“Its All in the Presentation”

It becomes obvious that many of the guests are regular visitors to this small and beautifully decorated hotel. The owners are thoughtful ex-theatre guys and each member of staff checks back to ensure your smile is still working. The beach is across the road and walks for all abilities exist - even a wheelchair push along the beautiful Georgian terrace of Mostyn Crescent - the hotel has a lift. My dog found the owners particularly friendly. We had the cast of "The Importance....." ( at Venue Cymru 200 metres away ) back for a free drink - they smiled broadly as well. Well done Dave, Michael & Helen.

We have stayed in Llandudno on several occasions but this by far is the best hotel we have stayed at.
The rooms are spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated and very comfortable with great attention to detail.
Michael and David are the perfect hosts and you feel as if you are staying in their home as friends, rather than in an hotel as guests.
The food was plentiful and beautifully cooked and served. We opted each evening for the bar meal and it was real value for money and delicious.

All in all a relaxing and pleasant experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

This hotel is in an excellent location on the front, within walking distance of the town centre.

However, we booked our weekend here on the strength of others' reviews on Tripadvisor. We were certainly disappointed to find that we were in the smallest most dated room we have ever stayed in. There was a view of the bay (but you had to bend down to see it through the tiny attic window). The room had blown vinyl wallpaper, the tv screen was as small as my laptop and the bathroom was very basic indeed and other than the excellent location I have nothing more positive to say about the hotel.

Perhaps some of the other rooms are more modern but the attic room we were allocated was certainly a disappointment.

Room Tip: Don't accept the attic room!

RoloNorthWales, Owner at Can-y-Bae, responded to this review, 11 April 2013
At Can-Y-Bae we are always grateful to our guests for taking the time to post a review on TripAdvisor and we are, of course, delighted that so many of our guests enjoy their stay and return to us. Whether it is the style of our service, the cental location we enjoy on the sea-front promenade or the quirky, individual nature of the building itself we enjoy welcoming return guests again and again.
With this in mind we were disappointed to read this review; sadly by not making any mention of the points raised in the review during your stay (thus allowing us the opportunity to remedy the situation whilst you were staying with us) and by posting the review some 6 months after your stay, we are left in a position which only allows us to address the points raised on this forum.

With regard to the dimensions of the room we actively mention in our publicity and marketing material that Can-Y-Bae was built originally as a sea-side holiday retreat rather than hotel accommodation and as such (along with most hotels in Llandudno) all our bedrooms differ in size and shape. At the time of constuction in 1861, it was and still is I believe, architecturally acceptable to have larger sized windows on lower floor levels with windows becoming smaller in size towards the top of the building - however, we feel we should point out that we do not utilize our attic space for guest accommodation; indeed this area has never provided accommodation for visitors.
The room, we believe, you stayed in whilst retaining as many original features as possible was fully refitted in 2012 and is furnished in a contemporary style with waxed solid wood furniture, neutral coloured walls and is newly carpeted - with splashes of colour provided by framed contemporary prints.
The bathroom is fitted with a full sized bath, shower, W.C. & hand wash basin (all in white), lit by both ceiling light and shaving light above the mirror, complemented by a slate tiled floor.
All of our bedrooms (including this one) in addition to complimentary refreshments and mineral water, are provided with direct dial telephone, Free Wi-Fi access, flatscreen TV with freeview, hairdryer, trouser press, iron & ironing board and a range of luxury toiletries - with all due respect, we do not consider these facilities to be basic.
At Can-Y-Bae we have a continuing programme of renovation (within the restrictions applied to Grade II listed buildings within a conservation area). We continue to aim to provide the facilities contemporary travellers have a right to expect whilst enjoying the quirky Victorian charm of the building as well as the resort of Llandudno.
We can only apologise if you found the style of accommodation, the facilities we offer and the architectural style of the building not to your personal taste - it has never been our intention to emulate the somewhat regimented style of some of the larger chains of International hotels.
We would respectfully suggest that Can-Y-Bae's intention is to provide an escape from busy everyday life by offering Victorian values in the service we provide to our guests with the addition of a contemporary twist (as it has for more than one and a half centuries) in the elegance of a somewhat quirky Victorian sea-side residence.

The perfect place to stay in Llandudno! Brilliant location right on the sea front, extremely accommodating owners who gave great advice about what to do and where to eat, lovely rooms and a delicious breakfast - what more could you ask for?! Would definitely stay again and will be recommending to friends and family!

A fantastic hotel right on the seafront. When we arrived we were met by Michael and Dave who were extremely welcoming -Michael even took my bag to the room! The bed was very comfy -I didn't want to get out of it for breakfast but I am glad I did as breakfast was delicious! Whilst we were there, Dave recommended many restaurants and pubs: he even rang them and booked a table for us! As a result, we had some scrumptious meals! The owners catered for everything we wanted -even offering to make me a mulled wine when I asked for one in April!
I will definitely stay at Can-y-Bae next time I visit Llandudno. But next time I will take my dog, as I am sure he will want to meet Rolo (the owners dog).
Thanks for a brilliant break away -just what I needed!

This was a very good place to stay: the owners were welcoming, helpful and friendly; the hotel was clean, smart and interesting; the food was hot, plentiful and delicious. All of this is the mark of a good hotel, but here there was more: the owners seemed genuinely concerned that I was having an uncomfortable stay at a nearby hotel; their recommendations for where to eat out in the evening were thoughtful and spot on; the obvious delight of all the other guests who were staying there created an atmosphere which was bliss. Many thanks.
