“Very average”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

Ate here this week and found the food no more than average. The dated interior didn't particularly put us off as everything was clean and tidy. The food however was disappointing and lacked the punch you expect in Thai food, not just heat but spicing. We ordered Thai green curry and asked for medium heat (Thai hot is HOT) but there was barely any heat at all! Tom Yum soup, again ordered medium heat, was better. Duck dish with tamarind sauce pleasant but not worth £13. The quality of ingredients was fine but the cooking lacked refinement. The dessert menu perhaps gave the clue as to how the restaurant is focussed - pre-made desserts, no mango sticky rice. The only Thai dessert was a coconut custard which tasted marginally better than it looked. At £27 per head with two drinks and service, unfortunately not worth the money.

Have been to Thailand lots of times and know you'll never completely replicate what you eat there here, but pretty disappointing overall, as we thought we'd finally found a good Thai restaurant in the area and so wanted to like it.

“Amazing Food! - Top Ipswich Restaurant”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

Authentic, freshly cooked, delicious Thai food. Superb choice and portion sizes are just right. Excellent choice of wines and beers to accompany your meal. (Chilled Singha or Tiger beers are a personal favourite!). Coffee following the meal highly recommended too.

Clean, crisp table linen and simple surroundings provide a perfect base for an outstanding meal.

The owner is helpful, polite and service is very efficient.

The Baipo far outweighs any other Thai restaurants we've tried. When dining in Ipswich we would choose the Baipo every time (and have done so many times over the years!)

“Totally surprised!”
Reviewed 22 September 2013 via mobile

I wasn't expecting a lot from Baipo, the exterior and interior are pretty dated. How wrong I was, it is like all the little restaurants in Thailand. The matsaman curry sauce was actually quite bland, but the beef cooked in it was incredible! Clearly the beef is high quality and it carried the dish. The phad Thai was quite average but nice. The pad phrick was really nice, the taste of the chilli was great. As any standard Thai restaurant should it had Chang and singha beer but having it on draught rather than bottle would have been nice. The staff were pretty friendly and not too fussy. Would definitely go back.

“Best restaurant in Ipswich by far!!”
Reviewed 17 August 2013

No way is this place no. 68 out of 207 restaurants in Ipswich!! This is an absolute gem!!

The best Thai restaurant in Suffolk, let alone Ipswich! Yes the decor is a little bit dated, but the food make up for that in the bucket loads!!

Baipo recommends for starters is all ways a winner!! Followed by crispy noodles, Thai green curry, weeping tiger, chicken with chilli and basil, bean sprouts, rice, oh and maybe steak with peanut sauce!!

The owner takes a little while to get used to, but he always remembers his regulars and treats them well!!

“Birthday treat!”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

Since the highly publicised economic downturn we haven't eaten out much... But given it was my 40th birthday we decided to splash the cash and I have never had a bad meal here spanning a 10 year period.
Yes, the decor is dated, tired.... Just like some of the reviews say below. There is no 'mood lighting' or intimate booths to enhance your experience. BUT the owner remembers you...even if its been a year between visits. He even knows what starter you are goin to order and what wine you like. The food never disappoints and is by far the most authentic Thai cuisine I have tasted.

I would say there is no style over content in this restaurant ..... Just heaps and heaps of tasty, gorgeous Thai food served hot, in good time and by people that care about the food.

It is quite expensive, but I would choose this place over any other.

My top 2 rated places to eat in Ipswich align with reviews on Trip Advisor, Kesgrave Hall and The Salthouse. Both of these places have a mix of good looks and great food. The Baipo should be 3rd for its simplicity and quality of food.

Trouble is..... Once you have eaten thier mixed starters and Weeping Tiger you just want MORE MORE MORE.... I ate it on Friday 2nd August and everything else I have eaten since pales miserably. I've been spoilt.

Try it. It's a beautiful thing. :0)
