Having read most if the reviews I want to make a few things clear to the anti reviews. I have stayed at the Roebuck on many, many occasions. All of the staff are incredibly friendly, always serving the public with a smile, even when they are obviously rushed off of their feet, attending to other duties for example serving in the bar, reception or attending to demanding customers in the restaurant. I think people should accept that often hotels are undermanned due to illness ( believe me I stay in hotels all over the UK, from Holiday Inns to Marriots and have experienced similar problems), so lighten up on the level of service, as I mentioned it's always with a smile.
The building maybe a little tired looking, it is over 500 years old, what do people expect in an old and listed building, the floors will creak in areas, doesn't that add to the experience?
Now on to the food, and being brought up in the Birmingham area for most of my life I have been all but spoiled when it comes to Indian cuisine, but hey, this In house Indian ( The Nirvana), served the best I have ever eaten, you won't get a madras, a vindaloo or a korma, yes people this is TRADITIONAL Indian food, amazing. If you want it hotter just request it on ordering and chef will oblige. In terms of other cuisine available, I've never had any complaints, and chef does the most amazing and freshly prepared pizzas - not frozen and nuked in the oven as I've experienced at previously mentioned hotels, and the breakfast is a good old traditional English all fresh and not sat on an overheated hot trolley as you get in most hotels these days.
The staff, Andrew, Susan, Tom to name but a few should be rewarded for their hard work and constantly smiling.
For the record, I now live in Stevenage and the Inn has become my local, traditional, a mix of nice people, I've never seen trouble and don't expect I ever will. I still stay on the odd occasion I like it that much.

Stayed on business for two nights. Very dated hotel and accommodation. Staff were all pleasant and efficient. Bar was like going back 30 years!, food - Indian menu good _ English not so. Breakfast ordinary. Not much more to say, but won't go back

The hotel looks quite dated but the rooms are quite large and well maintained. The plus point off the hotel is the inhouse Indian restaurant serving authentic Indian food which was excellent and not expensive added with professional serving staff who were on their toes. Overall enjoyed staying here and will come back.

Arrived at the hotel to find graphic pornography playing on the recpetion computer in full site of anybody walking in the reception area. Eventually managed to find somebody to do something about it but no explanation at all from anybody, no apology or nothing! Didn't stay and booked in elsewhere. Best Wester Customer Services were not much better, contacted them the following day and there was no recognotion that this was a serious issue only a few comments of 'never had one of them complaints before'!!!

Hello Mike

With reference to your feedback, i would like to clarify that this was an foolish act done done by a passerby who came into the reception desk while the reception staff was handling a guest request in our next door restaurant, this passerby committed this idiotic act and put the pornographic video on the reception computer.

To ensure that this act is not repeated we have also put auto screen saver where no one can log in to our computer with out password after 10 seconds.

We did report this incident to the police and have submitted the CCTV evidence of the same.

Kind Regards
Vijay

As we entered the hotel reception there was nobody in attendance. To our disgust there was graphic pornography playing on the reception computer screen which was in full view of anybody that walked in the reception area. We were finally able to bring this to the attention of one of the staff who eventually was able to turn off the video but all of the time there was families waling through the area. The issue was brought to the attention of Tom the Manager who could say nothing apart from it was 'YouTube'. We were both disgusted and lost for words and decided straight away that we did not want to stay there for the night and cancelled our reservation and stayed at the Premier Inn down the road. To make matters worse, we rang Best Western Customer Services the following morning to report the issue and although it was accepted that we had seen what we had seen the Customer Services representative made a bit of a joke about it and didn't seem to understand the seriousness of the issue. We will never be staying at a Best Western again because of this as they obviously don't have the right attitude towards their Customers!!!

As soon as we arrived at this hotel there was a polite caring and friendly welcome from the receptionist and found as we requested we could have an early check in which was beneficial to our plans.
Yes the rooms were a little tired but they were decent sized single rooms with plenty of milk, tea and coffee, which is unusual, even the top hotels skimp on this.
The bar staff were friendly and although there was a limited amount of draught ale available it was well kept.
Breakfast was excellent with once again a pleasant waitress.
Made a change to stay in a hotel where the staff were naturally friendly and everything you needed was to hand.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor were good with easy access to car park for unloading/loading
