Our stay was just what we need, chill out and relaxing ! Joni and Mark made us most welcome, we arrived early our room wasn't quite ready, we were given our key went for stroll along the prom, on return our bags were in our room. :-) Food was fab and ample, nice to have a choice, full English set us for the day. Room excellent, cleaned / bed made every morning, even the housekeeping staff were pleasant. Most definatly be back Thanks Joni & Mark

At the end of Nov we always have the 'big' family get together as we all have our own plans for the Christmas holidays. That's fine when it's my turn to host, but I just don't have enough beds to accommodate everyone. The Clontaf was brilliant - great hosts, excellent rooms that we're clean, comfortable and had lovely views. The breakfast menu so substantial that I didn't have to worry about catering for them until lunch. Joni & Mark......... You saved my bacon, thank you very much.

We enjoy visiting seaside towns out of season and have been to
Llandudno on more than one occasion. What we have never done
before is stay at a small private hotel/B&B. After referring to the
Clontarf Hotel’s website we looked forward to a short break there
and secured 3 night’s B&B for the price of two. A bit of an off
season bargain in fact.

The Clontarf is located on the West Shore wedged between a small
residential area and the shore itself, well sited for walkers enjoying
the Great Orme and only a 10 minute stroll into the town centre. (OK
it hasn’t moved since the last reviews but we are obliged to set the scene).

On arrival we were welcomed by Mark who offered us a cuppa and
also offered to help us with our bags. Nice touch which we declined
and after a short introduction to the facilities Mark left us to settle in.

Not being at the forefront of how to describe interior décor we are
guessing what Mark & Joni are attempting is a punt at ‘shabby chic’
with the obligatory 3 shades of beige, various scatter cushions and
pieces of distressed furniture. To be fair they seem to pull the look off.

The room itself had a very comfortable bed, well appointed shower
room, a TV/DVD, as much tea, coffee & biscuits as you would like
together with a big comfy sofa situated in a bay window with good views
over the Orme. To describe the space as a room is selling it short really
and you could easily refer to it as a small suite.

After a very restful night we enjoyed the usual array of buffet breakfast
items which were accompanied by tea or coffee and a jug of fruit juice
of your choice. You then had the option of a full cooked breakfast or
any permutation of those items and I think there was even a fishy option
on offer. It must be stated at this point that Mark & Joni do not skimp
on quality and all food served is to a relatively high standard and locally
sourced where it can be.

My only breakfast observation was that my poached eggs
hadn’t been drained properly and my black pudding had edged out
my sausages in a photo finish during a freestyle sprint at the deeper end of the plate. Poached eggs need to be put on kitchen paper and rolled on to the plate I’m afraid but
no big deal in the scheme of things.

On our first morning the hotel breakfast room wasn’t busy and we
had a chat with our hosts and spoke of the difficulties of running
a small business along with some basic B&B economics and the trials
and tribulations associated with building maintenance but this sadly
leads us into some of the concerns we really had with the Clontarf.

In the foyer Mark & Joni display some of the hotel’s attainments some
of which are awarded by Tripadvisor. All good and well but our hosts
don’t seem to react to some of the issues raised in their feedback.

For instance there were some adverse comments made about the net curtains in
the room back in June with photographic evidence into the bargain. Now
net curtains are an abomination irrespective if they are brand new or of the
soiled variety which are still in situ after 6 months and these sadly are now more
shabby than chic. (Distressed furniture fine, distressed nets not fine).

The nets need torn down and disposed of as they detract from the room and
are superfluous as there are a perfectly adequate set of curtains in place. Nets
keep the light out and if the light is a problem just draw the curtains or if
personal privacy is an issue put a dressing gown on. In short get rid of the
net curtains as they detract from the lovely bay window. (Rant over)

Mark also mentioned the previous room configurations and how he remodelled
some of the interior walls. This leads to our observation that this work is clearly
evidenced by the state of the ceiling which looks like a relief map of Outer
Mongolia. This is a shame as you are drawn towards all the ridges and hollows
instead of admiring the quality light fittings. The is a simple fix and a re-skim of
plaster on the ceiling would elevate the room and hide the previous incarnations.

