tongue. A simple but great dish. However my main was disappointing. Nothing tragic but just a bit bland lacking in creativity and flavour. The veal was sliced a bit too thinly, had little flavour & it was plonked on the plate with only a small portion of chips and a bland sauce that looked & tasted like it had come out of a plastic pouch (hopefully not). No presentation and very little taste. The steamed vegetables were served separately in dish to be shared out. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots... You get the picture. It was like being in an 80s time capsule. My partner had a similar reflection on his steak. Ok. But nothing special to warrant the high price. I have been lucky enough to have eaten in lots of Italian restaurants in Italy & have rarely been disappointed whether it was pizza, pasta or a regional speciality. Good Italian food is generally uncomplicated but tasty and satisfying. What a missed opportunity!
