I've been to the Dunoon Hotel on about five different occasions now, and I thought I should finally write a review. I love the Dunoon Hotel, and I love it because I think it is everything a hotel should be. The service is excellent - the staff are attentive to your every need and incredibly friendly. The food is faultless - you need to go and taste it to believe it. All the ingredients are fresh and six courses are included in the standard half board rate, enough to full anyone. The food is always presented beautifully and feels like a top-end restaurant, which for the price is excellent value for money. The hotel also prides itself on its wine cellar - many wines are sold at cost price so you can get top quality wine without breaking the bank. The rooms aren't all identikit like many modern hotels but full of character. In fact the whole hotel has a kind of timeless character - oak panelled walls and antiques in the public areas, but in a way that doesn't seem dated, excellent service made to look easy rather than flustered. Yet mostly it's the little things that make it - such as the complimentary hot cross bun and tea on arrival at Easter, chocolates on your pillow before bed on the first night, occasional invitations to drinks with the owners. I think the big chains such as Marriott etc have a lot to learn from hotels like this. Long may it continue.
If you're the kind of person that prefers buffets to table service, likes music to be playing, and would rather find antiques and open fires in national trust houses, then this isn't for you. Yet if you want to appreciate the quality of a bygone area of hotels, then I would thoroughly recommend.
