“lots of confusion,lots of arguing”
Reviewed 26 May 2009

lots of problems-- wrong room allocated - given room for 3 when room for 4 was booked. After lots of arguing person at desk agreed mistake was made and said would give discount next morning, Next morning another person was at the desk and denied any mistake and refused refund. after lots of arguing she agreed for free dinner at hotel for 1 night.
--- room basic , smelling of cigarette.
--- card key not working, had to go up and down few times and then was given normal key.
---- we went with a group of 8 families and the rooms did vary from new rooms in cellar floor to old spacious rooms and smelly rooms. so its just down to luck I suppose.

Stayed 1 night Friday 22nd may. was booked for 3 nights, but couldnt not stand it. checked out and went to the 4 star AA rated Empire hotel nearly same money.
OK, Grand Hotel is not grand. it looks ok from outside but inside it is very poor. stayed in a standard room, not premier. My guess is that premier rooms are very much nicer than standard.
This hotel is so dated that it probably has not had money spent on it since it was first built in 1908.
Our room had badly painted woodchip wall paper, need i say more?
Well i will, it had an open view drain running down the wall were the bedhead was.
We were on the third floor, but the entertainment on ground floor sounded as if it was in the room with us. did not finish until 1 am. The floor boards creek like hell and you can hear it all over the hotel.
Bathroom was NOT clean. Toilet would not flush. Kettle needed a good dose of cleaning before use. Tea stains down the woodchip wall.
You would stay here if you were poor and didnt know any bettter.
You would not stay here if you have at least been in a decent bedsit, as a decent bedsit is a thousand times better than the grand hotel.
I think this hotel is supposed to be 2 star. however it does not advertise this on the building. I think because it would not achieve it.
I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH BAD THINGS ABOUT THIS HOTEL.
IT WAS THAT BAD.
Read my other reviews to justify my statements.

Booked in at 19 minutes past one, first impressions as we walked into foyer, very tired looking, carpets thread bare & looked unclean, bedroom smelled of stale cigarette smoke and was tiny, nothing like the photoes on the website. However staff on the reception were very pleasent and apolagised. Booked out at 29 minutes past one and booked into another hotel.

We booked this room online, and for some reason the website (brittainia hotels I think) took the Australian times as the booking which changed the dates we needed, which only showed after we paid in full for the room. We had great difficulty sorting this out as they required us to e-mail proof which we did do, but then we had to await an e-mail reply which meant we couldn't start driving to our next accomodation as we had to remain near wifi access. As it happened, they upgraded us and gave us evening meals as well as breakfasts for our two night stay.

The room was lovely with an ocean view and looked straight down onto the bustling pier.

The restaurant was a buffet and the staff ensured all diners had disinfected hands before entering, which was lovely. The staff were lovely and most helpful.

There appeared to be only one internet terminal which was not working while we were there.

Stayed Monday to Friday, had a pleasant room with a balcony overlooking the sea.
The only fault we found was the bed was very lumpy you could feel every spring, we complained to reception and a member of staff brought another duvea to put on top of the bed for us to sleep on, a bit better but still lumpy. room 217
The food was very good and very hot, all the staff very helpfull
We enjoyed our stay and would return again.

I organised a group booking of 51 people through Majestic holidays. Thoroughly enjoyed 5 day holiday and believe all 51 people did too. The only draw back was that one of the lifts was out of use and that meant elderly people had to climb stairs from ballroom to foyer etc. Lift was repaired day before we left. That was only complaint - didn't affect me but was awkward for some who had health problems. Rooms were excellent and food was plentiful and the variety was good.
Entertainment in evening was fine and the keyboard player and drummer were exceptionally good both for dancing, which the majority of the people who travelled with me thoroughly enjoyed, and for accompanying the various singers.
Would definitely visit the Grand again. Most of my party also enjoyed "Stan" on the keyboard in the bar after the ballroom closed. He wasa good laugh and played wel for the singers in my party.
Happy hour was enjoyable with drinks only £1 per pint - marvellous.

Booked only for one night because friends were staying there. Will not go back again. Very creaky floorboards, kettle worked once then died. Shaving point did not work in bathroom. Treated like cattle when going into breakfast. The lay out of the tables left a lot to be desired. The cooked element of breakfast was disgusting also the overstewed tea and coffee.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry some areas of your stay did not meet your expectations. As the hotel is a Victorian building, this sometimes impacts on the maintenance we are able to undertake. However, your comments regarding the electrical appliances have been passed to the relevant department for investigation. Our restaurants are self service and are regularly re-stocked with fresh produce but we understand that personal choice of food is a subjective matter. Feedback is important to us as we use it to further improve our services and standards and we thank you for your comments.
