Owner description: Every week at the Jerwood DanceHouse on the Ipswich Waterfront, we host over 50 dance classes and courses in our world-class dance studios. Covering a huge variety of styles, for all ages and abilities, including contemporary, creative, zumba, tots & co, adult ballet, tap and musical theatre to name just a few! DanceEast is so much more than what is presented in the theatre - we bring dance to people in schools, hospices and sheltered housing. Working with people from all walks of life; from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with special needs, we're privileged to see how dance changes lives every day. DanceEast delivers ground-breaking work through projects working with 'looked after' children and those at risk, as well as children in hospitals and older people in care homes, offering them all the opportunity to use dance for creative expression and physical and psychological therapy. Dance can energise, motivate, encourage creative thinking, and develop expressive minds and healthy bodies.

“Jerwood Dance House”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2013

The Dance House has now been open for about 5 years. It has several "strings to its bow": dance classes of many kinds for all ages, a professional-level Dance Academy, and public performances by both students and professionals. Its "Rough Cuts" programmes offer a chance to see the latest choreographers' works as they are being developed - these are very cheap. Although there are several studios, the heart of the House is a well-equipped 200-seat "black box" studio theatre which offers a very intimate setting for performances.

We have seen two performances recently: "Power Games" by "Altered Skin" and "Freedom" by the Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company. The first was a new work which, in my opinion, a good idea which needed further development. However the second was a return visit by a top-flight professional company who have performed around Britain. on the Continent and in the US. This was a stunning fully-worked out production which premiered at Sadler's Wells and has been in several venues since. "Pretty ballet" it is not, however it is modern dance of high quality which is seeking to ask profound questions. (And much cheaper than London prices!)

It is sad that the dance audience in Suffolk does not make more use of this excellent centre. That may be because it is at the "wrong end" of the Waterfront development in Ipswich (a somewhat unprepossessing part of town) or because it is not generally offering a "populist" product. However it is convenient for the University and the new Premier Inn; Ipswich is lucky to have it!

In terms of the House itself, its style is less architecturally inviting than the Wolsey Theatre (though the Atrium features an amazing light fitting made out of ballet tutus!) There is a small bar which opens for performances, an excellent (but not specifically dance-related) gift shop called "Cake and Catwalk", and an attached café which is open every day all day and features regular jazz nights and book clubs. I have not used the café recently; on earlier visits the range of food was somewhat limited, the coffee excellent and the service somewhat slow.

There is (paid-for) parking on the Waterfront and also some free spaces nearby - to be precise, no-one quite seems to know if they are free or not but no-one ever seems to get a ticket! There is also indoors parking at "The Mill" but this is not generally recommended as it is primarily for its residents and somewhat confusing.

“Love it!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 March 2013

I love this place. It's so great. I just wish there were more lights etc when you come out of this place. As a woman alone, it would be nice if it felt a little safer. Classes are great here though!

“Saturday Morning Yoga - Brilliant.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2013

The yoga class takes place in the Ashton studio, which is very bright, clean and spacious. The class runs from 9:30-10:45am and provides enough time without feeling rushed. The cost is £5.

The class caters for a range of abilities from beginners to experts. Most poses can be modified to either make them more easy or difficult, which means everyone can have a go at every pose. The teacher is very enthusiastic & offers help where needed without making you feel picked on.

On an average week I would estimate between 15-20 people attend. The majority are females and the age range is broad.

All in all, it's a good way to start the weekend & it leaves you feeling relaxed. Highly recommended!

“Hip Hop tastic”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2012

Visited today to watch Hip Hop and Street Dance show by visiting Blue Boy Entertainment. Fantastic show and lovely theatre space. Lunch in the cafe was good and staff were very friendly throughout. Only downside is inadequate parking but this is a fantastic dance studio and as good as anything I have seen in larger cities.

“Out of the ordinary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 December 2012

The Dance East building is gorgeous; the studios light and spacious and the cafe is a lovely place to spend time. Plus the shop Cake and Catwalk which is very reasonable and full of pretty things. I've been to dance performances there too. We're lucky to have this in Ipswich.
