“Great staff, hotel needs investment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2013

We have visited The Haven on many occasions since holding our wedding reception there many years ago, and have always been very impressed. However our latest visit which was for an event wasn't up to their usual standard.

The staff are very helpful and welcoming, and the reception area is lovely. We had a standard room which is comfortable and clean, but starting to show signs of wear. The instructions for the television didn't work. We were also just by an internal fire door which was continually banging as people went through it.

Dinner was OK - usually the food at the Haven is excellent, but on this occasion it failed to meet our expectations. There were a lot of us which could be the reason why but equally we would have expected better for the money that was charged.

We were also woken early on a Sunday morning by a delivery lorry (reversing noises, boxes being thrown about) and while I understand that deliveries cannot always be planned around sociable hours, it was annoying to say the least.

Other FJB hotels such as Harbour Heights are fantastic, but they have had investment in them recently to maintain the high standard you'd expect from the chain. I think its about time the Haven received this treatment too.

A lovely hotel with views to die for. Visited with party of friends for weekend. Service, food, accommodation five star. Staff very polite and helpful. Nothing too much trouble. Room includes private safe. Really enjoyed the stay.

Room Tip: Choose balcony room with a view of the sea. Love to buy the view for home.

Many years ago we used to take my mother to the restaurant at The Haven for Sunday lunch and had always said that one day we would stay there and enjoy its great views and facilities. Thanks to an offer in the Daily Telegraph we were able to do this.
On the plus side the room was fine and the bed was comfortable. The breakfast buffet was on the whole good and reasonably hot. It provided a good range of food and the cooked items were kept warmer than we have encountered in some other establishments. The dishes were also refreshed and replaced regularly.
The minuses mostly concerned the wifi which was non existent in our room. This meant that a visit to the reception area was required each time we needed to use our IPad. Whilst this was not a massive problem for us it might annoy a business customer, a category of guest that the hotel is keen to attract. The instructions for use of the television which were attached to the set were complete nonsense. This was demonstrated when a member of the staff came up and turned it on using a procedure completely at variance with the "instructions"! The trendy Philips radio on the wall seemed unable to pick up any sort of consistent signal. These faults are not what would expect in a hotel of this standing
The members of staff on reception and in the restaurant were all charming and helpful. We particularly enjoyed meeting Conor and Emil in the restaurant.
We have given a marking of very good because of the plus points which made our stay enjoyable. However anyone intending to stay at the Haven who needs good communication facilities would, need to make sure that their room is in a area where good wifi reception at least is available.

we had booked with this hotel for our 25th wedding anniversary, on arrival we found out that they completely messed up our room booking, we were shown to a room that I can only describe as a "family room" something that I had not booked, it overlooked a rather dirty glass cover of a restaurant (noise and smells, not conducive to a romantic break).
We were told that we would have to reserve a table for dinner, and we had planned on eating on the terrace, (one of the reasons for booking this hotel) so that we could have a nice meal overlooking the water to celebrate our anniversary. We went to speak to a lady to reserve this, and were told quite bluntly, that we couldn’t as "it was windy and they would not be using the terrace for food" as it was actually a very nice evening and only a little breezy this was a bit of a surprise, considering we were by the sea, we expected it to be a little windy. This along with the change of room, completely spoilt our day, we had taken a long time in deciding which hotel to stay at, and felt that we had been let down, the staff at the reception desk knew they had messed up, just by the way that dealt with us, they didn’t even have the decency to offer an apology. They knew it was our silver wedding anniversary and couldn't have cared less. We checked out and stayed at a lovely hotel in Bournemouth where the staff couldn’t do enough for us.

We visited this hotel two years ago due to its impressive location. On our return, the hotel staff were very welcoming and had a record of our previous stay. We requested a sea view room and happily enjoyed watching the boats passing by and, as previous reviewers have mentioned, found it very pleasant to leave the balcony door ajar overnight to hear the waves below our room. The room was adequate but a little tired and ready for a revamp. You also needed a degree to work the TV and had to have a member of the guest services staff come to our room twice during our overnight stay to demonstrate how to turn it on! We have a sophisticated TV at home and stay in numerous hotels around the world without any problems with technology. The double bed was extremely soft and was best described as a marshmallow! Breakfast was fine but a little bit like a canteen - full English and continental options available. The hotel is certainly favoured by the older/retired generation - I think we brought the age average down at breakfast by a decade or two (we are 44 & 53). Other reviewers mentioned difficulties in parking - we returned to the car park on 3 occasions during our overnight stay and had no issues with finding a parking space. One last little niggle was the £7.95 price of an egg mayonnaise sandwich served in value-type sliced bread - hardly 4 star food! If we find ourselves back in the Sandbanks/Poole area again, we will probably try another hotel - I do think it would struggle to get its 4 star rating if it was reviewed today.

My wife and I had a wonderful time staying at this hotel. It was so relaxing in the spa and would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to get away from the hustle bustle. The selection of lagers on draught is a bit limited and food a bit pricey, nevertheless it is in a prime location and we found the staff very friendly and helpful. I can't wait to stay there again.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a sea view and possibly one with a balcony in the summer months

I have been to this hotel on two previous occasions & so far have never been disappointed. I have stayed in a variety of rooms. The rooms are always clean & comfortable. Some rooms have a better view than others. My room this time had a view of the sea, the ferry from Sandbanks to Studland & the beach at Studland. As I opened the door the view was a WOW. I was lucky with the weather & able to sit on the balcony for a morning cuppa. The staff are all very pleasant & the food in the restaurant for dinner excellent. There was a lot of choice for breakfast too. Would definitely go there again.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view
