Llandudno itself is a pleasant place, along the coast in North Wales. Not nearly as cute & charming as nearby Conwy, the Great Orme (crescent) with its many ocean facing hotels is a throwback to a by-gone era. We booked thru Booking.com, because we couldn't find rooms in Conwy. Getting here is itself an endeavor - missed the train to Llandudno from Llandudno Junction, waited 30 minutes for a taxi, which we were grateful to get. Once here, on a dark and stormy night, the hotel had stopped serving dinner at seven but got us a taxi into the main part of town. Our room itself was up and down and around - in what we discovered used to be the servants quarters back in the Victorian era. Small, with a small window high up, the sheets felt like the worst grade linens possible, and the faded sad brown pilly blankets made me avert my eyes. Staying here is sort of like a Fawlty Towers experience - pleasant staff from around the world, and a clientele easily over 70. The WiFi is only accessible from the lounge & bar - but even then, only on a spotty basis. It did force us out of our tiny room into the main glassed in porch, where even the 70+ year old folks were upset they couldn't use their new tablets without good WiFi. Maybe the rooms that are on the first level are nice. We were clearly not their typical clientele, but if they hope to have a business after this group dies...they need to upgrade the experience to match the location.

Hydro Hotel is situated just across the road from the stunning expanses of beach and our room (with sea view) had a great view of the Great Orme and pier. First impressions are good, the hotel grounds are well kept and welcoming and the Reception staff always with a welcoming smile. In fact each and every staff member we met was happy, courteous and very polite. The hotel has a bar & sitting lounge just off of Reception and has long galleries along the front of the hotel where you can sit and chat/read a book/play a game (from the selection on offer in the games room).
We stayed for 4 nights and found the food to be superb quality. We paid at Reception each day for our evening meal and for £15 for 3 courses and not having to set foot outside, it was well worth it. I like the way that you have a set table number throughout your stay, you get to know the staff, and they you. This also means you sit at the same table for breakfast and dinner. Dinner is usually a choice of 5 main courses including a Chef's Special you have to order in advance (usually at breakfast that day). The table service and food were excellent andit is very highly organised with breakfast/dinner served in a one hour slot each day.
Our room was on the far right hand side of the hotel as you look at it and as such a very peaceful area. It also had a sea view which I highly recommend. Rooms on the left hand side may be above theballroomand possibly noisy if you want an early night! The hotel does have a lift but be aware it has multiple split levels, if mobility is an issue. The ballroom is large with enough seating (just) for large amounts of people and each night's entertainment is posted on the board opposite Reception. Music is of course aimed at the older generation but very enjoyable and the bingo played throughout the evening is a lot of fun too (and addictive!). There is also a bar in the ballroom, which is in addition to the one in Reception. The latter of which also serves toasted sandwiches etc for lunch which were very nice.
Heating in the rooms is quite old fashioned radiators and these were not set to come on at all during the evening, only in the morning, but overall the room was not cold. It was a good size with a good sized bathroom and comfy beds. Cleaning standards were excellent. The hotel does also have a wheelchair lift to access the entrance as there is a flight of steps. We found the hotel to be well sign postedinternally and very helpfully to sell postcards and stamps in the Reception.
Most of all the staff make this a great hotel, but the food is faultless and the hotel, although it shows its age, has very adequate facilities and I would most certainly come back again.

Be sure to take the cable car or tram tot he top of the Great Orme when in Llandudno. Also, eat one night at Mamma Rosa's Italian Restaurant - walking distance from the hotel and the best food I've had - ever!

Room Tip: The sea view is definitely worth the extra money. Rooms near the ballroom (left side of hotel) could...

We went on another Alpha holiday, which we have always enjoyed in the past. This one started very well, Nice Hotel well positioned, nice room, freindly , efficient , helpful staff.Good entertainment and bar.
This time though the food was poor, "cheaper cuts" smaller portions ,strange choices of veg. etc.
I hope though that this is just a hiccup at this hotel as we have booked another holiday based on past experiences.

Have just spent a week at the Hydro Hotel a large drab building in an excellent position on the promenade,on entering our room 116 on the first floor found the door lock very insecure door frame had been repaired several times, the two windows looked out onto a very accessible flat roof and both windows could not be locked but after complaining things were rectified in a fashion the same day.
The room was very dark and lighting very poor especially in the bathroom, the room was clean and had a clean comfortable bed also an excellent shower.
The dining room was very large and bright but tables crammed together, the food was basic but acceptable with quick friendly service, the full English breakfast came with half a slice of black pudding and a quarter slice of fried bread why bother?
Nice bar with lovely views but was offered on three occasions Gin& Tonic in a half pint beer glass as that was all they had at that time i refused and didn't bother.
Room 116 had a lovely sea view that was spoiled by all the rubbish on the flat roof right outside the windows.
On my next visit llandudno i'm sure i can find a nicer hotel to stay in.
