Dear you lot,
thank you very much for everything.
The stay with you was excellent. A nice and spacious room, a lovely breakfast and a splendid meal.
Although there is a busy road one does not hear any sound because of the double-glazed windows.
It was also nice to talk to you and the locals. Thanks for the help.
I will definitely come back!!!
Stay well, best wishes, Sonja

As it says in the title, traditional roadside Inn's offering bed and breakfast are getting harder and harder to find these days. Most have been taken over by the large breweries and modernised within an inch of their lives. Not so The Chequer's Inn, which maintains a mid 20th century charm about it.

The Inn offers five rooms, I suspect not all are en suite, as their is a communal shower room and toilet on the first floor. Room 1, which is called a twin but offers a king size double and single was what I was offered. The room was basic in it's fittings but very comfortable, warm, extremely clean and had full ensuite facilities. Tea and coffee was provided, alarm clock and TV with the four terrestrial channels. The double bed was extremely comfortable and I slept well, unusually for myself.

The Inn has a bar and restaurant, again with traditional furniture and fittings. It was nice to be able to relax over a pint of real ale among regulars who could talk freely without the hinderance of loud music. The is a large open fire in the middle of the bar which I could imagine roaring away in mid winter, although thankfully not lit in the unseasonably warm spell we had last week. Tucked away in the corner was another rarity for a pub these days. A genuine bar billiards table. I've not seen one in a pub for many years and it seems to be popular and well used, a great alternative to the pool table for a pub with limited space.

I didn't try the restaurant as it had closed by the time I arrived. Last orders is normally around 20.30 and it is closed on Mondays. If the food is of the same quality as that served at breakfast however, I would like to get there earlier and try it on my next visit. A good, hearty, tradition (there's that word again) English breakfast which kept me going until well into the evening after a busy day.

The Inn is relatively easy to find from junctions 6 and 7 on the
A1(M). Although tripadvisor gives the address as Stevenage, it is in fact in the village of Woolmer Green, south of Knebworth on the B197. Follow signs for Knebworth until you get to Woolmer Green and you can't go wrong.

This place is ideal for anyone not wanting the expense of hotels in London, but with easy access to London. Rather than take the car into London and rack up the congestion charges, parking etc, stay here for the night, then do the 30 minute driver to Totteridge and Whetstone tube station (A1M then A1000). £2.20 a day parking and £5.90 day return to get you into the heart of London.
