Couldn't be nearer the ocean unless you are sinking. Pan-European staff have superb culinary and service standards. Worth paying for room upgrades. Wine prices are OTT but the location compensates -almost. Overall - we will revisit on similar terms. BB Cardiff/2 nights in Jan

Room Tip: Sea or harbour with balcony - channel/sunsets/fog/ferries all great!!

Sandbanks has the 4th highest land value in the world, after New York, London and Tokyo. So you'd expect the 4 star hotel at the end of Britain 's Palm Beach to be on a par with some of the swankiest hotels around. Well I didn't bump into George Clooney over dinner but I did have a superb time flitting between the outdoor pool and the sauna on a frosty evening.

The Haven is a great place to stay if you like spa facilities and sea views but there's a couple of things that take the shine off what is otherwise one of the top places to stay in Poole. Firstly the dinner isn't brilliant. I only wanted one course and I'm vegetarian. With only one option on the menu I didn't have a lot of choice. I ordered the gnocchi and was disappointed with both the oiliness and the portion size. After my exercise in the pool I was hungry and there wasn't a lot on my plate. Thank god for the mini packs of biscuits in the room!

Secondly the walls between the rooms overlooking the back of the hotel are quite thin. I heard my neighbours talking two nights in a row. If I had wanted company I would have brought a companion!

That said, overall the hotel is brilliant. The staff are very friendly and the rooms are comfortable and have everything you need for a good stay. Look out for online offers and you can boast that you stayed in Britain's Palm Beach!

I brought my mother for a spa day and afternoon tea in a Groupon deal and overall, it was a wonderful day and we both felt very pampered when we had finished.

Spa - the changing rooms were OK. The lockers need fixing as some of them did not have a loop around the key, some had no key etc. The pools were lovely and really wasn't very busy - we had the whole place to ourselves!! It was a Monday in December so this may have been why... Lovely and relaxing although we needed to go to reception to have the bubbles turned on, which was strange. Steam room and sauna were lovely. The outdoor pool was fabulous - incredible views. Beautiful area to swim. There is an outdoor hot tub but we didn't go in that. Bathrobe apparently wasn't included in our Groupon offer (which I found strange) but they hotel staff were lovely and allowed us to have them.

Lunch - we requested that it be served in the spa's lounge area and the staff were really accommodating with this and acquiesced to our request, even though it was not normally done. We had duck terrine which was lovely.

Afternoon tea - the restaurant is gorgeous with fantastic sea views. The afternoon tea was huge - 2 big scones with clotted cream and jam, 4 finger sandwiches (standard fillings) and 3/4 slices of cake. Was nothing very special but tasty all the same and very filling, we had to take a doggy bag with us! It came with champagne as well which was good.

The Haven, Poole

Spent a Saturday night at The Haven in Poole.

The location is very good being right next to the Sandbanks chain ferry that connects Poole to the Isle of Purbeck. The ferry runs very frequently and makes a interesting spectacle when sitting in the warm and welcoming bar. There are no local facilities outside the hotel so it's a car journey into Poole or a taxi which costs around £15 to see the sights of for shopping.

Parking was free at the hotel and convenient which seems to make a change these days.

Our room was comfortable albeit a little small. We paid to have a sea view and balcony, which would have been lovely had the weather not been wet and windy. Bathroom was small and functional with a shower over the bath. The room had a plentiful supply of teas, coffees and other drinks as well as biscuits.

The bar area was very nice, comfortable and a great view of the entrance to the harbour. The drinks were also reasonably priced for a 4* hotel.

We did not eat in the restaurant that evening as we had made special reservations in Poole, but the menu did look very nice. Breakfast was very good, more than ample on the self service buffet, and a lot of extra choice made to order from the menu.

All of the staff were friendly and made us feel welcome.

It was a pleasant stay and well worth the price we paid.

We stayed for 2 nights on a Groupon offer and would gladly return even without the offer. The hotel is in a fantastic location just on the tip of Poole Bay and there are regular trips by ferry to Brownsea Island and Poole itself. Food was fantastic. The staff were lovely. We picked the weekend just after New Year when storms were raging elsewhere along the south coast, but if you main requirement is to chill out, relax in the spa, eat and read a book without going too far then you don't have to look any further. I found the bed rather soft because I have a back problems, but no damage was done and our stay was just what we hoped for. Shame it didn't last longer!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the mouth of Poole Harbour give you a lovely view.

We stayed here for 2 nights on the "Twixmas" DBB package which was good value. The hotel is in a great location and we found all the staff very welcoming. Our room was a bit small but had a good comfy bed. We had a sea facing room and I was told it had been updated recently but think "recently" must be quite some time ago! The bathroom was clean and functional but a shower over the bath is a bit outdated these days. Nice toiletries but definitely not very fluffy towels and no extras like dressing gowns. Bottled water was not replaced after the first day (there is a note to say you can buy more!) and toiletries were not replenished either. The food was good but the dining arrangements are a bit strange with people walking through to the spa/gym. The food was very good, although the choice was limited. All in all, a good hotel in a great location which could be great if the rooms were updated and those little extras like dressing gowns/water and toiletries were provided or replenished. One other strange thing-lovely to have a sea facing room so why are the chairs provided in your room so low I couldn't see over the window sill??!!

Room Tip: Request a refurbished room
