“Disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2013

This is supposedly a 4star hotel. I would rate it as 1.5. Room was fine at first glance then you saw the chipped paintwork on the pipes and woodwork. Dirt was found behind bathroom taps. A draught like a force 9 came from the close bathroom window, making the leisurely bath more like a cold channel swim. Noise of water pipe in wall was like water treatment that went on all night.
Food was nouvelle cuisine ( do they not know it went out of fashion years ago) and the choice was limited. Normally we travel Europe and research our hotels and have stayed in some of the best 5 stars, but this was a gift from our. Daughter. Would much rather have stayed at a Butlins holiday camp (never have) but it could not have been any worse and probably would have been much better.

Room Tip: See if they have one that has been modernised,

The hotel was very clean and in a beautiful location. The only downside i would comment on is the fact that the room we were given had no heating. There were radiators which did not work. After speaking to reception, they did supply a heater and said that maintenance would call the next day to get the radiators working. This did not materialize and another heater was supplied. On the whole the Hotel was wonderful, meals were excellent with a wide choice for both breakfast and evening meals. The pool and spa were clean and very relaxing.

Thank you Diane S for your review, we are pleased that you enjoyed our hotel, but we are sorry that the heating situation was not adequately resolved in the time that you were with us. We hope it did not hamper your stay too much.

I stayed here a couple of years ago on the recommendation of a local. I spent 3 nights there on a business trip. I had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay indeed. After a stressful day, I would return to my room sit on the small balcony and enjoy a cup of herbal tea as I watched the chain ferry pulled back and forth across the harbour. Beautiful views. Having gathered my thoughts I then set down to work for a couple of hours, before ordering room service dinner every night, always a tasty and substantial meal. Staff were very pleasant and accommodating. Although there for business, I would go back with my family if in the area purely for pleasure.

Room Tip: Get a room with a harbour view.

I am a child and I'm 10 and I really enjoyed it. They, have a wide range of food at breakfast including cooked food and cereal. We are a family of three, me my Dad and my Mum, in the daytime we went to Corfe castle, the motor museum, the tank museum and Portland and they are all under an hour drive from the Haven. We recommend rooms: 142, 121 and 221 all of them have fantastic sea views so if you can try and get those. This time we stayed in room 142 and we have stayed in the other two rooms before. The food is very good and the hotel is very welcome to walk into after a long drive.

Me and my family all really enjoyed this hotel and we cannot wait to come back soon!

Although, staff was very friendly, food in the restaurant was good, the overall impression was not 4 star. We had a marvelous seaview, but the room was standard. Only one chair to sit on (my bugbear really, why double room with only one chair!). For the price we paid, nearly £180 a night, I expected luxury. Maybe even a handtowel! All a bit grubby. Second night we would have liked to eat outside the restaurant, but bar with proper tables was full, only sofas. So we had to eat in the room, one perched on the bed. Shame really, this was supposed to be our pamper ourselves weekend. Overall, dated hotel.

Thank you for your review Olga-in-the-corner, we are glad that you enjoyed our view and food. It appears you came into the bar area during a busy period and were unable to find a table. You can always speak to our staff to ask were other seating options are available, as there are plenty of areas which would still have room such as the glass bar at the end of our La Roche restaurant. Our staff would be happy to point out the way for you next time.
If you have any further queries, please do get in touch.

Have just read previous reviews and maybe this would be great if you paid groupon prices.
The Good
The location is superb and the views from the harbour side and sea side rooms are stunning.
Most of the staff are very helpful and I like the way when you meet them in the corridors they always speak and smile.
Breakfasts are wonderful and the view from the breakfast dining room has to be one of the best in England.
Hospitality tray in the room was excellent.
The not so good
We booked well in advance, harbour view with balcony, and it was not cheap. The first room we were given, room 125, had the smallest bathroom I have ever been in. The door was a cupboard door with a latch to lock and the doors did not even meet in the middle so that you could sit on the toilet and see the bed through the gap in the middle. I went to reception and asked for another room and we were given the one next door, 124. This at least had a slightly bigger bathroom with a proper door but why did they not give us that room in the first place?
Was it being saved for a last minute booking?
The radiator in this second bedroom was cold, although on maximum and as it was a bitterly cold day the room was freezing. I phoned reception and was told by a girl that the heating was on a timer and would not come on for another 2 hours at 6pm. We are not used to complaining in hotels and don't like doing so and by this time I was ready to go home. A very kind member of staff who we met in the corridor came and looked at the radiator and discovered that a valve had been turned off. Within seconds it was piping hot.
The male staff behind the bar were arrogant and not helpful.
The food in the restaurant was good in parts. There are 4 main course options and both nights we stayed there the vegetarian dish was risotto. I chose this on the second evening and it was just a bowl of warm rice covered in rocket leaves so essentially I paid £22 for a bowl of soup (delicious) and some rice which I just could not finish.
My other criticism would be that when we checked in we were not told any meal times and there was no information in the room and the spa and pool were not even mentioned.
I would stay here again because of the location but it advertises itself as a 4 star hotel and there are too many niggles to justify that for me and if you do not get a deal it is not cheap.

Room Tip: See the room before you unpack!

We stayed at the Haven on Saturday with a groupon offer and it was well worth the money. The hotel is set within beautiful houses and right on the beautiful sandy beach. Staff were very helpful rooms very large and warm especially how cold it was on Saturday ! We ate in the restaurant in the evening and it was very tasty and good value. We also had a free bottle of wine in our room when we arrived. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and especially if you can get it with a Groupon offer.
