“Great hotel!”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

Had a lovely stay at the Kensington last week, We arrived early and parked our car at the rear car park after getting the code from reception. Luckily our room was ready which was a bonus so we were able to unpack and settle in. We upgraded to a sea view room which was well worth the extra money. Why go to the seaside if you don't have a view of the sea? Our room was well presented and tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean as was the shower room. There were tea and coffee making facilities which was a boon after our journey down.

We went out for our evening meal to a local Italian bistro which we have been to before and is within easy walking distance of the Kensington. Also within easy walking distance is the Venue Cymru theatre which has some superb shows on throughout the year.

Our breakfast the following morning was first class. Lots of choice including fresh fruit, porridge, kippers, full Welsh breakfast etc.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel and will definitely return again.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a seaview room - well worth the extra money (£14 per room)

A quick short break over the last bank holiday of the year. Hotel overlooked the promenade, and had adequate parking facilities. Room was of good standard with a revamped shower room, which, although small was perfectly adequate. Breakfast was served in an airy dining room, service was quick and efficient. Breakfast choice was the usual cereal, and various cooked alternatives. The hotel looked a bit "tired" in places however it was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Ideally situated to the centre of town and within walking distance of the pier and the tramway. Really nice area to visit and the hotel was perfectly situated.

My partner and I stayed here in august 2014. On arrival check in was very quick and easy and the reception staff were very polite. The room we stayed in was very clean and modern, the shower was powerful with plenty hot water and the bed was very comfortable. Much to our delight when reading the welcome book we discovered the hotel offered a service of making sandwiches to take away with you during the day if you went out and about, they were reasonably priced, however, we did ask for ham and cheese and only got ham which was a bit of a disappointment. Breakfast was well organised you sat at your table and were seen to immediately, the only negative about breakfast is that you couldn't taylor make your cooked breakfast but was nice nonetheless. On our last night we asked at reception for a recommendation for a restaurant and they suggested a restaurant a short walk away called valentino which was delicious. All in all very nice hotel for a short break and would visit again if going to llandudno

We stayed there for 5 nights as part of a package break. The hotel has quite a lot going for it. The location, free parking and free Wi-Fi (albeit not a good signal). The food was good each day and we have no complaint about the food at all, or the serving staff. I have one complaint about the hotel, and/or the booking policy of the travel company. We paid for an upgrade to a sea view room. In reality we were put in an attic room with a part-sloping roof and a small window which you could not see out of without standing up in front of it. Although clean and with a nice bathroom, the room was small with little or no storage space. It seemed obvious that the sea view rooms on floors one and two would be a normal size with larger windows. Whilst many would not object to a small attic room, my view is that when you are paying a premium for the room, if this is what you are going to get, you should be told in advance and given the opportunity to change you mind. I have attached a photo, please note the fan in room is ours, the hotel do not have any.
As others have said the hotel is quite dated and the lift is a struggling antiquity. Using the stairs doesn't give you much confidence. At one end of the hotel they are support only at the wall side and some actually slope down at the outer-edge. Many of the walls are cracked and it is clear that maintenance is an issue.
You also need to be aware that you cannot charge meals or drinks to your room and everything has to be paid for in cash.

Room Tip: If you want a see view only accept rooms on the first and second floor.

