“Hotel Hell”
Reviewed 28 September 2007

Stayed at what was once a great hotel and landmark in this wonderful town.
So many memories here ruined by the new management who treat the guests like Basil Fawlty treated his !

Rooms were old, tired and not very clean either and the place was so hot it was unbearable. I'm sure this is to get you to buy drinks.

The front desk is like checkpoint charlie and if you want a decent meal, go to homecookin across the road as the hotel breakfast was greasy thrown onto the plate. The carvery well..........Frozen veg and a couple of joints do not constitute a carvery.

Not friendly, not nice, never again.

It is a shame these customers did not enjoy their stay. It is true, the hotel is under new management and things have changed, mostly for the better we believe. We are 2 star WTB graded which I am sure readers of this site will note are independently awarded. There is very little else to comment on here, except to point out that all our vegetables are prepared fresh daily and our Carvery is regularly sold out every week, particularly with local people and repeat visitors. Kind regards - Rose Tor.

Last week we stayed at this wonderful friendly hotel. We were greeted by the owner (as we later found out) and we loved the fact that this is a truly smoke free hotel! For us Dutchmen, this was the best welcome we received in Britain and Wales. We were given a very nice and cosy room with a wonderful view on the street and we could also see the sea! The bathroom was modern and very spacious, just the way we like it. There were a lot of large soft bath towels. It was all very clean.
The bed was a romantic four poster, also with very clean sheets, we have seen very different things in the UK.

The food was excellent and the only thing you could, if you want, complain about, were the large portions. The carvery on Saturday evening was splendid, also due to the very friendly staff. The meat (real lamb, turkey and beef) was very tender and extremely well cooked. The vegetables we Dutchmen like very much were not overcooked and very tasty. Breakfast was in a friendly atmosphere and very tasty and fresh.

Certainly a hotel we will recommend to other people and we will definitely return!

On arrival the foyer smelt of grease and as another guest has put all of the warnings aren't too friendly, lots of talk of extra charges and 'de-fumigation' (ironic seeing as our room smelt before we got into it). The lady that signed us in was friendly but that doesn't make up for the grotty room tired decorations and furniture and the awful shower that varied between freezing cold and scalding hot.
We were booked in for 2 nights but after 1 night decided kipping on our friends floor for the second night was a much better option and cancelled the second night.
The breakfast was cheap and greasy.
This place is way too expensive for the standards it gives and I wouldn't go back.

We are naturally sorry that Bah3 did not enjoy their stay, and woudl have liked to have had the opportunity to put things right on the second night.

We are currently investing in upgrading and decorating all our bedrooms and public areas (which were, admittedly in need of an upgrade) as part of our rolling programme of enhancements since taking over this hotel less than twelve months ago. We do care about customer opinions and are determined to continue to enhance the hotel. Kind regards - the Rose Tor.

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times over the last 10 years as somewhere cheap, cheerful and comfortable on my company's meagre budget. I knew that the hotel was changing hands recently but decided to visit again as the quality had been good.

However I was not only put off but quite frightened by the demonstration of the new owners attitude towards their guests. My bedroom (a deluxe so more expensive!) was in an appalling state. My bed was unmade and was dirty and had hair from the previous occupant. When I went to the bar at 10 pm to ask the owners to change the bedding they were smoking there (illegal in Wales at the time). They came to my room eventually and (stupidly) I mentioned the TV didn't work. I was subjected to half an hour of tirade about previous occupants which gradually became a suspicion that I had damaged the TV myself. I eventually asked the owners to leave my room. It was quite frightening to be in the room with 2 angry people.

The breakfast was appalling - greasy and cold. As I left no-one apologised for the problems with my room the previous night or even asked if everything had been sorted out

I miss the days when this was a good B & B that I could rely on and will never ever visit again.

Unfortunately, we do not recall any incident like this occurring on our watch - especially the level of Eastenders style drama detailed. If there were any issues with the standard of housekeeping and breakfast, then we can only apologise. We are investing heavily in th eproperty to bring it up to standard and catching up on a huge backlog of maintenance. Of course, we are not the previous management that this guest seems to have such a sentimental attachment to, and whilst sorry to lose his business we feel sure that this guest will find alternatives to suit his meagre budget. Kidn regards - the Rsoe Tor.

This used to be a friendly large pub with good, if slightly shabby, rooms. It has been taken over by new management who seem to be more concerned with enforcing their rules than with making guests feel welcome. We weren't even asked if we'd had a good journey.

Before we'd even had a chance to put our bags down we were informed that there was no smoking in the rooms, that we were forbidden to take food upstairs with us and that we were being recorded on CCTV. More boarding-school-like instructions were prominently displayed in the rooms themselves - "no smoking strictly enforced and if you are caught you will be asked to leave immediately and charged £25 for your room to be defumigated [sic]"; "no visitors in rooms after 11.00 - you will be charged the full room rate for the visitor"; "no hot food takeaways in the rooms" and so on. I understand why they might have these policies, but there are ways and ways of explaining them.

The man on reception told us in the morning that we had been late coming in (it was about midnight) - he'd seen us on the CCTV. Very unnerving.

The rooms were comfortable and nicely decorated, although the bathrooms were a bit tatty, but nothing would induce us to stay there again. No marks for hospitality.

I am sorry if we have to outline the rules on arrival (admittedly occasionally a little strictly - we are only human after all, and exasperation can take it's toll!). Much of this stems to the fact that the hotel is under new ownership and we no longer support the lasse fayre attitude that previously existed, notably f allowing guests to bring back hot and cold takeaways at all hours. We make no apology for this.

As for the issue of CCTV, this is a condition of our license and in a hotel this size with no manned 24 hour reception, is the only way we can allow customers to come and go after hours as they please. Kind regards - the Rose Tor Hotel.

This i think trades on what used to be or days of when it was at the top of it's league. The web site isn't reflective of what you actually get here and the hotel is in desperate need of investment and help.

Unfortunateley i suspect the owners can not afford to close down the rooms to refurbish which means the paying punter gets a sad and tired room.

Rooms are tired, breakfast was ok and the carvery wasn't to bad but seriously not one of the best hotels and overpriced for what you get.

While we are sorry that aspects of this customer's stay were not to their total satisfaction, having only taken charge of the hotel since December 06, we can only accomplish so much in such a short time. That said, we are currently well into a programme of repair, renewal and decoration aimed at freshening up all bedrooms and public spaces. we have also since achieved a 2 star rating from the WTB and aim to take the hotel as far as we can. Kind regards - Rose Tor Hotel.