As previously mentioned we enjoy going places out of season and we factor in
that hotels you might stay will inevitability be bit ‘tired’ however some of the
common areas in the Clontarf went beyond that. As an example the skirting
boards in the breakfast room were positively minging as was the door leading
into the kitchen. Instead of waiting to repaint these areas they can be easily
washed down and refreshed to acceptable standard.

There is absolutely no doubt that Mark & Joni are very hard working and
enthusiastic hoteliers who almost deliver a quality product. It’s a pity that they
seem to be drowning in maintenance issues and are allowing certain
things to fester.

I personally would be reviewing their staffing by getting rid of one of the
2 cleaners who tramp through the breakfast room of a morning in favour
of employing the services of a handyman who could help with the cleaning
but simultaneously introduce a tighter and more timely maintenance regime.

We were asked if we enjoyed our stay on leaving and we genuinely had a
lovely time with our convivial hosts but oddly on the way home we could not
decide why we enjoyed ourselves or even if we would recommend to others
or return ourselves in the future.

Maybe it’s us who are at fault as this was our first taste of this type of
establishment and we expected better after being seduced by the website.

Who knows ?

Thank you for your very detailed review. I'm sorry that if after staying with us for 3 nights you couldn't decide whether you enjoyed your stay. I find it difficult places to respond to your review as I think in the effort to make a balanced review it feels contradictory in parts.

I'll try and cover the points which I feel are important. Firstly I'm glad you enjoyed your breakfast. If there was a little water on the plate, I apologise for this, we drain all poached eggs from the pan as best we can, however removing them and handling them with kitchen roll as you suggested would not meet our food standard procedures in place. I'm sorry that the black pudding and sausage were not positioned on the plate to your liking. I am pleased however that you recognised that we use top quality produce with what we offer.

With regards to maintenance. I think the key point that needs to be addressed here is that we are most certainly not drowning in maintenance issues as you suggest! We have a timely programme of maintenance in place already which is well adhered to. You refer to 2 things in particular which is a net curtain and some skirting boards. The net curtains have been replaced 3 times since July, and they are not the same ones as you incorrectly stated. We have exeperienced a very small issue with condensation in this room which we have timetable work for in January, it is not feasable with the noise and dust that this repair couold take place sooner. Our gloss work is painted every 3 years again timetabled for January, There are some scuff round the door between the dining room and the kitchen but the adjective you chose to describe this is totally inappropriate. Scuffs don't clean off, dirt does and our hotel is cleaned to the highest standard weekly by our team of cleaners, of which you suggest I reduce!

It is a shame you were not satisfied with your stay, and that you didn't mention these things when you checked out as we ask if you were happy to gain honest and constructive feedback. As you mentioned in your review we were friendly, chatty and made you feel comfortable through your stay so it would have perhaps been more sensible to bring these issues up before or during payment was made, as I believe you had ample opportunity. Thank you for your business and I hope you will try us again in the future.

Great little hotel. Had everything I wanted - beautiful room with a big comfortable bed and good quality furnishings. Nice big tv, l'occitane toiletries and even a free cat, who sneaked into our room when we were shown in and was so cute we let her stay! It's in a nice location near West Shore beach, and an easy walk from the centre of town. The hosts, Mark and Joni are absolutely lovely and made sure we were well looked after. I'd definitely recommend it!

We checked this hotel out via Tripadvisor and decided to go for it. Thank goodness we did!!!!

Every member of staff and Management were extremely helpful and went the extra mile to ensure our stay was memorable ......they succeeded.

I asked for flowers in the room, we got them. I asked for Champagne in the room, we got it. When we decided against the Champagne it was not a problem.

It was quiet throughout and the Lounge area was great to just sit and read or (as we did) enjoy a good glass of Port from the honesty bar.

Joni and her husband are great hosts and Betty (our dog) was made really welcome.

THANKS TO ALL AT THE CLONTARF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stayed for 3 nights in Peony Room - Superior Double with a partial sea view . The room was stylish, clean & warm and had a wonderful en-suite shower room with constant Hot water .
Mark & Joni were very friendly and welcoming .
The Clontarf is situated in a great location near the West Beach perfect for a walk round the Great Orme ( needed if you partake of the Full Welsh Breakfast ! ) and approx.10mins into Town Centre.
There is plenty of on-street parking available which is a bonus in Llandudno.
We would definitely stay here again.