We booked this hotel quite late (48hrs) and arrived around 3pm on Saturday 9th August. We entered the hotel from the rear car park, entering the building through a rather dated lower ground entrance and staircase to reception. On arrival at reception the receptionist was pleasant but the desk and surrounded areas were dated and there were exposed power cables with unprotected blocks above tariff sign. We booked in and took the lift to our 3rd floor room which was small but pleasantly furnished and decorated and the bathroom looked like it had been renovated very recently and was expertly and tastefully done. The lift however was extremely slow, noisy, dirty and very poorly maintained internally. I tried to use the free Wi-Fi but found it difficult to maintain a connection as the reception was extremely week, when I questioned this a member of staff who I think may have been the proprietor advised that so.certainly the wind turbines had been erected out at sea the Wi-Fi quality Chad been affected when I asked what the wind farm had to do with we find turbines she stated that in view is was "atsmospheric" and turned her back on choosing to speak with another member of staff. How rude!!! My wife and I went out for an evening meal and when we returned at around 10pm the reception was closed with a sign which stated "ONLY in a real emergency must the reception bell be rung as the reception was closed and would re-open the following morning" My wife and I were quite shocked as it made a clear statement that the staff were off limits unless you had the audacity to fall ill or God forbid die!!. It would be prudent to add as this point that a coach party of "very" elderly OAP's had arrived that day and would like to think that the proprietor(s) would want to give their guests a feeling reassurance rather than instilling a fear of ringing THAT BELL. My wife and I retired to our room and endured a sleepiness night on two of the most uncomfortable mattresses we have had the misfortune to sleep on, you could feel every spring and we both woke up with a feeling that we had lost a kick boxing match such were the aches and pains. We arose a 6am but breakfast was a 1hr window between 8.30 - 9.30, which in our view is insufficient time to feed the amount of residents properly. To be fair they were reasonably proficient but as the cereal and toast was self service there was not a huge amount of pressure on the serving staff. we chose the cooked option and found the portion to be quite and the ingredients were not of the highest quality. Disappointing all round really and would not return.

Arriving around the back of the hotel, my partner and I couldnt get in to the car park. We needed a code to get in... something the receptionist failed to mention over the phone. So we call the front desk, no answer. My partner has to get out of his van and go to reception himself to find out the code. Once he had the code we parked up and went to reception. We were given our room key and we were told where our room was. The lift to the third floor sounded as if it was going to break down any minute and was squeaking and making dreadful noise.
After finding our room (which was relatively easy) we were very disappointed. It was BOILING hot with a tiny window that didn't open wide at all. the mattress was very hard and the TV remote and shower were broken. The view was also awful! It was of the back of a shopping centre!

My fella rang down to reception to inform the lady that the shower was not reaching a hot temperature, they informed us the "handyman" would be with us ASAP. After 15 minutes of waiting the same lady from reception came to our room to take a look at our shower telling us the handyman was unavailable. She could not fix it and didn't know how to anyway as she was not the handy man. We asked her if there was another room we could have as it was quite humid and we couldnt go without a shower. She said she would ask the handyman what he could do (considering he was not available and was just the handyman what would he be able to do?!?!)

Anyway after another 20 minutes of waiting around she returned to tell us that the handyman said we could have another room, there was one room available, sea view but it was a twin room. We took it without viewing as we were very tired and just wanted a shower and to chill out. The lady told us that this room should be more but we wouldn't be charged...The room was nice, clean and the shower worked! It wasn't too hot or cold and we were very glad to have been moved. Even if we did wait for about an hour. But to be totally honest we had paid £80 for the tiny hot broken room.... I dont think the new room was worth more.

We slept fine the beds were comfy and it was quiet. Upon waking we went for breakfast which was extremely dissapointing. Hard bread, very cheap sausage and no smiling staff! I ended up just eating toast.

All comunal areas could have done with a refurb as carpets and furniture are very old and worn. As for entertainment the hotel claims entertainment is supplied "on demand" and according to one guest who watched the caboret on that night... I wouldn't say it was worth watching. They have two bars and a ballroom.

Overall not terrible but I certainly wpuldn't stay here again unless they lowered the price or sorted out their breakfasts!!

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are better

The hotel seemed to be run by staff as there was no evidence of any manager/owner over our weekend stay. The room/bathroom was very good (apart from a sticky substance ingrained in the carpet, and unidentifiable stains on the valances round the beds) but the rest of the hotel is in need of some tlc. We booked in at £180 for a two night stay. We were not asked if we wanted evening meal although there was a sign over reception advising evening meal (no menus)would be £16.50 extra each. The breakfast was ok but the dining room was very depressing, wallpaper peeling of walls and a dirty window with cracked glass to look out of. There were two small lounge/sitting areas neither with televisions. One had old pictures piled in a corner and a dead plant and some old electrical equipment by the window and didn`t smell very nice. There was only one lift and going down a flight of stairs there were some discarded lamps on a shelf. (we found this to be the fire exit way). There was no evening entertainment apparently this is only on when there is demand for it, and the bar area was very small and rarely manned as was the reception desk. The hotel certainly lacked any atmosphere. We will not be visiting this hotel again.
