The Clontarf is, in our opinion, a hidden gem in Llandudno. Having never stayed on the West Shore before we weren’t certain of what to expect but the welcoming and friendly reception we received from Joni and Mark on our arrival was a sign of things to come. They were genuinely interested in us and sat and shared a tray of tea and lots of chat with us in the large comfortable lounge where we found out more about each other.

We were then shown to our rooms, I, my partner and daughter had a large airy bedroom with the most amazing bed (2 individual 3 ft wide mattresses which were electrically adjustable surrounded by a luxurious leather frame). The bedding was the icing on the cake, immaculate white cotton with sumptuous chocolate coloured satin throw and cushions, it looked and, more importantly, felt wonderful. My daughter’s bed appeared from what looked like a massive footstool. No shoddy foam put me up though; it was a metal framed slatted bed with an amazingly comfortable mattress upon which she slept like a baby.

The room in which my partner’s mum stayed was also gorgeous; it was a very romantic turret style room, described by my daughter as perfect for a princess. Again, the décor and bedding were wonderful and we were assured that the bed was amazingly comfortable.

One thing that could not escape you at the Clontarf is how spotlessly clean it is. Joni and Mark have very high standards and that is reflected everywhere. They haven’t owned the hotel very long but have already put their individual stamp on everything. The eclectic mix of antique and contemporary furniture works wonderfully and is a million miles away from the type of mass produced shiny cheap furniture that adorns most hotels.

As for the breakfast, well if you like a good hearty cooked breakfast you will be in paradise! We came downstairs to a wonderful selection of fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals. You could then choose from the cooked breakfast (which you could tailor to suit you tastes) or you could have fresh kippers or a continental style brekky. All fresh locally sourced produce, cooked to perfection with as much tea and toast as you could manage. We didn’t even need to eat again until the evening. Unfortunately we didn’t, during this stay, take advantage of the evening meals on offer as we had made prior arrangements. However, we have no doubt whatsoever that the evening meals would have been just as good as the breakfast and we definitely plan to sample them on our next visit.

Joni and Mark have plans to refurbish the bathrooms (the only tiny negative thing in our opinion). As they stand at the moment they are just a little outdated, but they are spotlessly clean and the showers worked perfectly well so we can’t really find fault at all.

We are looking forward to our next visit and will ensure we book in advance as we are sure that it won’t be too long before this hidden gem is discovered by many more discerning visitors to Llandudno. You would have to go a long way to find a hotel run so thoughtfully by such lovely people. We hope Joni and Mark have continued success, as they certainly deserve it.
