“Not 4 Star hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2012

As this is located at Sandbanks we expected and looked forward to a special hotel for the money we had paid. We were very disappointed. The room was not up to standard due to a very dated 70's appearance, old windows which were extremely draughty especially in the bathroom, the sink taps were loose and difficult to turn on and off and the bedroom really needed decorating. The restaurant staff were not trained to the service expected in a 4star hotel and were very slow. We chose the first bottle of wine off the menu and it was not available, we chose a second and that was not available either. Place mats or/and tablecloths would have made the restaurant look less like a canteen and the food was extremely expensive for what it was. We had the wrong newspaper delivered to our room and on the whole we were very disappointed in our stay. We will not be staying again, the cost is far too much for what we received.

Thought this hotel would be quite special given location and number of starts. Staff were friendly but undertrained, and service whilst friendly was very slow.n downstairs is in need of redecoration, rooms were fine and beds were comfy. Pool was ok, but again the pool are was in need of decoration. Stay here if you can get a good price but don't expect annoying too special.

This must be about the tenth time I have stayed in this hotel. I have have always been very satisfied with the venue, food and general ambience.
The hotel is right on the sea-front and has sea views from both sides of th hotel, as it is on a peninsula. We were looking out to sea with views of Bournemouth and Poole..The beach is sandy, and we were able to watch a variety of water-sports, including wind surfing and jet ski-ing.
On our first morning in the hotel, we walked around Poole Harbour, looking out at Brownsea Island. We only had a couple of days away, but it was very restful and enjoyable.

Room Tip: They are all good, but get booked very fast, so book in plenty of time or you will be unlucky. The...

If you are in two minds about booking here, don't. Go somewhere else. It has some good points, namely an excellent location with sea views front and back, and some pleasant staff. But is generally over-priced, the food is HUGELY over-priced and overall the place has a run down air and average bedrooms. If it wasn't for the location you'd be much better off in a Premier Inn. Dinner was ridiculously expensive for only average quality food. Breakfast was self service in a dining room the size of Texas, and the food was barely warm. The woman in charge of the restaurant at dinner set the scene by asking a couple next to us, in a loud voice, 'well, have you decided 'cos I know you said your tummy was a bit off'. Don't be fooled by their web site. Go somewhere else.

This hotel is in a stunning location, but desperately needs investment and improvement.

The downstairs was quiet nice, clean and modern. The room we stayed in had a sea view and was large, however the accomodation is exceptionally shabby - a travel lodge would have been smarter. There carpets were badly stained and there were broken pains of glass on the balconey... we didn't feel it was safe for our young child. The rest of the hotel was is a state of decline, with peeling paint etc. Dirt linen is left out in the corridors and stairway, causing a unpleasent smell.

The swimming pool smelt of urine (seriously, it did) and the whole gym area was mostly unsupervised. We were trying to have a swim while some teenagers starting tipping towels everywhere and throwing plastic furniture in the pool.

The soft play was a good facility and was reasonably new, although some of the padding was ripped on the entrance which looked like a bit of a health and safety risk.

The food was basically a buffett system... table service was limited to just starters, wine and dessert. The quality of food was good but the menu was limited and uninspiring. The waiting staff were very polite and well trained.

The reception desk was disorganised and completely messed up our bill. All sorted in the end but they simply didn't have a clue.

Much of the front of the hotel was inaccesible due to building work, which we were not warned about when booking.

The entertainment was good but lacked professionalism. Most people walked out at 10.00.

This could be such a good hotel if it was properly managed. I think they have failed to address these issues because, due to the location, they will always get a decent amount of bookings.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a sea (not harbour) view.

Have stayed here several times on business which work books directly. Rooms are a lottery, from ok to shabby. Food is overpriced, under flavoured and portioned for a child.I am not usually personal on reviews however the older maitre de is rude and precocious, afraid he has an overall air of being far better than the guests he is serving. Aperitif orders always arrive part way through meal so always ask for water you will need it. There is no way I would pay to stay here out of my own pocket. Its a shame as nicely located hotel badly run overpriced with definite delusions of grandeur!

booked a deluxe sea view room to help celebrate a birthday having had a good experience at sandbanks in the past. the room allocated was in a noisy area and no alternative deluxe room available . had to make do with a standard room newly decorated in depressingly dull colours. air con not working, balcony dirty and unattractive, service on first day was unbelievably poor (it was a was busy day), with total chaos on the patio over the lunch period as guests attempted to obtain service. the lack of senior staff to take control was obvious. bar service in the evening was poor and the general level of service was unpredictable throughout. the breakfast was poor with few cereals and no fresh fruit despite a specific request for strawberries. for us, the hotel failed to live up to its 4 star rating by a large margin. there were positives however. the junior staff were pleasant and as helpful as possible , our dinners were excellent throughout our stay and the location is stunning. finally, the reply to my considered written complaint to the md was bland and disappointing as it failed to cover the specific difficulties we encountered.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the 'new' build area where it is quieter and with better sea views
