“nice stressfree break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2008

stayed at the County hotel for 4 nights and was apprehensive after reading negative reviews. I was pleasantly suprised at the cleanliness of the hotel, helpfulness of the staff and quality of the food and accomodation. Would definately book again

This hotel didn't seem so bad last time two years ago, they have done the resturant up but the bedroom was so small and my mum had a job getting in the small shower. Chris the reception got her radiator fixed but I think I would be prepared to pay a bit more for a better room, I wonder if coach gets priority over self drive. The food was nice the entertainment a bit average and the entertaiment manager should be asked to sing a bit more, she has a beautiful voice.
Maybe they could cater for the younger age group 50 plus really listening to George Formby and dancing the Fox Trott isn't really the thing. The older people didn't get up to dance a bit of 60's would be good.

Trip advisor is always our first port of call before booking any accommodation anywhere - be that the UK or overseas. As so, the aim of this review is to be helpful, insightful and factual - to help you BEFORE you book. So here we go...

We stayed at the County Hotel at the tail end of April 2008 for two nights and we were in Llandudno for three days in total. The choice of hotel was not ours, it was booked for us so despite having read many poor reviews on here before going, we couldn't do anything about it. We had to stay there and we weren't looking forward to it... so at least we weren't surprised by what we got when we got there.

Let's go through the key points you'll need to know before going - the average age of the residents is around 70. Seriously. This is fine and the hotel is aimed pretty much exclusively at this age group. It is a tatty hotel, with shockingly ill-equipped rooms. The maze of corridors, rooms and staircases make access difficult and time consuming.

A major characteristic of the hotel is the vast range of repugnant smells that accompany the opening of each door onto the next corridor. From vomit to stale body odour to rotting vegetables to urine, the array of aromas is simply stunning. The tiny bowls of ancient pot pourri evidently made no difference.

The room was rotten to be honest. 2 uncomfortable twin beds, a medieval television, walls in poor condition, rickety furniture and a bathroom that I'm sure would have been perfect in the 1950's - which coincidently could well have been the last time the carpet was cleaned. The room was serviced to a basic level during our stay.

The food served in the hotel restaurant was appalling. Seriously, they really shouldn't be able to get away with serving food like that. I truly didn't think that it would be physically possible to provide such a wide selection of such pitiful-quality food to be served with such unpleasantness. The array of nationalities of waiting staff was commendable - it was like a meeting of the united nations in the dining room - it's just a shame that not one single person was able to be polite, courteous or even human in their service. No manners on display - not once. Plates of indesribable mess was thrown down then almost as quickly taken away whilst guests - resigned to the ill effects of consuming the slop packet soup (for example) - were still eating.

Barely a word of English was uttered by the obviously unhappy staff and getting out of there as quickly as possible was certainly the order of the day for us!

Moving on... the location of the hotel is fine, it is at the far end of the town with a decent walk to the main 'attractions'. The main road location could be a distraction for guests sleeping towards the front or sides of the building. In fact whilst I like Wales, I really do, Llandudno, in my opinion isn't really representative of this fantastic country. Having spent 3 days there, I simply cannot understand why anybody under 60 would actually choose to go there for pleasure. There's nothing specifically wrong with it, it's just that there's nothing much to actually do.

Value - it's a word so often uttered on these forums that I feel I should mention it. I understand that the price for this stay was low, and was part of a package deal. It could have been free and it would have been greatly over-priced.

So, in summary - if you have no sense of smell or taste or in fact are happy to be served by grumpy foreign waitresses who feel the world owes them a living, or if sleeping comfort isn't necessary and if you are happy drying yourself on a hand towel following a luke warm trickle of a shower in a 5 decade old bathroom then this could be the place for you.

If good food, cleanliness and a warm welcome is important and if you prefer to stay in a place that makes you feel happy rather than like bleaching your skin on departure then stay away!

I genuinely don't mean to offend anybody who has stayed here and has enjoyed it, nor mean to upset anybody planning to stay there it's just that for those people who may be considering it as somewhere to stay in Llandudno, I would heartily say 'avoid'... there HAS to be better places to stay. In fact, the end of the pier on a wet, windy night and a bacon sarnie from a snack wagon next morning would have to be preferable.

Don't say you haven't been warned.

We went ona Shearings Easter Break,it was probably the worst weather you could get bitterly cold wind off the sea,our room was very large, comfortable and we had a sea view. Despite a hot radiator it was freezing, there were extra thick warm blankets and we survived the first night we mentioned it to the room maid and reception and later the manager supplied us with a new electric heater which solved the problem, we were very impressed with this as we were with the food the service and the hotel in general. Despite the weather it was a very good break and the package was excellent value.

We have just come back from a weekend break from the County Hotel, LLandudno and I must say I dont know what hotel the other people who have put a reveiw in which we read before we went stayed at but it was not this one.

The staff were all helpful, the hotel was very clean, the food was great.

If we had any complaints it was that our holiday was not long enough

I went with my 2 sisters and sister inlaw, we made the most of our weekend, we were very disappointed in the english staff, there attitude towards some of the older residents was terrible and one of those staff was the deputy manger which myself and sister witnessed at the bar, the eastern block staff who served you in the restaurent was brilliant particular George, ( his real name Eezi),the rooms were clean and comfortable my two sisters had a few problems with there room, the reception staff were not forth coming being pleasent, my personal opinion is that shearings should take a look at the english staff behavior, I would go back there if i thought there would be changes made.
