“Disapointment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2009

We arrived for a two night stay and had booked a Superior room as we were ready for a good break with a bit of luxury. When we were shown to our room the first impression was tired and in need of a spring clean, the grout in the shower was discoloured and both the sink and the shower had a build up of dirt in those hard to reach places- ie under the rim of the sink and around the hinges on the door. The water took a good while to clear from the sink and shower making it necessary for a quick shower to avoid flooding the bathroom floor. The bulb over the shower was out. The pillows were discoloured beneath the pristine pillow cases and the 4 magazines placed in the room dated back to 2000. There were large cracks in the plaster on the walls. More seriously the fire detection had been removed from the room as a new system was being installed, when an electrician was called to replace the absent detector he admitted he didn't know if it would work and failed to test that it did. On the outside of the building adjacent to our room was the external fire escape. The wall here had bricks removed and to our horror we heard pigeons in the roof void of our bedroom, on further investigation we observed pigeons entering and leaving the void, these could be heard scurrying around in the ceiling of our bedroom. We were offered a different room but declined to take it as our overall experience at the Empire was a poor one. On a positive note the staff were pleasant and the character of the hotel was lovely.

Stayed for a reunion weekend with sixteen family members, from Friday evening meal through to Sunday lunch. Had done initial research on Trip Adviser plus an evening meal 'on site'. All the positive comment you read here is reliable. Staff discreet and efficient, relaxing public areas (free wi-fi, an indication to me of a 'good' hotel), excellent overall value. 4/5 for rooms only because they are on the small side but they have everything you need with some nice little touches. As they had some doubles available single members of our group were upgraded at no extra cost. Bravo!

We stayed here for a long week-end (Fri-Mon) in early June. The hotel faces the top end of Mostyn Street-the main shopping area. The Great Orme and sea front are few yards to the left and the Great Orme Tramway a few yards away on the right. The hotel is in a slightly elevated position so access might prove difficult for people with walking difficulties. However, they do make good provision within the hotel for people with disability.

There is free parking available at several locations, although some parking areas can be a bit of a squeeze. There is a fair sized garage at the rear of the building.

The hotel remains faithful to its Victorian heritage and consequently, the decor may not appeal to everyone. If your taste is modern and minimalist-this might not be the place for you. The hotel and rooms are decorated in Victorian style so expect older style fittings and furniture. Some of the room furniture is original, but the fittings are modern reproduction. We booked a superior room. It was nice-but a little small. The over-large ceiling lights and original furniture might have contributed to a rather cramped feel in the room.

The bathroom was fine with a very powerful shower. It even featured a 'chain-pull' cistern. I haven't seen one of those in a hotel for years. Our room had a private bathroom, easy chairs, flat screen TV and DVD player. They also provide a small decanter of sherry.

The pool and gym areas are very good. However, the spa was out of order and the bench in the sauna was a bit rickety. Overall, though, the leisure facilities were fine.
The hotel has two restaurants. We ate at ‘Watkins & Co’ each evening. We stayed half-board and this included a four-course evening meal. It was excellent. Tip-if you don’t want to eat a great deal-skip the soup but make sure you have dessert. Breakfast was lovely with a choice of full or light Welsh breakfast. Top marks for fantastic food and friendly and efficient service.

Overall, this is a great hotel. All the staff were helpful. Even if the decor isn’t to your taste, the rooms are clean, well appointed and comfortable. I would strongly recommend a stay here.

stayed recently with my mature 12 year old as a treat - we had a fantastic time. service was courteous and friendly without being intrusive. we rented a dvd from the hotel library and used the pool extensively. the charge was per room not per person and at £110 per night inc breakfast (there are deals to get free dinner on certain quieter days of week) i think this is an absolute bargain

Very pleasant stay, wih good service.

Being unable to walk far the staff made sure as we had a room close to the lift. The hotel has many levels and proved difficult to get around as there are steps and stairs seemingly all over the place. Getting to the Bar was a little trying but we managed it.

The outside pool was used by part of our group, but we used in the indoor pool because of the cold. Both pools could do with a bit of TLC. they look a litte tried.

The Room felt small but the food was very good.

We stayed an extra night this being Sunday - not a good idea - Monday morning bright and early the binmen and their truck were doing their rounds beeping for ages all the way up the street. We may have been better taking a room on the back.

Although not residents, we were recommended the poolside restaurant. Outstanding value for money and quite delicious. A real cut above. Service speedy, courteous and attentive. I wish we had a local like this!

After booking into the Grand Hotel for 3 nights, and finding it completely unsuitable, due to its low standard of everything, we checked into the Empire. Make no mistake, this is a quality hotel with 4 star accomodation and service. Gym, Pool area, sauna and steam room were spot on. Rooms were of a 4 star quality, and this hotel should be proud of its service.
