“This place is well up to speed now”
Reviewed 18 April 2013

Stayed here with my wife on our annual tour of places we haven't been to before. 944 miles in 2 weeks in the coldest April in living memory. Did we have fun?.....well not quite but it was a good break very interesting too.

I only found this Premier by accident because it wasn't showing on the trip advisor hotel site at the time. I prefer to stay as close as I can to town and this is definitely the place for that. As I type this review I notice that a spellcheck in now incorporated as well, so well done to TA or Microsoft whoever is responsible. The only trouble we had was that my satnav had us going around in circles near to the end of our journey. If we had followed the instructions from Premier we would have avoided that. The onsite car park is a boon, and free too (make sure you drive through the public one to the Premier barrier).

Once inside it's pure Premier, a delight to behold. There is a lift too, what a pleasure. Check in was easy and our room was fine. You can sometimes find that only one set of towels have been provided (as we did this time) but a quick tel. call to reception will soon put that right. Had we have been staying longer than our one night we would have tried dinner in the restaurant called The Kitchen (Italian themed) but we had a reservation at The Townhouse, just 5 minutes walk away (see TAs restaurant list). Get a street map from reception to see how easy it is. We did have a very good night's sleep, as expected, and the next morning I had the Premier full English breakfast and my wife had the continental (there are 2 different prices). Finally a quick thanks to; Katy, Chanel and Matt for looking after us so well.

Cashpoint style check in displays your personal details to all and sundry. First room the air conditioning was noisy and could not be switched off. Moved to another room with a loud extractor fan which carried on for almost an hour, so didn't dare switch on the bathroom light, resulting in no bath or shower and we were too tired to move rooms again. No yoghurt available at breakfast, despite being well advertised. HOWEVER, our complaints were dealt with professionally and we were refunded accommodation AND breakfast charges.

Firstly, this is a brand new hotel which had been operational for 10 days when we stayed on Good Friday. The check in was swift using the self check in and staff were courteous and helpful.

The room, as you would expect from this brand, was extremely comfortable and more than met the good night guarantee. Just one niggle and something which now applies to the whole brand is that only one hand towel is allocated per room. After using it post hair wash it was too wet to be of any use. Reception kindly provided another without a problem, just a sign of Premier Inn looking to cut costs.

This hotel has an onsite restaurant/bar called the kitchen, a new concept for PI with just four at present in town centre locations. It's all table service be it coffee, drinks or food all served from a small area next to the kitchen. The menu is sparse and Italian in style with pizza and pasta offering just three or four variations. In addition there was a chicken gnocchi and grilled salmon. Unfortunately the chicken was off so I opted for the salmon and my husband the meatballs. Both were cooked well and along with the salad bar bowl made a filling and tasty meal. We ordered a tear and share foccacia for starters which was disappointing as it consisted of just 3 tiny pieces which if they had been torn would have disappeared!! We asked our server why PI had opted for a menu which offered so little choice and the answer was there are restaurants across the road on the Quay for those looking for more traditional food... as we were one of only three tables occupied I guess the restaurants across the road were taking advantage of the guests cash that evening! Our meal was over and done with within an hour so we went across to the Quays for a drink to round off our evening.

Now if you have got this far you might think we would not contemplate going there again, however it served our purpose for one night and we would not rule it out in the future but we would give the in house restaurant a miss.

Room Tip: Rooms are well glazed and you don't hear the traffic from the busy road outside.
