Nowhere else in Ipswich makes coffee like Caffe Basso - it is proper Italian espresso, made from a shiny, well-maintained, professional machine that takes pride of place behind the counter. The double espresso and regular cappuccino are both superb - with regards to the latter, this is proper cappuccino with a finely balanced combination of milk and foam, not the overly 'wet' cappuccinos produced virtually everywhere else. It is fairly obvious that the baristas here have a wealth of experience, and each cup of coffee is produced with pride and genuine craftsmanship. The espresso has a great crema, rich body and a finely-tuned bitterness. Do not ruin it with sugar!
The coffee is so good that it is simply an added bonus that everything else is also wonderful - Basso is light, airy and the window seats provide a good vantage point for people watching. The food is also top notch and the pizzas and other breads are produced fresh on the premises daily in authentic pizza ovens. The pizza by the slice is excellent, as is the focaccia and ciabatta. Try a bacon roll with an olive ciabatta. Before I decided to lose weight, I used to enjoy the homemade almond croissants (though these are often sold out by 10am!) Freshly made pasta is also available with a range of sauces. For pudding, there are ice creams and cakes.
The cafe is licensed and there is a shelf with a range of weird Italian aperitifs. On hot days, it is nice to get a cold bottle of Peroni and sit at one of the outdoor tables.
For added authenticity, Italian radio plays in the background. There is also free WiFi (ask for the password).
Finally, the service here is wonderful - the quality of the espresso means I have become a 'regular' , but the staff are welcoming to everybody who comes in. The cafe can appear a little small from the outside, but if you have a buggy or pram, they will find a way to fit you in! Children are more than welcome.
All in all, it is good to see a place like this in Ipswich - strongly independent and excellent quality. It is a shame about the owner's fake tan, yes, but he can't rely on the Ipswich weather to get a real one!
